Blog: Change is shaking up working life - how to ensure both productivity and well-being?

Hanken Professor Jennie Sumelius is researching how the transition to hybrid work, the mix between remote work and office-based work, is changing the workplace, and what HR can do to facilitate these changes.

In this blog text she dives into the blurred line between remote and on-site work, the challenges of self-management, and the need for organisations to create flexible work arrangements and support the skills to work remotely and use digital tools.

“HR needs to ensure that that employees have the necessary skills to navigate this new working environment: a learning mindset and the ability to cope with change, and most importantly competencies related to self-leadership and self-regulation. Self-management is difficult.”, states Sumelius.

In addition, the shift towards virtual or hybrid work arrangements might change individuals' desire for being part of a work community. According to Sumelius, HR should evaluate whether it is worth focusing on creating some kind of core community for those who still want to be part of it, while at the same time accepting that not everyone wants or needs a work community in the same way.
