Information from the Academic Council's meeting 7.3.2018

Read the summary of the Academic Council meeting 7 March 2018.

In its meeting on 7 March 2018 the Academic Council (AC) approved 20 master’s theses. AC decided that the e-mail with material for the AC meeting can be postponed with one day if Monday is a holiday.

Guidelines for changes in the curriculum

The departments are to make an overview of how the courses are streamlined into 5 and 10 ECTS. The changes in contact hours, course literature, presentations and overall work load are to be presented in Excel.

Study paths

Every subject is to present study paths with recommendations on course choices and at which point students should schedule each course. This information should be available online in connection with the general subject information. The Office of Study Affairs will compile a separate study guide for self-study courses that are open to our degree students regardless of campus.

Group work in class

Based on feedback given by exchange students, there is a clear need to take diversity better into account when dividing students into groups for assignments in class. This in order to further integration and internationalisation at home. AC strongly recommends that when students are divided into groups, diversity is to be considered both in terms of sex but also cultural background.

Addition to the curriculum in the Academic Year 2017-18

Corporate Governance:

A new course, Incentive Compensation & Firm Performance, runs in Helsinki during spring 2018.

Finance:

A new course, Structured Financial Products, runs in Helsinki during spring 2018. The examiner comes from a partner university in Portugal.

The externally funded course Volatility Modeling & Empirical Methods in Asset Pricing, runs again in Vaasa.

Marketing special courses to students

The departments can send information about special courses to info@hanken.fi. External relations can help market the courses to students together with the student union.

Limiting the number of participants in courses

AC wishes that the department councils would discuss how to loosen the requirements to attend a course and limit only a minimum amount of courses. Maria Holmlund-Rytkönen can assist with advice on the matter.

Year of Teaching 2018

Rector has announced 2108 as Year of Teaching. Accordingly, she has approved of additional funding for courses. One application round takes place in March and another during autumn. The funds are intended for developing courses 2018-19 onwards.
