Hanken student teams up with Posti to launch app-based storage service

A new way to store your things: pack at home, schedule pickup through an app, and have them delivered back whenever you need, whether it’s a few items or everything at once. This innovative service has been created by Hanken student Axel Aarnio and his co-founder Mikael Mauranen, in collaboration with Posti and Hanken Business Lab.

“Whether it’s boxes of winter gear, your skis, or anything else that’s cluttering your space, we collect and store them securely. When the weather changes or you’re heading on a ski trip, you open the app and request the items you need back. And when you’re done, you send them back into storage just as easily”, Axel Aarnio explains.

Aarnio came up with the original idea, which has since developed into the concept Remote Home Storage, together with his best friend Mikael Mauranen, a law student at Helsinki university.

“Mikael and I constantly bounce business ideas off each other. Over time, we have come up with dozens, maybe even hundreds of concepts. But this one stood out. It felt like something that could actually work”, says Aarnio.

As a Hanken student Aarnio was already familiar with Hanken Business Lab, where the idea began to shape.

“The business lab has been my favorite place to work and think. Even before I was formally involved, I loved the energy there. It’s a space that encourages creativity and entrepreneurship, an environment that wants you to succeed.”

By a fortunate coincidence, shortly after Aarnio and Mauranen joined the Playground programme at Hanken Business Lab, Posti joined the Hanken partner programme, focusing on close collaboration with the Business Lab, and looking for innovations related to logistics. The cooperation paved the way for the innovation, and Aarnio and Mauranen are now hired full-time by Posti.

Kaisa Suojoki, head of competence development & learning at Posti, is pleased with the collaboration.

“The cooperation with Hanken Business Lab has given fresh momentum to Posti’s innovation efforts and supported us in building future-oriented business and growth. Thanks to the partnership, Hanken students have also had the opportunity to visit Posti’s headquarters, and our experts have given talks in various courses. It has been an enriching experience for both sides.”

The Remote Home Storage project is currently in its trial phase in the Helsinki metropolitan area, running until mid-March. They’ve already welcomed their first customers, but new clients are still welcome to join.

“The next phase is to see what actually works and what doesn’t. Our goal is to make it a service that everyone in Finland knows about and that can make people’s everyday life a little easier”, says Aarnio.
