The total annual carbon footprint of 2024 was 14 109 tCO2e market-based and 15 519 tCO2e location based, market based emissions being 15 % higher than base year 2018 and in 2023.

The Board of Hanken School of Economics has appointed Kristina Pentti-von Walzel as new chair of the School's donation committee. Pentti-von Walzel has a Master’s degree from Hanken and is the founder and CEO of Laponie of Scandinavia, a skincare company based in Helsinki.

Hanken alum Yesmith Sánchez started working for the DEI consultancy company Inklusiiv four years ago when diversity, equity, and inclusion issues were not spoken of broadly in Finland. Since then, Sánchez has been very busy helping a lot of organisations build more diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces.

Over the past three years, researchers at the Hanken School of Economics have received over 1.8 MEUR in support from Finnish foundations for different research projects. Suomen Ekonomit has rewarded Faiyaz Khan for useful tips for students writing their master’s thesis. Khan studied management and organisation at Hanken and graduated 2024.

We need to focus more on the older adults in healthcare, and it is crucial to recognise their right to make independent decisions and maintain autonomy in residential care. This is highlighted by a new study that focuses on the oldest age group, with an average age of 92 years.

Einar Nordström thrives on new challenges, whether in his career, studies, or hobbies. When he began his studies at Hanken in 2018, he was drawn to the university’s flexibility in tailoring study programs to individual interests.

Hanken School of Economics has started a unique collaboration with Gymnasiet Grankulla Samskola. As part of the pilot course Organising for Sustainable Futures, upper secondary school students are contributing content to an online course that will be offered to Swedish-speaking upper secondary schools around Finland.

Hanken has signed new student exchange agreements with Esade Ramon Llull University in Barcelona, Spain and University of Aberdeen i Aberdeen, United Kingdom. Johanna Karanko and Nicola Lindertz are Hanken alumni who both became ambassadors. Karanko is currently stationed in Brazil while Lindertz serves in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Among other things, they are working to promote the interests of Finnish companies and they have recognised many business opportunities in South America.

This year’s winners of the Sustainable Finance in the Quantum Era Hackathon arranged at Hanken School of Economics developed a quantum optimisation algorithm focused on the logistics industry. Their findings show improvements in both problem-solving efficiency and time reduction.

In line with the internationalisation ambitions of Hanken, academic and administrative staff are offered the opportunity to apply for an Erasmus+ teacher/staff mobility grant at a Hanken partner university within the European Union.

Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

When Stefan Larsson from Sweden contacted Hanken professor Christian Grönroos 25 years ago to ask if he could take a course from him at Hanken, he probably couldn't have imagined that he would bring the knowledge from Hanken to one of the world's top fashion houses.

Climate change adds to the complexity to the environment in which humanitarian supply chains operate. In the meanwhile, humanitarian supply chains would contribute to the exacerbation of climate change if a greener approach of management is not adopted. Collaboration between scientists, humanitarian practitioners and beneficiaries can help humanitarian supply chains to become more prepared to climatological hazards and more sustainable.

This year the Fazer Award goes to Lisa Theman. The award is worth 15,000 euros and is given to a Hanken student with strong values and who has demonstrated good study performance.

The winning team of Hanken Quantum Hackathon 2023 offers practical solutions for small and medium-sized businesses in Finland grappling with ESG reporting. The students behind Sustainify, came up with a platform that simplifies the reporting process by guiding users through tailored questionnaires.

A new EU-directive requires that all end-of-life textiles, meaning clothes that can’t be used any more, are being collected separately, sorted and then reused or recycled. According to Associate Professor Anna Aminoff textile recycling processes, including separate collection and sorting, are expensive and complicated, and puts a lot of responsibility on the consumers – but things are hopefully slowly getting better.

The space industry is on the rise worldwide, and Hanken School of Economics is aiming to promote Finland's aerospace economy. A new Nordic project intends to increase understanding of the versatile opportunities satellite data offer.

At the international level, states from the Global South (i.e. Africa, Asia and Latin America) agree that responsible business means transferring knowhow, resources and technology from the north to the south, and that companies must not violate state sovereignty. At the national level, these states can steer foreign companies' CSR activities, so that resources are channelled towards public and private actors in positions of power.

Planting trees is a popular and easy way to try to mitigate climate change. But is it really as effective and environmentally friendly as many people think? What political forces are behind it, and what are the societal consequences of planting trees in different countries and cultures?

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Gabrielsson is currently professor in international business with specialisation in marketing and sales at the University of Eastern Finland.

Companies within the EU need to take greater responsibility to prevent social and environmental problems. This is also the case in developing countries, where the majority of production takes place. For that reason, a number of EU corporate responsibility regulations are being prepared.

