Time 2 Scale is a project designed to support startups in Finland and the Baltic countries in expanding their operations. Of the first eight Finnish companies that have taken part, more than half have already succeeded in scaling up their business.

When Patrick Lapveteläinen began his studies in finance and investments at Hanken School of Economics in 1986, Finland was undergoing a period of major transformation. Capital markets were opening up, interest rates were deregulated and the financial sector was being entirely reshaped.

A new study reveals that shareholder support for female board candidates increased after gender quotas were introduced in France — pointing to a broader shift in how investors perceive women's qualifications and leadership potential.

Despite the Nordic region's reputation for strong welfare systems and social equality, migrants face significant barriers that push them toward informal economic activities. The informal sector accounts for 15.8% and 17.1% of Finland and Sweden's GDP respectively, and migrant entrepreneurs play a crucial role in this hidden economy.

The COVID-19 pandemic, the blockage of the Suez Canal in 2021, and the Russia-Ukraine war are examples of events that have disrupted supply chains. Media is increasingly mentioning how such events fragment the global supply chains, and now new research proves them right. 

New research shows that African governments’ external borrowing can enhance corporate access to capital, not hinder it. The reason is that external debt enhances market confidence. Unlike domestic borrowing, external debt brings fresh capital into the economy, enabling firms, especially listed and internationally active ones, to access financing more easily.

For years, being listed on a stock exchange has been seen as a prestigious and beneficial move for companies. Lately, however, there's been a noticeable drop in the number of companies wanting to stay publicly listed. A new study uncovers why some companies are choosing to voluntarily delist.

In 2008 the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) published a mandatory sustainability reporting requirement which obligates selected types of listed companies to disclose sustainability information. However, according to new research this regulation fails to promote sustainable practices and may lead to unintended economic consequences.

This is one of the questions a new research project at Hanken School of Economics aims to answer. The project has been granted 120,000 euros from the Foundation for Economic Education in Finland.

Finland has implemented a subsidy scheme to compensate industrial producers for the indirect costs of the emissions trading system. Maria Wang shows in her dissertation that the subsidy has not been optimally designed. Its recipients are mostly large companies that do not suffer from the increase in electricity costs caused by emissions trading.

A new book in Finnish, Vastuullinen vuokranantaja (Eng. The responsible landlord), delves into landlord responsibility from all ESG perspectives: environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and good governance. The Fulbright Finland Foundation, in collaboration with the Nordic Fulbright Commissions, has launched the application round for the Nordic Youth Grant for the Arctic. This grant offers up to 12 young people aged 18-26 from the Nordic countries a chance to travel to Anchorage, Alaska, in April 2025, to participate in the Arctic Encounter Symposium. Sustainable innovation can be understood through three general dimensions: ecological, social and economic sustainability. In a blog post (in Swedish), researchers reflect on sustainable innovation from the consumer's point of view and discuss how Finnish consumers perceive companies' approach to sustainability.

Johanna Karanko and Nicola Lindertz are Hanken alumni who both became ambassadors. Karanko is currently stationed in Brazil while Lindertz serves in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

The Hanken alumnus Stefan Larsson’s first ever “Dare to Dream” scholarship has been awarded to Hanken students Anna Hägerström and Aileen Ahlskog. The students will have Stefan Larsson, CEO of PVH Corp., as a mentor for one year and get to visit him for a week in New York.

Hanken School of Economics invited donors and representatives from Hanken’s partner companies to the university on Wednesday May 29 as an expression of gratitude and a celebration of successful collaborations.

The former Governor of Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank), Stefan Ingves, sees several global trends affecting the economy that will happen regardless of what we in Finland want and choose. These include climate change, balance changes of financial power with countries growing at different rates, as well as large and growing public debt.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. The agreement also includes a reservation for the same amount for an additional five years, resulting in a total of €1.5 million. Hanken will see to it that the donation is matched with €1.5 million.

