Hanken School of Economics has taken an important step toward sustainability by establishing its Climate Action Plan for 2025–2030, approved on 3 December 2025 by the Rector.

The plan reflects Hanken’s commitment to reducing climate and environmental impacts, striving for nature positivity.

The Climate Action Plan sets ambitious targets:

  • Carbon neutrality by 2030 for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. (Scope 1 refers to direct emissions and Scope 2 emissions from purchased energy.)
  • Halving emissions from the value chain (Scope 3 upstream) by 2030. Hanken's value chain includes emissions from purchasing and procurement, waste, business travel, commuting, and remote working.
  • A dedicated goal and plan for the investment portfolio (Scope 3 downstream) to be introduced in 2026.

Key actions include improving energy efficiency in Hanken’s buildings, reducing waste, promoting responsible procurement and purchases, and encouraging responsible travel and commuting. The plan also emphasises climate change adaptation measures and understanding better the biodiversity impacts of operations for reduced environmental impacts.

"The Climate Action Plan will be an important point for transforming the aspirational words of our climate goals in the strategy into tangible action and reductions. We are now at a point where the data is comprehensive, reliable, and comparable, and we know where action is needed. We will continue to publicly report on Scope 1, 2 and 3, and not exclude the most challenging aspects of activities not in our full control, while the plan has a particular focus on actions where our influence and impact are more tangible and that are easier to turn into unit-level targets and action, such as travel." Says Nikodemus Solitander, Associate Dean of Sustainability at Hanken.

The Climate Action Plan is part of Hanken’s long-term strategy, Hanken 2030 – For an International Finland and a Sustainable World, and marks a significant milestone on the journey toward carbon neutrality and nature positivity.
