From waste reduction to sustainable growth - Hanken awarded over 2 million euros for innovative research projects

Hanken School of Economics has been granted substantial funding for research projects during this year. The research topics include circular economy in the humanitarian sector, promoting knowledge on sustainable growth together with African higher education institutions, the impact of tree planting on people and the environment, socially responsible and economically sustainable people management and corporate entrepreneurship.

“Hanken has recently published its strategy Hanken 2030 - For an International Finland and a Sustainable World, which serves as our pledge to society. The strategy sets external funding through cross disciplinary research projects as a top priority for our work in the coming years. We are happy with the wide range of themes and partners in our externally funded projects for the year 2023 and look forward to strong growth in 2024,” says Charlotta Collén, director for research and international affairs.

Joakim Wincent, professor of entrepreneurship, management and organisation, received 428 102 euros in funding from Erling Perssons Stiftelse for the project “Utveckling av kunskapsdomän inom entreprenörskap i befintliga företag”.

Maria Ehrnström-Fuentes, associate professor of management and organization at Hanken in Vaasa, has received 400 000 euros in funding from the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the project “Trees for Development: The Socio-environmental and politico-economic dynamics of ecological restoration through tree planting schemes in the global South”. Hanken is the leader of the consortium project.

Denise Salin, professor of management and organisation, has been awarded 300 000 euros in funding from the Marcus Wallenberg foundation for the project “Socially responsible and economically sustainable people management: meta-analytic investigation, scale development and validation, and multi-level extension and replication”.

Gyöngyi Kovács, Erkko professor in humanitarian logistics and dean of research, has been awarded 270 363 euros in funding from Horizon Europe for the project “Waste in humanitarian Operations: Reduction and Minimisation (WORM)”. Hanken is the leader of the consortium project. 

Nikodemus Solitander, postdoctoral researcher in supply chain management and social responsibility and associate dean of sustainability, was awarded 191 695 euros in funding from the Erasmus+ Programme for the project “Co-producing Knowledge on Sustainable Development through Service Learning Pedagogy between African and European HEIs (COPAFEU)”. Hanken is the leader of the consortium project.

Kristina Heinonen, professor in marketing, received 188 364 euros in funding from Peter Wallenbergs stiftelse for the project “The Data Paradox: Aligning Digitalization and Data policies for Consumer and Employee Well-Being”. 

Thommie Burström, assistant professor of entrepreneurship, management and organisation, was awarded 150 000 euros in funding from EIT HEI Initiative Innovation Capacity Building for Higher Education for the project “Interdisciplinary Creative Education in Deep Tech - INCREDIT”. 

Tuomas Mylly, project manager at IPR University Center, was awarded 146 165 euros in funding from Business Finland for the project “Standard Edge”. Hanken is the leader of the consortium project.

Othmar Lehner, associate professor in accounting, received 120 000 euros in funding from Nasdaq Nordic Foundation for the project “Integrating TCFD Climate Scenarios with Company Valuation”.
