New research shows that African governments’ external borrowing can enhance corporate access to capital, not hinder it. The reason is that external debt enhances market confidence. Hanken student Emma Kärkkäinen has won the Association for Environmental Management’s (Ympäristöjohtamisen yhdistys, YJY) master’s thesis competition with her thesis “Implementing sustainable strategy through green investment projects: a multi-level case study from Finnish process industries”.

Finland has implemented a subsidy scheme to compensate industrial producers for the indirect costs of the emissions trading system. From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. At the same time, the timetable for the entrance exams will be relaxed so that those selected by certificate-based admissions will no longer have to prepare for and take the entrance exams.

A new EU-directive requires that all end-of-life textiles, meaning clothes that can’t be used any more, are being collected separately, sorted and then reused or recycled. The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the collaboration among nine European universities. Companies within the EU need to take greater responsibility to prevent social and environmental problems. This is also the case in developing countries, where the majority of production takes place. For that reason, a number of EU corporate responsibility regulations are being prepared.

What’s the hardest part of decision making? Many leaders focus too much on the risk of a bad result, and when we do, we risk being less innovative and creative, stated Mona Riabacke, Ph.D. in Risk and Decision Analysis. Riabacke spoke at the biggest annual alumni event at Hanken School of Economics, Hankendagen, in Helsinki.

Attempts have been made to increase the number of women in the field of technology for decades. However, the attempts have not been successful: In Finland, only one in five technology professionals is a woman. It is often argued that women lack an innate interest in technology. However, the lack of interest is not the cause but the consequence: the technology industry is structured to be masculine.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national indicator of the perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish consumers. The annual ranking conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. The Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG) is working with the most pressing issues in our world: from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and the enormous challenges presented by climate change. This week the Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. The Alumnus/Alumna has also kept contact with Hanken and shown an interest in the development of Hanken after their graduation. This year, Hanken appointed Heidi Schauman as the Alumna of the Year.

In collaboration with Novia University of Applied Sciences and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Hanken is currently calling for expressions of interest in developing hydrogen infrastructure in the Ostrobothnia region, as part of the H2 Ecosystem Roadmap. In 2017, The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre conducted an audit of Hanken’s quality system and awarded it a quality label that is valid for six years. In February, Hanken signed up for the next national evaluation taking place in 2023.

The corona crisis has affected the Finnish economy, but to a lesser extent than originally feared. During the crisis, business activities have been supported both directly and indirectly, including measures such as the easement of lay-off rules. The Government is currently preparing a third cost support packages for companies. However, the Government should consider shifting the focus from direct support such as cost support to indirect support, such as guarantees by Finnvera.

Last Saturday 36 students from Hanken School of Economics, Stockholm School of Economics and USI Lugano in Switzerland met in Helsinki to tackle world challenges regarding food waste.

Financial modelling is the art of searching for the best quantitative solution to the problem. Since the stock market crash of October 1987, modelling implied volatility increasingly became a non-trivial issue.

Finansiell modellering handlar om att hitta den bästa kvantitativa lösningen till ett problem. Sedan börskraschen i oktober 1987 har forskare och experter försökt modellera implicit volatilitet för optionsvärdering och säkring.

Hanken has expressed an opinion on the draft for a new financing model for higher education institutions, which would apply from 2021. Hanken delivered the opinion to the Ministry of Education and Culture.

This year’s Anders Wall scholarship is awarded to Hanken student William von der Pahlen. The scholarship of 125 000 SEK is the biggest one awarded to a student at Hanken. The award ceremony will take place later today in Stockholm.
