Beyond “Scholastic Accounting”? Towards Meta-Disciplinary pedagogies and knowledges?

Envisioning the school of organising
This workshop is part of RO workshop series. In the fall of 2023 Hanken’s research area of strength Responsible Organising (RO) is organising a series of workshops under the heading “Envisioning the School of Organising”, posing a simple question: “How could we reimagine teaching, research and administration in a way that embody our deepest aspirations for human organising?”

Date: 16.10.2023 10.00-13.00

Location: Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki (partially streamed)

In this workshop, we will together explore two pivotal themes: 1) We will engage with an embedded problem each and all of us share: Who has ‘learned to learn’ that real learning takes place via the “Scholastic Accounting” (so-named by Thorstein Veblen) of numerically-graded, mainly-written examinations. How far do we recognize ourselves as ‘doubly disciplinary’ subjects, i.e. disciplinary experts who engage in self-disciplining conduct? So, the first discussion revolves around the personal “in-here” not the institutional “out-there”.

How might we design and implement meta-disciplinary pedagogies and knowledge to enable the kinds of ‘thinking otherwise’ we hope to encounter in the “school for organising”? How do we reconcile such meta-disciplinarity with the continuing need to acquire relevant disciplinary expertise? This part revolves around the question of how we might manage and nurture the tender shoots of ways of knowing differently that could lead towards different ‘self-and-other-organizing’ within the ‘school for organizing’?

In the workshop professor Keith Hoskins (Birmingham Business School) will present the first of the two themes outlined in the Workshop Abstract, then open-up to an extended discussion in the second part together with the workshop participants.

The workshop is open to all.

Keith Hoskin is currently Professor of Accounting at Birmingham Business School. He was previously Professor of Strategy and Accounting at Warwick Business School, and also at Manchester Management School, at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). He previously held posts in the fields of accounting and the history of education.

His major research and publication interests are in the historical and conceptual study of accounting, management, strategy and modes of valuing.

Keith focuses in the first instance on (i) developing better conceptualisations of accounting as naming-and-counting ‘statement’ across its 10,000 year history, and (ii) its constitutive status as first form of writing and initiator of the ‘non-glottographic’ naming-and-counting statement form (a form of statement with no verbs, and today manifest in such forms as statistics, charts, tables, graphs, equations, frequency distributions, and the multiple forms of money).
