Hanken strengthens its commitment to sustainable development

This autumn, Hanken has made further commitments in sustainable development. The School has been accepted as a member of the network Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and now co-hosts the Global Business School Network’s (GBSN) conference.

Rector Karen Spens gave one of the opening speeches at GBSN's annual conference, which began on 9.11.2020. The other keynotes went to representatives from Cornell University and MIT from the US, as well as Monash University in Australia.

- GBSN is a leading network of over 70 top business schools working to strengthen management education for the developing world. Hanken contributes by granting two scholarships to students at GBSN member schools from developing countries to our 2-year master’s degree programme, says Karen Spens.

In early October, Hanken was also admitted as a member of the global Sustainable Development Solutions network (SDSN). By joining this network, Hanken wants to support sustainable development by contributing to the global discussion and problem solving around these challenges.

Hanken’s aim is to develop educational initiatives and research on sustainable development. In April 2008, Hanken, as the first Finnish university, was approved as a member of the UN initiative PRME by signing the principles of responsible economic education.

‘’Overall, joining the SDSN complements well with our membership of PRME and will steer Hanken towards conducting research on SDGs and achieving societal impact. We look forward to this opportunity to learn, grow and innovate and make Hanken 2030 a reality’’, says Karen Spens.

SDSN operates under the auspices of the United Nations to link knowledge to action to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. Other Finnish universities that are members of SDSN and SDSN Northern Europe include University of Helsinki, University of Eastern Finland, Tampere University.
