According to rough estimates, there are hundreds of millions of human workers globally who work with animals on a daily basis. A new research project will help develop better welfare for animals in work settings. The focus is on human-dog working relations in different organisations, including service-, scent detection-, therapy-, pain- and cancer dogs at work.

What’s the hardest part of decision making? Many leaders focus too much on the risk of a bad result, and when we do, we risk being less innovative and creative, stated Mona Riabacke, Ph.D. in Risk and Decision Analysis. Riabacke spoke at the biggest annual alumni event at Hanken School of Economics, Hankendagen, in Helsinki.

Hanken has launched a new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) about how to respond to health emergencies such as COVID-19. On the course, you can learn about COVID-data and models, crisis governance during pandemics, medical supply chains, and how misinformation on social media can be combated.

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The scholarship was presented on 10 March 2023 at the Anders Wall Foundation's scholarship award ceremony in Stockholm. Helenius is one of the founders of Droppe, a marketplace that sells supplies to industrial companies.

A new study conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers. The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national measure of perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish customers who have during the last six months purchased or used the products of the included companies.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. It is due to be launched into space in just over a year, with drawings by children and young people on board on the satellite. The small satellite is the result of cooperation across the Kvarken. It also demonstrates that the conquest of space is not just for space superpowers.

Assistant professor Maria Ehrnström-Fuente's current research project "Worlds in transition" focuses on what "economics" really is from an ecological perspective. This was also the starting point for a panel discussion during the Science Carnival in Vaasa on 19.11.2021.

A course ideated, planned and taught by students is currently taking place for the first time in Hanken’s history. The course Sustainable Venture Creation enables students to develop ventures that work towards the UN’s sustainable development goals.

How to speed up the growth in Finland? This was discussed at the traditional seminar Toppsemi, which was held at The Swedish School of Economics Hanken in Helsinki on 26 October. "We cannot only distribute the cake, but it must be made to grow, and this requires structural societal reforms that make Finland attractive to investors”, the event's keynote speaker Björn Wahlroos stated.

All the universities and universities of applied sciences in Vaasa will contribute to this science celebration of rare proportions, organised jointly with the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland.

Big questions such as decolonization, the relevance of research to the global south, and the future of work, were on the agenda of the fourth Responsible Organising conference, held at Hanken on the 28th of April.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII), developed jointly with the Norwegian School of Economics, offers Finnish consumers the opportunity, for the first time, to evaluate the innovativeness of companies selling services and products. The results of the survey were published on a webinar broadcasted from Hanken the 17 June. The event will be annual.

The Association of MBAs (AMBA) announced on 25 May 2021 that the Hanken School of Economics' Executive MBA programme receives extended accreditation for the next five years. Hanken has been AMBA-accredited since 2008.

The topic “Sustainability In The Banking Industry” was of great interest to researchers, alumni and students on Hanken’s Finance Day this year. The annual event was held online for the second consecutive year on 17th March 2021 and fully booked.

The majority of entrance examinations will be held in May–June. Changes to the manner of administering the examinations are made only if required by regulations issued by the authorities.

Why are universities holding on-location entrance examinations during the pandemic?
After carrying out careful assessment and risk analyses, Finnish universities have concluded that holding entrance examinations which require applicants’ physical presence and also involve careful safety arrangements is the best way to implement a fair student admission procedure that takes into account subject-specific special requirements and treats all applicants equally.

Modern technology makes it possible to stream all classes and other events, as well as allowing for keeping up with real-time financial news. Quantum, made possible by donations, opened in February 2020.

A group of students, who presented a solution to how the indigenous community Wayuu in South America could secure access to safe water for hand washing and hygiene, have won the science competition organised by the HUMLOG Institute at Hanken School of Economics.

This year, Hankendagen was held online for the first time with almost 400 participants in the audience. The event was broadcasted from Vasa where the celebration of Hanken Vasa’s 40th anniversary was highlighted throughout the event.

Most of the teaching takes place at a distance also during the autumn, but many students long to the classes. One way of responding to this demand has been to combine teaching in class and online teaching in cases where it has been possible.

How much scientific, openly published research on the web vanishes? A study on the subject, led by Hanken researcher Mikael Laakso, has been discussed in both Finnish and international media over the past week. Laakso emphasizes that there are economic, technical, as well as social reasons behind the problem of lost research.

The Department of Health and Welfare (THL) has launched the Koronavilkku mobile app, which is designed to help break coronavirus infection chains. University rectors, including Hanken's Rector Karen Spens, recommend that both students and staff start to use the app.

During the last three weeks in an ongoing covid pandemic, millions of people across the US and worldwide have taken to the streets and raised their voices in response to the killing of George Floyd by a policeman. Solidarity protests also took place in Helsinki, Tampere and Turku voicing issues of inequality, discrimination, and unequal justice.

Hanken School of Economics, FIANT Consulting Oy, 3bility Consulting and The Human Rights Centre (HRC) implement a research project called SIHTI (Status of Human Rights Performance of Finnish Companies). The aim of the project is to obtain comprehensive overview of how Finnish companies are fulfilling their human rights responsibilities in relation to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

In order to ensure a more resilient and flexible society in the future it’s important for countries not to isolate themselves, but rather to take global regulatory actions through international agreements and that applies as much to fighting pandemics and climate change, said Topi Miettinen, Professor at Hanken School of Economics, during an online event at Hanken.

This year’s Anders Wall scholarship is awarded to Hanken student Simon Karlsson. The scholarship of 125 000 SEK is one of the biggest ones awarded to a student at Hanken.
