Required previous studies

Here you can find the admission requirements concerning your educational background.

Applying to Hanken's master's programme requires a degree that grants access to at least master level studies. Furthermore, both the Main admission round and Rolling admission round have their own, admission-specific requirements regarding your obtained degree.

Please take a look at the criteria below to find out which requirements apply to you.

You are eligible to apply based on

  • a Bachelor's degree (or a Master's degree) from from a recognised university or a university of applied sciences.

Your bachelor's degree must:

  • be equivalent to 180 ECTS credits or more, i.e. it must be a degree of at least three years of full time studies.

  • be obtained at an education institution that is a recognised part of the official national education system of the country. It has to be accredited as a degree-granting higher education institution by the country where it is located or by a relevant international organisation (such as UNESCO).
  • give access to at least Master's level studies in the country where the degree-awarding insitution is located.

If you are applying based on a Master's degree, the degree must give access to PhD studies in the country where the recognised institution is located.

As an applicant you must have completed:

  • at least 30 ECTS in subjects relevant for desired master's programme so that the admitted students are able to start studies at advanced level.

If you e.g. have transferred credits without specified grades (e.g. from an exchange semester) included in your degree transcript, we recommend that you also attach a transcript to the application where the grades are visible in order for the credits to be taken into account in the evaluation.

    Note!

    • Hanken does not evaluate the relevance of the applicant's educational background in advance. The evaluation is only done during the processing of the applications with the application and enclosures at hand.

    • Only courses that have been obtained and are visible on the transcript of records submitted with the application will be considered when evaluating the applicant's educational background.

    • Fulfilling the amount of ECTS credits required for a master's programme does not automatically lead to admission of the applicant. It will be decided case by case whether the applicant possesses the knowledge required for studies at advanced level or not.

    • In case the degree is a double degree/triple degree/transnational degree/joint degree, the university/universities which issued the degree certificate/certificates need to be recognised institutions in the country they are located and the degrees give access to at least Master's level studies in the country where the insitution is located.

    • Hanken reserves the right to decide whether a degree and/or university meet our requirements or not.

You are eligible to apply based on

    • a Bachelor's degree with the major subject Business Administration and/or Economics from a university or a university of applied sciences located outside Finland.

      • if the degree does not clearly state the degree's title/major subject to be Business Administration and/or Economics, then your BSc degree needs to include at least the equivalent of 80 ECTS of studies in Business Administration and/or Economics.*

NOTE! You cannot apply based on a Master's degree in this application round.

It is also not possible to include credits from another degree in the calculation towards the required 80 ECTS, but all needed ECTS must be included in the Bachelor's degree based on which you are applying.

    The Bachelor's degree must:

    • be equivalent to 180 ECTS credits or more, i.e. it must be a degree of at least three years of full time studies

    • be obtained at an education institution that is a recognised part of the official national education system of the country. It has to be accredited as a degree-granting higher education institution by the country where it is located or by a relevant international organisation (such as UNESCO).
    • give access to at least Master's level studies in the country where the degree-awarding instution is located.

    • In case the degree is a double degree/triple degree/transnational degree/joint degree, the university/universities which issued the degree certificate/certificates need to be recognised institutions in the country they are located and the degrees give access to at least Master's level studies in the country where the institution is located.

    • Hanken reserves the right to decide whether a degree and/or higher institution meet our requirements or not.

NOTE! This info does not apply to the rolling admission round.

    • If you apply in the main admission round, at least 30 ECTS of previous studies relevant to the particular master's programme is required, e.g. if you apply to the MSc programme in Finance, you must have at least 30 ECTS in finance. The course curriculum below for each programme for the study year 2022-2023 is indicative and might grant you some insight regarding what kind of studies each programme consists of and what previous knowledge is expected of you.

If you are unsure whether you have completed 30 ECTS relevant studies or not, we recommend applying anyway. Hanken does not evaluate the relevance of the applicant's educational background in advance. The evaluation is only done during the processing of the applications with the application and enclosures at hand.

The completed ECTS do not have to be a part of a completed degree. They can be split up between multiple completed degrees, incomplete degrees or open university studies.

    • You can apply for admission even though you have not graduated at the time you submit your application. Only courses which have been completed and are listed on the transcript of records submitted with the application can be taken into account in the admission process.

    • The admission offer will be conditional for successful applicants until the applicants has delivered officially certified copies of their degree certificate or temporary degree certificate and final transcript.

    • The documents should be delivered as soon as they have obtained them, however no later than the last workday (Monday-Friday) before or on 31 July that same year at 15:00 (GMT +2).
      • If you are offered admission from the queue, your deadline is 15 August 2024 at 15:00 (GMT+2).

    • If Hanken has not received the documents within the set deadline, the admission offer will be withdrawn. This means that if you expect to receive your degree certificate after the last workday before or on 31 July you cannot apply for admission to Hanken with studies starting that same year in August.

    • Applicants who are applying using the GPA of their degree instead of taking a GMAT/GRE test:
      • If you are uncertain whether your final GPA will meet the minimum requirements for the admission round, you should take a GMAT/GRE test before the application period ends.
