Professor of Social Work, School of Humanities and Social Science, University of Newcastle (UON)

Margaret Alston is Professor of Social Work at University of Newcastle, Australia. In 2008 she established the Gender, Leadership and Social Sustainability (GLASS) research unit at Monash University. The unit attracted an extensive number of PhD students. Now, GLASS is a Research Unit located within the School of Humanities and Social Science, in the Faculty of Education and Arts at UON.

Previously she was at Charles Sturt University for 21 years.

In 2010 she was awarded an Order of Australia for her services to social work and to rural women.

Susanna Bairoh

Research Manager, TEK

Susanna is Research Manager at TEK (Academic Engineers & Architects in Finland). She is responsible for leading and managing TEK’s research activities and research team. Susanna has 20+ years of experience in conducting various kinds of quantitative and qualitative research projects. Prior to TEK, she worked for several years in a market research and consulting company focusing on ICT. Susanna holds a Master of Social Science degree from University of Helsinki (1993) and a Doctor of Science (Econ.) degree from Hanken School of Economics (2023).

Susanna is passionate about improving gender equality, diversity and inclusion in technology and technology workplaces. She has conducted studies on the topic at TEK and with co-operation partners such as universities. Susanna recently completed her doctoral studies at Hanken. Her dissertation focussed on understanding and explaining the gender(ed) gap(s) in STEM.

Cecilia Borgman

Cecilia completed her Master’s degree in 2016 at Hanken and began her PhD studies in 2017. She has a special interest in women’s situation in the labor market and topics related to labor economics, gender economics and family economics. She currently studies how having children affects the probability of promotion for women and men.

Niklas Bruun is a professor in commercial law at Hanken with focus on intellectual property law, and serves as director for the IPR University Center.

Ira Chatterjee

Researcher, Hanken School of Economics

Ira Chatterjee is a researcher at the Hanken School of Economics. Her work, situated at the intersection of entrepreneurship and social change, explores how organizations tackle grand challenges and contribute to sustainable development. Ira’s research draws attention to the centrality of context and focuses on the mechanisms and practices that enable positive social change, and how women and societies can thrive through entrepreneurship. Her work has been published in the Journal of Business Venturing and she has co-authored two book chapters. Ira received her MBA from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi, and spent 12 years in industry before making the shift to academia.

Caroline Enberg

Carline Enberg

Caroline Enberg focuses her research on media texts, within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis and Gender Studies. She has published on the online self-representation of women in right-wing movements, and is now writing about newspaper representations of women who kill, in an Irish context.

Meri-Maaria Frig

Meri Frig, M.Sc., is defending her doctoral thesis on CSR and sustainability communication in 2021. She has examined how acclaimed frontrunners frame and present sustainability and corporate responsibility in different types of media. Her research interests include nation branding and public diplomacy and the role of cultural and information intermediaries, such as journalists and their platforms, in promoting sustainability. Her research has been published in journals such as Journal of Business Ethics and Business & Society.

Leila Gharavi

Leila Gharavi

Leila Gharavi is currently studying a research-oriented master's degree in Computational Social Science (CSS) at Linköping University in Sweden, where they bring computer programming, sociology, and statistical inference together, all with the help of big data.

Previously, and with an M.Sc. degree in Digital Communication Systems and Technology from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, she has had 12+ years of experience in research and development in the tech sector, 10 years of which has been with Nokia Research Center in Finland. Ever since 2011, and following a B.A. degree in Sport Management from Haage-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland, Leila has been accumulating experience in diversity and inclusion, with International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG), with various NGO's, and in the start-up scene around the Capital area in Finland. In addition to gender/diversity related issues, Leila is interested in how the knowledge produced out of academic social research reaches out to other parts of society.

His current research focuses on gender, intersectionality, organisations, management, and transnational processes.

Jeff has been involved in many national, Nordic, EU and international research and policy projects, and is co-managing editor, with Nina Lykke, Routledge Advances in Feminist Studies and Intersectionality book series.

Suvi Heikkinen works as an Assistant Professor in the field of management and leadership at the School of Business and Economics, University of Jyväskylä. Heikkinen holds a title of docent in Responsible Business (social responsibility) and leads an international master’s degree program related to Responsible Management and Business of Sport. The program is multidisciplinary and organized together with the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences. Heikkinen is also a board member of the GODESS institute at HANKEN. Her research focuses on management and sustainability related to human resources in various workplace organizations.

