The HUMLOG Institute rewards each year one Master’s student and every second year one Doctoral student who have been writing the best theses in Humanitarian Logistics.

The Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Weeks is a two week long conference organised by OCHA, held each year during spring time. HNPW is the largest event of its kind, providing a collaborative space for practitioners and experts from a large variety of humanitarian stakeholders. The HUMLOG Institute participates by hosting several interesting sessions about ongoing projects. This year the HUMLOG Institute is hosting 10 sessions, and guest speaking in a variety of others.

The Nordic School of Service is introduced to Japan. While there was previously a Japanese translation of the book, "Service Management and Marketing," which embodies the Nordic School approach, this current publication delves deeper.

Hanken shows support for Ukraine by offering students who have fled the war an opportunity to continue studying. Totally 30 independent study rights in Vaasa and Helsinki will be granted. If the demand for these study rights exceeds 30, Rector may later decide separately that Hanken grants more. Studies conducted via an independent study right are free of charge. An independent study right cannot not entitle the student to a degree at Hanken.

In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

Hanken was awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” logo by the European Commission in spring 2015. An internal review for renewal assessment was carried out in the view of our strategy in 2021 and submitted in January 2022. Hanken submitted a revised HRS4R Strategy and Action Plan for renewal to the European Commission in May 2023. The external renewal assessment including a site visit was approved in June 2024.

PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. With the recent geopolitical shifts, including the war in Ukraine and both countries joining NATO, the project seeks to understand how these changes impact societal resilience. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. It will also explore how critical infrastructure and supply chains need to be reoriented to support Nordic integration across defence and crisis preparedness. The research is a collaboration between the Swedish Defence University and the Hanken School of Economics, leveraging their expertise in total defence and crisis preparedness.

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

The Fazer Award is given every other year to a Master’s student who has demonstrated good study performance and highlights or works actively on issues related to equality, the environment and sustainable development, transparency or social issues. The Department focuses on the two major subjects of Accounting and Commercial law. These subjects are integrated and linked together in order to offer the student a more holistic view of business, law and commercial practice. The Department's courses afford students the opportunity to study an exciting range of related topics. Research and teaching at the Department are  aimed towards giving students a good theoretical foundation, in addition to the acquisition of practical and relevant skills required in the marketplace.

Critical materials refer to either materials that are not sufficiently available or materials that are dangerous. It is important to secure the reliable and undisturbed availability of metals and other materials necessary for ICT applications, communications and new environmental and energy technologies. In the circular economy of cities, critical materials are needed for instance, in households, buildings, infrastructures, and high technology products. These critical materials must be reclaimed for recycling and reuse towards the end of the product lifecycle.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. This PhD and Masters level intensive course will dive into the operations surrounding humanitarian operations and disaster assistance with instruction from globally recognized leaders in the humanitarian operations research field. The summer school also serves as a forum for operations management students from all over the world to exchange research, concepts, and develop internetional networks.

Application for the fall term of 2026 opens 1.8.2026. Application for the spring term of 2027 opens 1.12.2026. The course offering for 2026-2027 is published before midsummer.

Hanken School of Economics’ Solemn Conferment of Doctoral Degrees will take place in Helsinki in the Assembly Hall Friday 1 November at 2 p.m. Members of the academic staff gather in auditorium Maximum on the second floor by 1.45 p.m. and will enter the Assembly Hall when the other guests have taken their seats.

Received donations are directed to Hanken's core operations and enables special initiatives. The investments support Hanken as a stand-alone business school with strong Nordic roots, that offer high-quality degree programmes in Swedish and English.
