About the course:
The aim of the course is to give an in-depth overview of the current state and contribution of Responsible Organising research on social inequalities. Responsible Organising (RO) is one of Hanken's four Areas of Strength, which has been evaluated as reaching highest international standard. At the core of Responsible Organising (RO) is research on how different actors are organising for transformative action towards sustainability, as expressed in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Common for RO research is a rejection of the idea that moral concerns and business decisions are something separate. Instead, within RO ethics/morality and business as inseparable, intertwined, and interconnected. Simultaneously it recognizes the complexity, multifacetedness, and intersectionality of societal inequalities. The course brings together faculty from different subjects to explore the intersections between social responsibility and social inequalities.
After completing the course, you will be able to
• evaluate different perspectives on social inequalities
• position your own research in relation to different Responsible Organising perspectives
• understand the evolution of Responsible Organising research and how you can contribute to that evolution
• collaborate with other researchers to develop research ideas into joint paper

6 ECTS credits course
Grading: Pass or fail

Instruction and examination:
Course consists of 1) pre-readings and pre-writings, 2) lectures, 3) individual mentoring sessions, and 4) written assignment (learning diary, around 3,000 words).

About the lecturers:
Maria Ehrnström-Fuentes holds a PhD in Supply Chain Management and Social Responsibility. Her work is currently focused on the politics and organization of sustainable food and alternative food networks. Her research interests also include the organizational practices and governance of corporate-community relations in territories marked by extractive economic operations, including processes of legitimation and contestation, and the impacts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices on community self-organisation. Maria has published in journals such as Geoforum, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Journal of Rural Studies.

Jeff Hearn is Professor Emeritus, Management and Organisation, Hanken, Finland; and Research Director of the GODESS (Gender, Organisation, Diversity, Equality, Social Sustainability in Transnational Times) Institute, based at Hanken. He is: Fellow of Academy of Social Sciences (UK); honorary doctor, Social Sciences, Lund University, Sweden; Professor Extraordinarius (honorary), University of South Africa. He has been involved long-term in research and policy development around gender and diversity in work, organisations, management, policy, ICTs, and transnational processes, with many national, Nordic, European and North-South research projects. He is co-managing editor of Routledge book series on intersectionality (25 books), and co-editor, associate editor or board member of numerous journals. He has supervised 17 completed PhDs at Hanken (total c.45), and examined 75+ PhDs in 10 countries. He has authored or edited over 50 books and journal special issues, and published over 140 articles in refereed international journals, including British Journal of Management; Culture & Organization; Equality, Diversity & Inclusion; Gender, Work & Organization; Human Relations; International Studies of Management and Organization; Journal of Business Ethics; Journal of Marketing Management; Leadership; Organization; Organization Studies.

Charlotta Niemistö is Project Leader at Hanken, research project Social and Economic Sustainability of Future Working Life (WeAll), financed by the Strategic Research Council at the Academy of Finland; and Director of the GODESS Institute (Gender, Organisation, Diversity, Equality and Social Sustainability in Transnational times), an international collaboration between Jyväskylä University Business School, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sobey School of Business at St. Mary’s University and the GLASS Institute at Monash University. She received her PhD. from Hanken, Dept of Management and Organisation in 2012. Her research has addressed work/family reconciliation, boundaries between work and non-work, gender relations, intersectionality, organisational well-being, changes in national family policies and generational differences. She is an associate editor for the journal Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management.

Wojciech Piotrowicz (PhD Brunel, UK, PGDipLATHE Oxon, UK) is Associate Professor in Sustainable Supply Chains and Humanitarian Logistics, at Hanken,  Director of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG Institute), and International Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, Saїd Business School. His research is related to sustainability in supply chain management, technology, performance measurement and evaluation, humanitarian logistics and retail. Wojciech has considerable experience as member of large international research projects within both the public and private sectors, He is recipient Emerald Literati Awards. Wojciech cooperates with industry and NGO sectors.

Nikodemus Solitander acts as the director of Centre for Corporate Responsibility (CCR), a joint research institute between Hanken and University of Helsinki. He also works as postdoctoral researcher and holds a PhD degree in Supply Chain Management and Social Responsibility at Hanken. His research interests include CSR in the supply chain; human rights and business, business ethics, the organization of transnational justice networks, responsible management education and pedagogy for sustainable development. He is also one of the founders of the CR3+ conference. He has published in international journals such as Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, Journal of Business Ethics, Management Decision, and Management Learning.

Janne Tienari is Professor of Management and Organization at Hanken, Finland. His research and teaching interests include gender and diversity, strategy work, managing multinational corporations, mergers and acquisitions, branding and media, and changing academia from a critical perspective. His latest passion is to understand management, new generations, and the future. Tienari’s work has been published in leading organization and management studies journals such as Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Organization Studies, Organization, Human Relations, and Journal of Management Studies.
