In April 2026, a wellbeing survey was conducted among all degree students at Hanken School of Economics. The results show that most Hanken students are doing well and that their studies are progressing according to plan.

Hanken student Nea Backström was rewarded by the Family Business Network Finland for her master’s thesis. The €500 prize is awarded annually to master's or doctoral theses on family business or family ownership.

"Buy this. Read that. Be like this." Associate Professor Mikko Vesa, together with Professor Frank den Hond, has explored so called algorithmic recommendations, specifically how AI-driven tools aim to shape the choices we make and what the consequences of this might be.

Hanken's mentorship programme continues to attract a large number of applications. Over the past year, a record number of pairs, 89 in total, have had regular meetings both in Helsinki and Vaasa. Hanken School of Economics has received 245,000 euros from Business Finland to equip SMEs with tools for successfully marketing sustainable offerings and achieving profitability.

We need to focus more on the older adults in healthcare, and it is crucial to recognise their right to make independent decisions and maintain autonomy in residential care. This is highlighted by a new study that focuses on the oldest age group, with an average age of 92 years.

A new book in Finnish, Vastuullinen vuokranantaja (Eng. The responsible landlord), delves into landlord responsibility from all ESG perspectives: environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and good governance. The book is written by Hanna Silvola, associate professor of accounting at Hanken School of Economics and journalist Kati Valjus.

I den nya finskspråkiga boken Vastuullinen vuokranantaja granskas hyresvärdens ansvar ur alla ESG-perspektiv: miljöansvar, socialt ansvar och god förvaltningssed. Hanken conducted a CO2 calculation development project of its 2023 carbon footprint and recalculated the base year 2018 emissions.

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. At the same time, the timetable for the entrance exams will be relaxed so that those selected by certificate-based admissions will no longer have to prepare for and take the entrance exams.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. The agreement also includes a reservation for the same amount for an additional five years, resulting in a total of €1.5 million. Hanken will see to it that the donation is matched with €1.5 million.

In recent years Hanken School of Economics has welcomed about 80 new international students each autumn. Most international students join Hanken’s Master’s programmes in English, which offer major studies in the main business-school disciplines. For the 2023-2024 academic year, Hanken has international students from 35 countries around the world.

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. This will make it possible to adjust the schedule of admissions so that those selected through certificate-based admission do not need to prepare for the entrance exams.

Hanken School of Economics has been granted substantial funding for research projects during this year. The research topics include circular economy in the humanitarian sector, promoting knowledge on sustainable growth together with African higher education institutions, the impact of tree planting on people and the environment, socially responsible and economically sustainable people management and corporate entrepreneurship.

Svenska handelshögskolan (Hanken) har beviljats betydande finansiering för forskningsprojekt år 2023. Forskningsämnena inkluderar bland annat cirkulär ekonomi inom humanitära sektorn, främjande av kunskap om hållbar tillväxt tillsammans med afrikanska högre läroanstalter, effekterna av trädplantering på människan och naturen, socialt ansvarsfull och ekonomiskt hållbar personaladministration samt intraprenörskap.

During Rector’s mulled wine event in Helsinki on 15 December 2023, and in Vaasa on 18 December 2023, Rector Ingmar Björkman presented awards and distinctions. Björkman also presented the medals awarded by President Sauli Niinistö on Independence Day.

Hanken’s Associate professor and director of the HUMLOG Institute Diego Vega has been rewarded by the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN). ALAN honours disaster relief efforts by those in the humanitarian logistics and supply chain industries.

At the international level, states from the Global South (i.e. Africa, Asia and Latin America) agree that responsible business means transferring knowhow, resources and technology from the north to the south, and that companies must not violate state sovereignty. At the national level, these states can steer foreign companies' CSR activities, so that resources are channelled towards public and private actors in positions of power.

The Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel will visit Hanken in Helsinki on Thursday 21 September 2023 at 11-12:30. The visit requires some special arrangements to ensure the safety during the visit.

Professor Lisa Ellram’s interest in the future of the planet grew early on, leading up to her studying and publishing research on environmental sustainability for over two decades now. On 6 December 2022, President of the Republic of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, awarded three medals to people connected with Hanken School of Economics. The medals are officially awarded on Independence Day, but Hanken will mark the occasion with a ceremony during the Rector's Christmas coffee at the School on 16 December 2022.

Due to the rising availability of online data, firms and consumers can make more informed decisions than ever before. Dr. Daniel Pasternack has on 1.10.2021 been appointed Professor of Practice at Hanken for a period of three years. Pasternack has a background as an entrepreneur and is the CEO of the asset management company Elite Alfred Berg.

Luk is also very generous with his time and contributes actively to strengthen the research community.

Finnish universities’ vice presidents for education agreed on launching a joint development project to develop student admissions. Entrance examinations will be digitalised, their content developed, and their number significantly reduced. The needs for development were identified jointly by the universities particularly as a result of admissions carried out over the course of the national state of emergency. The development work will be discussed at universities during the autumn.

Every autumn, a national questionnaire is sent out to all those who have graduated from a university in Finland following up on their careers. According to the latest results, Hanken is placed at the very top by graduates with a master’s degree in business when evaluating their education programmes.

"We cannot only distribute the cake, but it must be made to grow, and this requires structural societal reforms that make Finland attractive to investors”, the event's keynote speaker Björn Wahlroos stated.

A supply chain perspective can enable the identification of problems in legal processes, factors that affect public procurement and vulnerabilities in preparedness for cascading disasters. When Paul Viio, Professor of Practice at Hanken since 15.3.2021, six year ago started to do online courses in the USA, he felt that the field was light years ahead there compared to Finland. However, during the last year, huge steps towards digitalisation has been taken in Finland – sometimes even bigger than necessary.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII), developed jointly with the Norwegian School of Economics, offers Finnish consumers the opportunity, for the first time, to evaluate the innovativeness of companies selling services and products. The results of the survey were published on a webinar broadcasted from Hanken the 17 June. The event will be annual.

Hanken har utvecklat en forskning i Finland i vilken man listar de företag som finländska konsumenter anser vara de mest innovativa. Bedömningen görs med hjälp av FII-undersökningen (Finskt Innovationsindex) som har utvecklats i samarbete med Norwegian School of Economics. Resultaten av undersökningen offentliggjordes i ett webbinairum som sändes från Hanken den 17 juni. Evenemanget kommer att bli årligt.

Due to the pandemic, Hanken has transferred almost all teaching to online teaching since March 2020. According to a recent study, the students at Hanken are satisfied with their online learning environment and progress in their studies, but some clearly feel lonely.

The majority of entrance examinations will be held in May–June. Changes to the manner of administering the examinations are made only if required by regulations issued by the authorities.

Hanken Professor Christian Grönroos has been ranked as number two among marketing researchers, according to a study by researchers from Stanford university, published in the prestigious scientific journal PLOS Biology.

Political discussions about whether to merge Hanken in Vaasa with Åbo Akademi University or with the University of Vaasa have been ongoing ever since Hanken in Vaasa was established in 1980. Today Sören Kock, dean and rector’s representative in Vaasa, sees the possibility of Hanken in Vaasa remaining as Hanken in a positive light. “I find it fascinating that a Triple-Crown accredited university manages to operate in two locations,” Kock remarks.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan for advancing sustainable development globally.
