UNIFI’s sustainability theses have already inspired action at Finnish universities – from integrating sustainability competences into degree programmes to investing in related research. PhD Mrinalini Kochupillai has been appointed professor of sustainability and business law at the Department of Accounting and Commercial Law at Hanken School of Economics. Hanken School of Economics has started a unique collaboration with Gymnasiet Grankulla Samskola. As part of the pilot course Organising for Sustainable Futures, upper secondary school students are contributing content to an online course that will be offered to Swedish-speaking upper secondary schools around Finland.

The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the collaboration among nine European universities. Hanken School of Economics has been involved in the collaboration since May 2022, and now with the renewed funding will become full member of the ENGAGE.EU alliance.

Attempts have been made to increase the number of women in the field of technology for decades. Hanken’s Bachelor degree in Swedish in Vaasa has attracted a record number of applicants this year. In the joint application in spring 2023, a total of 739 applications was submitted to Hanken in Vaasa.

The corona crisis has affected the Finnish economy, but to a lesser extent than originally feared. How does one become an entrepreneur or a business person in general? Experiential learning, which basically means learning by doing (and reflecting on what you did), or simply “getting out of the building” in this context, is perhaps the strongest single paradigm in entrepreneurship education at the moment.

Most of the teaching takes place at a distance also during the autumn, but many students long to the classes. One way of responding to this demand has been to combine teaching in class and online teaching in cases where it has been possible.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan for advancing sustainable development globally. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the role of customers in business. It has become dramatically clear to many that without customers there is no business. Now when everything is upside down it is timely and relevant to reflect on this old but fundamental issue. Not that managers would not know it, in principle.

Hanken School of Economics, FIANT Consulting Oy, 3bility Consulting and The Human Rights Centre (HRC) implement a research project called SIHTI (Status of Human Rights Performance of Finnish Companies). The HUMLOG Institute at Hanken School of Economics is the co-ordinator of the Horizon 2020 research project Health Emergency Response in Interconnected Systems (HERoS) in connection to the present corona virus (COVID-19) outbreak. The project involves 11 partners from six countries and has a total budget of 2,8 MEUR over three years.

Hanken scores really well in the latest exchange student survey among students that visited Hanken during autumn 2019. A total of 96% of the 88 respondents would recommend Hanken as host university for exchange studies, and the feedback on courses, small teaching groups and Hanken's webpage was very positive.
