In autumn 2025, a new master’s programme in sustainability reporting and financial analysis was launched as a collaboration between Hanken in Vaasa and Umeå University. It is Finland’s first one-year master’s level programme at university level.

This year’s Anders Wall Scholarship has been awarded to Maxine Buchert, founder and CEO of Meridian, a marketing agency specialising in organic growth on social media. Hanken alum Yesmith Sánchez started working for the DEI consultancy company Inklusiiv four years ago when diversity, equity, and inclusion issues were not spoken of broadly in Finland. At the end of 2024, a well-being survey was conducted among bachelor and master students at Hanken. The results regarding studies and study pace are excellent, while slightly more students than before experience a feeling of loneliness.

Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. At the same time, the timetable for the entrance exams will be relaxed so that those selected by certificate-based admissions will no longer have to prepare for and take the entrance exams.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. The agreement also includes a reservation for the same amount for an additional five years, resulting in a total of €1.5 million. Hanken will see to it that the donation is matched with €1.5 million.

A record number of almost 150 people applied to the 2023 Hanken mentorship programme. Mentor Yrsa Landsdorff and mentee Wilma Leskinen are two of them. The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the collaboration among nine European universities. According to a survey conducted among exchange students who stayed at Hanken School of Economics in the spring of 2023, 87% of the respondents would recommend Hanken as an exchange university.

The INCREDIT project, where Hanken plays a vital role, has been selected in the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) HEI Initiative. The HEI Initiative helps higher education institutions build the capacity to teach innovation and entrepreneurship.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

Hanken’s Bachelor degree in Swedish in Vaasa has attracted a record number of applicants this year. In the joint application in spring 2023, a total of 739 applications was submitted to Hanken in Vaasa.

Political discussions about whether to merge Hanken in Vaasa with Åbo Akademi University or with the University of Vaasa have been ongoing ever since Hanken in Vaasa was established in 1980. Today Sören Kock, dean and rector’s representative in Vaasa, sees the possibility of Hanken in Vaasa remaining as Hanken in a positive light. “I find it fascinating that a Triple-Crown accredited university manages to operate in two locations,” Kock remarks.

How does one become an entrepreneur or a business person in general? Experiential learning, which basically means learning by doing (and reflecting on what you did), or simply “getting out of the building” in this context, is perhaps the strongest single paradigm in entrepreneurship education at the moment.

The HUMLOG Institute at Hanken School of Economics is the co-ordinator of the Horizon 2020 research project Health Emergency Response in Interconnected Systems (HERoS) in connection to the present corona virus (COVID-19) outbreak. The project involves 11 partners from six countries and has a total budget of 2,8 MEUR over three years.
