The President of the Republic of Finland, Alexander Stubb, has awarded three distinctions to people associated with Hanken School of Economics.

Students and tech enthusiasts gathered at Hanken from 9–11 October 2025 to take part in the Quantum x AI Hackathon. During the event, organised in collaboration with Ultrahack, participants developed tools that converged artificial intelligence, quantum computing, portfolio optimisation, and cybersecurity to shape the future of finance.

Finance Link is the latest company to join Hanken’s partner programme. “I hope the collaboration will lead to recruitment of young talent and strengthen our visibility within Hanken’s network,” says CEO Robert Malmström.

This year, eight Hanken students participated in the international exam "Prüfung Wirtschaftsdeutsch PWD" which is organised in Finland by the German Finnish Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Hanken and the Goethe-Institute. The PWD diploma is the highest grade that can be obtained in business German.

A new book in Finnish, Vastuullinen vuokranantaja (Eng. The responsible landlord), delves into landlord responsibility from all ESG perspectives: environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and good governance. The book is written by Hanna Silvola, associate professor of accounting at Hanken School of Economics and journalist Kati Valjus.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. The agreement also includes a reservation for the same amount for an additional five years, resulting in a total of €1.5 million. Academics in management and organization studies today have been driven into focusing predominantly on building a CV and developing networks, securing funding and producing articles published in high-ranked journals, all of which supports the university’s competitive position in global rankings. As a result, we see academics who neglect their own life in terms of material, emotional or familial sustenance, and social relations. Instead, they devote all their time to precarious work.

Responsible investment has traditionally mainly focused on environmental issues, but the social responsibility dimension is becoming increasingly important. The war in Ukraine and the pandemic may be a contributing factor, says Emilia Vähämaa, Wärtsilä Associate Professor at the Hanken School of Economics.

Limiting global warming requires reducing substantially the greenhouse gases that our economies emit, particularly the emissions of firms driving economic activity. The European Union committed to reduce emissions down to net zero by 2050 and Finland by 2035. Meeting these commitments requires continued actions of governments and firms, but also of financial actors.

För att begränsa den globala uppvärmningen krävs en avsevärd minskning av de växthusgaser som våra ekonomier släpper ut. EU har förbundit sig vid att minska nettoutsläppen till noll fram till år 2050 och Finland till år 2035. How to speed up the growth in Finland? This was discussed at the traditional seminar Toppsemi, which was held at The Swedish School of Economics Hanken in Helsinki on 26 October. "We cannot only distribute the cake, but it must be made to grow, and this requires structural societal reforms that make Finland attractive to investors”, the event's keynote speaker Björn Wahlroos stated.

The nationwide recommendation for remote work has ended and many workplaces have switched to combining remote work and office work in new ways. Different hybrid models will require more planning by both managers and employees and in some cases also redesigning of the office spaces.

Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. Food security is defined as having sufficient access to food in order to maintain a healthy life. The mainstream approach to ensuring sufficient food and nutrition security is focused on production and consumption. New research shows that food security research and action need to emphasise distribution and retail in addition to agricultural production.

New research shows that a service-providing organisation facilitates the well-being of individuals by supporting, socialising, and empowering them. Technology, service environment and design, and internal practices and arrangements also contribute to the individuals’ well-being.

Research funding is increasingly granted to large, multidisciplinary consortia in which researchers from several universities, but also other societal actors participate. Researchers at Hanken have actively applied for funding for such projects, and in the spring of 2021, a record number of researchers at the university received highly welcomed news from the funders.

After many years in the oil industry, Linda Tallberg changed her career and started researching human-animal relations at work. She is often asked the question: what do animals have to do with business?

Big questions such as decolonization, the relevance of research to the global south, and the future of work, were on the agenda of the fourth Responsible Organising conference, held at Hanken on the 28th of April.

Within the agreement between Hanken School of Economics and the Fulbright Center, three US scholars will visit Hanken during spring 2021. Professors Nezih Altay, Brian Gibson and Leigh Anne Liu will conduct research at Hanken and hold a public seminar on their findings. In 2017, The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre conducted an audit of Hanken’s quality system and awarded it a quality label that is valid for six years. In February, Hanken signed up for the next national evaluation taking place in 2023.

The Government is currently preparing a third cost support packages for companies. Applicants will be informed of how the entrance examinations will be carried out by 16 March. Universities have continued to prepare student admissions for 2021, taking into account the current coronavirus situation. The aim is to organise the spring and summer entrance examinations on campuses or other physical facilities. The tests are supervised and follow strict safety arrangements.

Peter Sarlin has been appointed Professor of Practice at Hanken as of this autumn. Dr. Sarlin specializes in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), with a special interest in applications for financial, economic and societal disciplines.

This autumn, Hanken launches a unique course that teaches business valuation with the help of corporate strategy analysis, growth investing and financial statements. The course combines theory and practical tasks during the startup event Slush.