Charlotte Holgersson holds a position as Associate Professor in the division of Organisation and Management at the Department of Industrial Economics and Management, KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Her research is located at the intersection of organization and management studies and gender studies. She is interested in the empirical and theoretical exploration of gender ordering in organizations, in particular issues of management, change and sexuality.

Dr. Liisa Husu is Professor of Gender Studies at Örebro University, Sweden, and Co-Director for GEXcel International Collegium for Advanced Transdisciplinary Gender Studies.

Husu received her PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Helsinki in 2001, and was awarded the Gender Studies award Christina of the Year in 2002 by the University of Helsinki Gender Studies, and Gender Equality Prize of the University of Helsinki, the Maikki Friberg Prize, in 2009.

Her research interests focus on gender in scientific organisations, academia and knowledge production; especially on gender dynamics and inequalities in scientific careers, organisations and science policy. Current research focuses on gender equality in research funding organisations.

She has functioned extensively as a gender expert and adviser for diverse research stakeholders in Nordic countries, Europe and internationally, including funding organisations, Ministries and advocacy organisations, and has been actively involved in developing gender approaches in universities and research policy since the early 1980s in many roles and contexts.

Dr. Maj-Britt Höglund is a former journalist turned researcher of media texts. Her research is set within Critical Discourse Analysis, focusing on media texts and their construction of women in contemporary society.

She defended her thesis “Re-Inventing the Cosmo Girl. How a Magazine Neutralizes Competing Discourses” in 2016.

Susanna Kallio, M.Sc., is a PhD candidate in Commercial Law at Hanken. Her field of research is intellectual property law, which she studies from a feminist perspective for her doctoral thesis. She has a strong interest in feminist legal theory and gender studies in general. 

Her research on gender issues in IP law is also part of the Academy of Finland funded research project FAirness, Morality and Equality in international and European Intellectual Property Law (FAME-IP).

Carolyn Kehn

Carolyn Kehn received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in May 2018. At the same time, she commissioned into the US Army’s Medical Service Corps where she serves in the social work designation. As a Fulbright fellow, Carolyn received a Master of Social Sciences from the University of Helsinki. Her thesis utilized a gendered approach to the entry and exit of female officers from the Finnish Defence Forces. Carolyn is also more broadly interested in studying social belonging and the competing roles of the state and organizations in producing this cohesion for all people, but especially marginalized demographics.

Dr. Marke Kivijärvi is an Academy of Finland postdoctoral researcher in the field of management and leadership, based in Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics. She is interested in examining how organizations constitute as sites of power and is particularly keen on studying gender relations in masculine-dominated spaces. She wants to foster equality and inclusion through her research. Her current Academy of Finland funded research project (No)Space for Feminism? Gender and postfeminist sensibilities in male-dominated organizations looks at gender and gender equality in the video game industry.

Sari Lappi

Sari completed her master`s degree in social psychology at the University of Eastern Finland in 2019. Her special interests are well-being at work and burnout. Sari has been working as a project assistant in a research project, Social and Economic Sustainability of Future Working Life (WeAll), funded by the Strategic Research Council, Academy of Finland, and in 2019 she worked for WeAll spinoff, Sustainable working life and coping at work in times of large-scale institutional changes in social and health sectors, funded by the Foundation for Economic Education. In 2020 Sari continued working for WeAll as a project assistant, and she also shared the responsibility of coordination in the GODESS Institute.

Jonna’s  research interests focus on diversity and inclusion, ontologies of difference and equality work. Her empirical work has been carried out in Finland, France and the Silicon Valley. She gained her PhD in 2013 at Hanken School of Economics. Between 2014 and 2016 she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University.

Professor, Sobey School of Business, St Mary's University

Albert J. Mills is a Professor of Management at Saint Mary’s University (Canada) and Professor of Innovation 2.0 at the University of Eastern Finland.

He is Co-editor of Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management; and an Associate Editor of Gender, Work and Organization; Organization; and the International Journal of Work Innovation. He also serves on the editorial boards of several other journals, including Equality, Diversity, Inclusion.

He is the author of over 40 books and edited collections, including:

  • Oxford Handbook of Diversity in Organizations (2016) and
  • Insights and Research on the study of Gender and Intersectionality in International Airline Cultures (Emerald, 2017). 

Albert is currently the co-chair of the International Board of Critical Management Studies.

