Information from the Academic Council’s meeting 30.8.2017

Summary of the decisions made during the meeting 30.8.2017.

In its meeting on 30 August, the Academic Council (AC) approved 33 master’s theses.
The AC’s previous meeting held in Cloudmeeting, a new webservice, was discussed. There is a need for clearer instructions next time. The quorum was, however, present and the minutes were checked.

Decisions on changing the extent of courses for the academic year 2017-18

AC decided on the extent of two courses: Trends in Tourism (Vaasa) was changed from 4 ECTS to 5 and Nordic Corporate Governance (Helsinki) was changed from 6 ECTS to 8.

Hanken Digital Learning Policy

The Digi-group has proposed a Digital Learning Policy for Hanken and the proposal has been discussed in the Pedagogical Council and ITR. The aim is to reflect the Hanken vision and mission. AC discussed the proposal. The departments will reserve enough time and resources for developing eLearning in the teachers’ working plans. Teaching Lab will serve as a support channel. The document will be confirmed by rector.

Revising the degree programme structure

The extent of the courses and the structure of the degree programme were discussed. The proposal was that all courses in economical science would be either 5 ECTS or 10 ECTS. The Office of Study Affairs pointed out that a decision has to be made in this meeting in order to be able to execute the changes on 1 August 2018.

The need for a change stems from the revised strategy, a new administrative system for studies and the need to enhance the throughput of students. Statistics show that Hanken has challenges especially when it comes to Master’s degree students where only 31% of the students make the desired study pace of 55 ECTS/year. This figure is important in the university funding equation.

Discussion of what might cause the low throughput on Master’s level followed, and what might be done about it. It was also suggested that the courses could be either 8 ECTS or 6 ECTS. After a vote AC decided to switch to 5 and 10 ECTS courses in economical science on Master’s level.

The discussion will continue but the matter will now proceed to the Pedagogical Council.