Dr. Craig Crossley is visiting Hanken during spring 2023 and Spring 2024 as a Fulbright Distinguished Professor.

What’s the hardest part of decision making? Many leaders focus too much on the risk of a bad result, and when we do, we risk being less innovative and creative, stated Mona Riabacke, Ph.D. in Risk and Decision Analysis. Riabacke spoke at the biggest annual alumni event at Hanken School of Economics, Hankendagen, in Helsinki.

Alumnus of the year 2023, Kurt Björklund, encourages students to start a job they are passionate about. He believes the alumni have a collective responsibility for maintaining Hanken’s strengths in the future.

Attempts have been made to increase the number of women in the field of technology for decades. However, the attempts have not been successful: In Finland, only one in five technology professionals is a woman. It is often argued that women lack an innate interest in technology. However, the lack of interest is not the cause but the consequence: the technology industry is structured to be masculine.

Professor Lisa Ellram’s interest in the future of the planet grew early on, leading up to her studying and publishing research on environmental sustainability for over two decades now. As a Fulbright Distinguished Professor at Hanken School of Economics, she has been focusing on the role of supply chain in the circular economy.

In a world where humanitarian crises seem to be an ever-present reality, delivering aid to those in need has become more challenging than ever. As humanitarian organisations increasingly turn to cash and voucher assistance (CVA) as a way to provide aid , it is crucial to consider the logistical implications of this. Failure to do so can result in delays, increased costs, and potentially harmful outcomes for the very people organisations strive to help.

Through the transformed Hanken International Talent initiative, all international degree students can now receive support for integrating into Finnish society and working life. We spoke to two students who have experienced the benefits.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. Something tangible since questions around strategy and leadership are coming up in my work daily.” These comments stem from President and CEO of the Ahola Group, Ida Saavalainen, who currently attends the Hanken Executive MBA programme.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. Many countries in Europe are struggling to achieve higher vaccination coverage in the fight against covid-19. This has raised the question of how more people could be motivated to take the vaccine. A new study, which Hanken School of Economics has been involved in and which was published in the scientific journal Science, shows that a small payment equivalent to 20 euros made more people get vaccinated in Sweden.

Hanken School of Economics launches a new Career Podcast where Hanken’s alumni share their career stories and discuss what choices they have made, but also look back at their studies at Hanken. The first three episodes will be out 12 April 2021.

To freelance alongside paid work is becoming more and more popular. When should one consider delegating the accounting to an agency or consider whether it would be more profitable to establish a company? And what does one have to think of when hiring staff?

Within the agreement between Hanken School of Economics and the Fulbright Center, three US scholars will visit Hanken during spring 2021. Professors Nezih Altay, Brian Gibson and Leigh Anne Liu will conduct research at Hanken and hold a public seminar on their findings. More information about the seminars will be published on Hanken's website during the spring.

In 2017, The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre conducted an audit of Hanken’s quality system and awarded it a quality label that is valid for six years. In February, Hanken signed up for the next national evaluation taking place in 2023.

The majority of entrance examinations will be held in May–June. Changes to the manner of administering the examinations are made only if required by regulations issued by the authorities.

Why are universities holding on-location entrance examinations during the pandemic?
After carrying out careful assessment and risk analyses, Finnish universities have concluded that holding entrance examinations which require applicants’ physical presence and also involve careful safety arrangements is the best way to implement a fair student admission procedure that takes into account subject-specific special requirements and treats all applicants equally.

Christina Dahlblom has been appointed Professor of Practice at Hanken’s Department of Management and Organisation as of 3 November 2020. Björn Wahlroos is one of the lead educators on the open online MOOC course Principles of Wealth Management that started 26.10.2020. Wahlroos has made a remarkable career in the field of banking, and he has served both as a professor and as chairman of the board at Hanken.

The coronavirus pandemic has shown that it is possible to work from home five days a week. However, is that ideal? Continued restrictions and the risk of another wave of coronavirus infections could, in many ways, make the autumn at workplaces bleaker than in the spring.

Most of the teaching takes place at a distance also during the autumn, but many students long to the classes. One way of responding to this demand has been to combine teaching in class and online teaching in cases where it has been possible.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan for advancing sustainable development globally. Hanken has developed a MOOC, an online course open for anyone, about the SDGs and how we can work to achieve them. The course starts on the social learning platform FutureLearn on 31 August. The Department of Health and Welfare (THL) has launched the Koronavilkku mobile app, which is designed to help break coronavirus infection chains. University rectors, including Hanken's Rector Karen Spens, recommend that both students and staff start to use the app.

Hanken’s and Åbo Akademi’s Swedish language test originally planned to be organized on 14 April 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Finnish universities have concluded that, due to the coronavirus situation, organising traditional entrance examinations is not possible without compromising the safety of those involved.
