QTEM Master Studies

This page contains useful information for students selected for QTEM studies. Please read more about the contents of your QTEM studies and plan your studies at Hanken as well as at your exchange university.

Parts of QTEM

QTEM Masters Studies consists of the following parts:

  1. Courses at Hanken
    • In order to get the QTEM certificate 50% of all of your courses included in your master's degree have to consist of quantitative courses.
  2. An exchange semester
    • During the QTEM exchange a minimum of 22 ECTS of the exchange courses should be quantitative or semi-quantitative courses.
  3. GBAC
    • On top of the masters studies conducted at Hanken and during the exchange semester the QTEM students also take part in the Global Business Analytics Challenge (GBAC). The GBAC is composed of two online trainings as well as the QTEM Data Challenge (QDC). The QDC is a global group challenge in which the QTEM students in teams of three solve real-life company challenges.
  4. Analytical internship
    • All QTEM students also gain professional experience through a corporate or an institutional internship.

Below you can find more information about the different parts of the QTEM masters studies.

    QTEM Modules and quantitative courses

QTEM requires that at least 50% of the credits of the Master's program overall should consist of quantitative courses (including courses at Hanken and your QTEM exchange). The courses at Hanken in Accounting, Economics and Finance are all assigned to a QTEM module and have a quantitative rating. Thus, QTEM students with a major in Accounting, Economics or Finance, that follow the normal study plan of their subject will also meet the quantitative course requirement and module requirement.

QTEM courses are assigned to one or many QTEM modules. A module is a recognition of a topic or functional specialisation. QTEM students fulfil a QTEM module when having completed 20 credits (ECTS) within a certain module.

    QTEM Modules

    • Applied Economics and Public Policy
    • Innovation and Strategy

    • Finance and Risk Management

    • Marketing and Supply Chain

    • Business Intelligence and Big Data

In addition to the QTEM requirements, students need to fulfil Hanken's master degree requirements and receive a master's diploma in order to earn the QTEM Certificate.

Part of the QTEM studies is an exchange semester abroad on master level at one of the QTEM Partner universities. There are some special requirements for the QTEM exchange compared to other exchanges at Hanken. Please find the requirements below.

    QTEM Exchange Requirements

    • Completing an exchange semester in one of QTEM’s partner universities
    • Study full-time during the exchange (30 ECTS or equivalent per semester)
    • At least 22 ECTS of the course choice per exchange should be in "quantitative" or "semi-quantitative" courses. Find information about course offer and quantitative level here.

    QTEM Exchange Destinations

You can find all the QTEM exchange destinations on the official QTEM website under QTEM Academic Partners. When planning your QTEM exchange keep in mind that the semester dates and the duration of semesters at the partner universities are not always the same as at Hanken. An academic calendar of all QTEM Partner Universities can be found here.

In order for you to become acquainted with the course offerings at the partner universities you can use the search function on the QTEM website.

    Allocation of QTEM Exchange Places

QTEM destinations are allocated centrally through two allocation rounds per academic year. Read more about this in the Application section.

All Hanken QTEM students are awarded a scholarship for their exchange studies.

The QTEM Global Business Analytics Challenge (GBAC)

During the QTEM masters studies all QTEM students also take part in the QTEM Global Business Analytics Challenge (GBAC).

    The GBAC consists of:

    • Two online courses
    1. Data science course
    2. Digital leadership course
    • The QTEM data challenge (QDC), which is a global group work project

GBAC editions take place each semester:

    • Fall semester: from beginning of September until mid-December (1.5 months of online trainings + 2 months of QDC)
    • Spring semester: from mid-January until mid-May (2 months of online trainings + 2 months of QDC)

It is recommended to take part in the GBAC during the QTEM exchange semester, but students can choose another GBAC edition if preferred.

    GBAC online courses

The Data science course's goal is that "... students should be able to use and manipulate large databases (preferably with python and/or R) to create new knowledge. It includes acquiring, cleaning, analyzing and communicating data."

The Digital leadership course's goal is that "... students should be prepared to collaborate in global, distant and multicultural teams. Students should also be aware of the challenges and opportunities of collaborating in a digital world."

    QTEM data challenge

QTEM students from different QTEM Partner universities are grouped in teams consisting of three students. Each team is given a real dataset and a case to crack by a real-life company. The task of every team is to come up with a creative solution and recommendations for the company by analysing exclusive data provided by the company. The three top teams are invited to the finals arranged at the annual QTEM event.

    Internship requirements

All QTEM students will gain professional experience through a corporate or an institutional internship.

Students are responsible for finding and organizing an internship position for themselves. The internship has to fulfil the following requirements:

    • Minimum length of internship: Hanken requires 3 months (QTEM requirement: 240 hours)
    • Can be completed during studies at Hanken or after graduation. Preferably the internship should be done during the summer.
    • Can be completed at home or abroad
    • Must be related to a quantitative topic and have a significant analytical content
    • The internship has to be done on masters level, counting from the day the student began the master studies
    • The internship has to be validated by the QTEM professors at Hanken as well as by the QTEaM in Brussels

Please check the QTEM Portal regularly for updates about possible internship opportunities.

When accepted to the QTEM Masters Network, you will register and create a profile on the QTEM Portal. QTEM will send you information by e-mail on how to register. The portal serves both as administration of your QTEM membership as well as it offers students available internship opportunities by the QTEM Partner Corporations.
