Companies in regions where climate change denial is widespread among the people are often the most reluctant to tackle climate issues. These companies impose more costs on society and are more likely to commit federal violations related to environmental issues, according to a study conducted by researchers at Hanken School of Economics and the University of Vaasa.

Finland has implemented a subsidy scheme to compensate industrial producers for the indirect costs of the emissions trading system. Maria Wang shows in her dissertation that the subsidy has not been optimally designed. Its recipients are mostly large companies that do not suffer from the increase in electricity costs caused by emissions trading.

The Board of the Hanken Support Foundation has appointed Mia Bengts as Ombudsman for the Foundation from 1 August 2023. Mia Bengts is a Hanken alumna and has a law degree from the University of Helsinki. The Foundation's current Ombudsman Paul Taimitarha will retire on 1 September 2023.

Companies within the EU need to take greater responsibility to prevent social and environmental problems. This is also the case in developing countries, where the majority of production takes place. For that reason, a number of EU corporate responsibility regulations are being prepared.

What’s the hardest part of decision making? Many leaders focus too much on the risk of a bad result, and when we do, we risk being less innovative and creative, stated Mona Riabacke, Ph.D. in Risk and Decision Analysis. Riabacke spoke at the biggest annual alumni event at Hanken School of Economics, Hankendagen, in Helsinki.

Alumnus of the year 2023, Kurt Björklund, encourages students to start a job they are passionate about. He believes the alumni have a collective responsibility for maintaining Hanken’s strengths in the future.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. The Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG) is working with the most pressing issues in our world: from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and the enormous challenges presented by climate change. This week the Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

At the beginning of the year, a new funding act determining the state's research and development funding in 2024–2030 entered into force. In practice, the implementation of the Act means that the central government budgeted approximately EUR 260 million more for RDI activities each year in 2024-2030.

On 14 March 2023 Hanken School of Economics arranged an inaugural installation ceremony for three new professors, Martin Fougère (Management and organisation), Johanna Gummerus (Marketing), and Jennie Sumelius (Management and organisation).

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The scholarship was presented on 10 March 2023 at the Anders Wall Foundation's scholarship award ceremony in Stockholm. Helenius is one of the founders of Droppe, a marketplace that sells supplies to industrial companies.

How to speed up the growth in Finland? This was discussed at the traditional seminar Toppsemi, which was held at The Swedish School of Economics Hanken in Helsinki on 26 October. "We cannot only distribute the cake, but it must be made to grow, and this requires structural societal reforms that make Finland attractive to investors”, the event's keynote speaker Björn Wahlroos stated.

The nationwide recommendation for remote work has ended and many workplaces have switched to combining remote work and office work in new ways. Different hybrid models will require more planning by both managers and employees and in some cases also redesigning of the office spaces.

Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. Hanken alumnus Kurt Björklund donates one million euros to the ongoing fundraising campaign Count on Hanken. With his donation, Björklund wishes to inspire Hanken's alumni to participate in the campaign and thereby strengthen Hanken's core activities.

In collaboration with Novia University of Applied Sciences and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Hanken is currently calling for expressions of interest in developing hydrogen infrastructure in the Ostrobothnia region, as part of the H2 Ecosystem Roadmap.
