A record number of almost 150 people applied to the 2023 Hanken mentorship programme. Mentor Yrsa Landsdorff and mentee Wilma Leskinen are two of them. The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the collaboration among nine European universities. The Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG) is working with the most pressing issues in our world: from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and the enormous challenges presented by climate change. This week the Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. Responsible investment has traditionally mainly focused on environmental issues, but the social responsibility dimension is becoming increasingly important. The war in Ukraine and the pandemic may be a contributing factor, says Emilia Vähämaa, Wärtsilä Associate Professor at the Hanken School of Economics.

Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. Due to the pandemic, Hanken has transferred almost all teaching to online teaching since March 2020. According to a recent study, the students at Hanken are satisfied with their online learning environment and progress in their studies, but some clearly feel lonely.

In 2017, The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre conducted an audit of Hanken’s quality system and awarded it a quality label that is valid for six years. In February, Hanken signed up for the next national evaluation taking place in 2023.

The number of bankruptcies last year in Finland was lower than during the years leading up to the crisis. Thus, it has previously been predicted that a wave of bankruptcies could strike in the spring of 2021.

Neither the corona pandemic nor distance learning affected the autumn exchange students' experiences of Hanken. According to a recent survey 98% of the respondents would recommend Hanken as host university for exchange studies,

The coronavirus pandemic has shown that it is possible to work from home five days a week. However, is that ideal? Continued restrictions and the risk of another wave of coronavirus infections could, in many ways, make the autumn at workplaces bleaker than in the spring.

Most of the teaching takes place at a distance also during the autumn, but many students long to the classes. One way of responding to this demand has been to combine teaching in class and online teaching in cases where it has been possible.

A study on the subject, led by Hanken researcher Mikael Laakso, has been discussed in both Finnish and international media over the past week. This year’s Anders Wall scholarship is awarded to Hanken student Simon Karlsson. The scholarship of 125 000 SEK is one of the biggest ones awarded to a student at Hanken.

The HUMLOG Institute at Hanken School of Economics is the co-ordinator of the Horizon 2020 research project Health Emergency Response in Interconnected Systems (HERoS) in connection to the present corona virus (COVID-19) outbreak. The project involves 11 partners from six countries and has a total budget of 2,8 MEUR over three years.

Hanken scores really well in the latest exchange student survey among students that visited Hanken during autumn 2019. A total of 96% of the 88 respondents would recommend Hanken as host university for exchange studies, and the feedback on courses, small teaching groups and Hanken's webpage was very positive.