In recent years Hanken School of Economics has welcomed about 80 new international students each autumn. Top Finnish design from the 1950s, carefully thought-out lighting, colours and soft flooring for a friendly and cozy atmosphere, and beautiful windows bringing natural light and the city outside into the rooms. The Hanken building in Helsinki was created by a dream team, says Päivi Helander, an Olof Ottelin researcher and one of the guides when Hanken participated in Helsinki Design Week.

At the international level, states from the Global South (i.e. Africa, Asia and Latin America) agree that responsible business means transferring knowhow, resources and technology from the north to the south, and that companies must not violate state sovereignty. At the national level, these states can steer foreign companies' CSR activities, so that resources are channelled towards public and private actors in positions of power.

Planting trees is a popular and easy way to try to mitigate climate change. But is it really as effective and environmentally friendly as many people think? What political forces are behind it, and what are the societal consequences of planting trees in different countries and cultures?

Helsinki Design Week is the largest design and architecture festival in the Nordic countries and takes place 8-17.9.2023. The programme offers over 100 events and for the first time Hanken's main building is also part of the festival.

Climate change is an important driver of humanitarian needs. Yet, humanitarian operations also contribute to environmental pollution and degradation. Hanken School of Economics has received over 270 000 euros in EU-funding for a research project that aims to design guidelines and support actions for circular economy in the humanitarian sector.

Hanken School of Economics receives 192.000 euros in EU-funding to produce knowledge on sustainable growth between African and European higher education institutions.

Hanken doctoral student Joosua Virtanen has been awarded a Fulbright Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship. Virtanen is one of three Finns awarded this prestigious one-year grant and will travel to the University of California, Berkeley this autumn to conduct research related to his doctoral thesis.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Gabrielsson is currently professor in international business with specialisation in marketing and sales at the University of Eastern Finland.

The INCREDIT project, where Hanken plays a vital role, has been selected in the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) HEI Initiative. The HEI Initiative helps higher education institutions build the capacity to teach innovation and entrepreneurship.

Companies within the EU need to take greater responsibility to prevent social and environmental problems. This is also the case in developing countries, where the majority of production takes place. For that reason, a number of EU corporate responsibility regulations are being prepared.

The University Collegium of Hanken approved the financial statements for 2022 at its meeting on 8 May 2023. Hanken's operating result in 2022 was -2.9 million compared to the budgeted –3,0 million.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national indicator of the perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish consumers. The annual ranking conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers.

Through the transformed Hanken International Talent initiative, all international degree students can now receive support for integrating into Finnish society and working life. We spoke to two students who have experienced the benefits.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. At the beginning of the year, a new funding act determining the state's research and development funding in 2024–2030 entered into force. In practice, the implementation of the Act means that the central government budgeted approximately EUR 260 million more for RDI activities each year in 2024-2030.

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The scholarship was presented on 10 March 2023 at the Anders Wall Foundation's scholarship award ceremony in Stockholm. Helenius is one of the founders of Droppe, a marketplace that sells supplies to industrial companies.

Every year, the Student Union chooses the Lecturer of the Year at SHS's annual party and SSHV's annual party. Associate professor Pia Polsa has been voted as Lecturer of the Year in Helsinki and received the award at the SHS annual party on 24 February 2023.

Adopt more systematic recruitment processes, quickly implement the EU directive on gender quotas, and a proactive attitude among women. These are some of the recommendations in a new study on how to increase the proportion of women on boards and management teams of publicly traded companies.

Demand for agricultural commodities in the EU are driving land use change in biodiversity-rich countries in for example Africa and Latin America, leading to major biodiversity losses. Large-scale nation-wide protests in Iran have continued for several weeks. Protests began to spread after a 22-year-old student, an Iranian Kurdish woman named Mahsa Jina Amini, died in police custody on September 16 following her violent arrest by Iranʼs so-called ‘morality’ police.

Responsible investment has traditionally mainly focused on environmental issues, but the social responsibility dimension is becoming increasingly important.