His research interests are in the areas of gender, historiography, Critical Management Studies, and Critical Sensemaking.

Currently he is a principal investigator and co-investigator in two SSHRC grants to study the problems of discrimination in the airline industry (intersectionality) and to study the dissemination of management knowledge in Canada and the United States.

Dr. Charlotta Niemistö is Project Leader, Alone but connected? Digital (in)equalities in care work and generational relationships among older people living alone, a project under the JPI-umbrella and funded by the Academy of Finland.

Her research interests include questions around work/family reconciliation, work/non-work boundaries, coping at work, gender, age/generations, inequalities, and social and human sustainability.

Pia Polsa

Associate Professor, Marketing and Supply Chain Management, Hanken School of Economics

Currently an Associate Professor of Marketing at the Hanken, Pia Polsa has previously worked for Fudan University, Nankai University and Hult International Business School in Shanghai.

Her current research interests are poverty, service and relationship marketing at non-profit settings like health care in developing countries, international marketing channels, and cross-cultural methodology. Additionally, her research includes grocery retailing and consumer behaviour in China and sustainable poverty alleviating business models in India.

She has published in journals such as Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Macromarketing, Journal of Services Marketing, Supply Chain Management, among others.

Her work has also appeared in practitioner-oriented journals like Talouselämä.

Shabnam Shaikh

Shabnam Shaikh is a PhD student in ‘Leadership and Management.’ Before joining her PhD program in 2018, she completed her Master's degree in ‘Educational Leadership’ at the University of Jyväskylä.

Her research interests mainly fall in the broader area of Collaborative leadership and workforce diversity. In her dissertation research, Shaikh intends to examine the concept of collaborative leadership appropriateness, as well as constraints in diverse workforce organisations. She is using the narrative case-study research approach. For her article-based dissertation, Ms. Shaikh is planning to conduct the narrative interviews from the middle and higher management staff members who are working in the Institutions of Higher Education/Universities located in developing, emerging, and developed countries. Ms. Shaikh has over seven years of working experience as a ‘lecturer’ and she relishes working with those from different cultures and enjoys team efforts.

Hanna Sjögren

PhD student in Social Psychology, Programme of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki 

Hanna Sjögren is a research assistant at the GODESS Institute at Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki.

She is also conducting her PhD studies in the field of social psychology at the University of Helsinki. In her dissertation, she explores how well-being could be enhanced for both seniors and personnel in residential care for older persons through a critical approach.

Hanna has previously worked with research-related tasks at the City of Helsinki and at the University of Helsinki.

Inkeri Tanhua

Inkeri Tanhua is a PhD candidate in Management and Organization at Hanken. In her dissertation, she examines the mechanisms that cause occupational gender segregation, particularly in the context of vocational education. Previously, Tanhua has worked as a gender equality and diversity consultant and conducted several reports about gender equality and diversity. Her earlier educational qualifications include M.S.Sc. with a major in gender studies from Linköping University and M.Sc. (Econ.) from Turku School of Economics. Inkeri’s research interests include gender equality and diversity at work, non-binary gender, gender and technology, intersectionality, and intersection of gender and migration at work.

Anna Wahl holds a Chair, Professor Gender, Organization and Management, at the Department of Industrial Economics and Management, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).

Her research areas are Organization and management theory, with focus on gender and feminist theory. She was a pioneer in the field of gender research on management in Sweden with the doctoral thesis Gender structures in organizations (Könsstrukturer i organisationer) 1992, Stockholm School of Economics.

Kristoffer Wilén

Kristoffer Wilén is mainly working within the fields of political ecology and ‘social ecological economics’.

of his research interests are: the political dimensions of human-environmental relations, the post-political climate & era and neoliberalisation of environmental debates, subjectification and power within consumption and work, and the commodification and economisation of everything in market(ing) society – and as alternatives: degrowth, commons, solidarity economy, and environmental justice.

He is one of the co-authors of the book ‘Talous kasvun jälkeen’ (Gaudeamus, 2016. In English: ‘The post-growth economy/ies’).

Ling Eleanor Zhang

Ling Eleanor Zhang is a tenure-track Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in International Business. She received her PhD from Hanken School of Economics (Helsinki, Finland) in August 2015.

A key focus of Ling’s research is interaction across boundaries, which is manifested in various research settings, such as boundary spanning of multicultural employees, social categorisation and conflict management between expatriates and host country employees, and human resource practices at MNC subsidiaries abroad.
