Around 30 alumni gathered at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki in early April for a reunion for those who began their studies in 1965 or earlier. The alumni looked back on their student days with warmth and pride.

As state funding continues to decline, donations are playing an increasingly significant role for Hanken. These contributions help strengthen and preserve what makes the School unique.

This year’s Anders Wall Scholarship has been awarded to Maxine Buchert, founder and CEO of Meridian, a marketing agency specialising in organic growth on social media. The scholarship, worth over 18,000 euros (200,000 SEK), was awarded by Charlotte Wall, chair of the Anders Wall Foundation, at a ceremony in Stockholm 10 March 2026.

Hanken School of Economics has received 2.5 million euros in funding from the Research Council of Finland to support the recruitment of a full professor and the professor’s research team in disaster management and resilience.

The Centre for Languages and Business Communication at Hanken is known for its diverse and high-quality language teaching. The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national indicator of the perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish consumers. The annual ranking conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. Something tangible since questions around strategy and leadership are coming up in my work daily.” These comments stem from President and CEO of the Ahola Group, Ida Saavalainen, who currently attends the Hanken Executive MBA programme.

In order to honour the university's largest donors, Hanken has established awards for the best performing students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, and to the best performing students who go on exchange during their bachelor studies.

“We are still at an early stage in a complex digital world of finance. There are huge opportunities for making finance cheaper, faster and safer”, says Bengt Holmström, Nobel laureate in economics and Hanken Foundation Distinguished Fellow Professor.

At the beginning of the year, a new funding act determining the state's research and development funding in 2024–2030 entered into force. In practice, the implementation of the Act means that the central government budgeted approximately EUR 260 million more for RDI activities each year in 2024-2030.

Demand for agricultural commodities in the EU are driving land use change in biodiversity-rich countries in for example Africa and Latin America, leading to major biodiversity losses. Hanken School of Economics is part of a large EU-project that aims to generate new knowledge and tools on how to make agrifood systems more sustainable.

According to a recent survey, student well-being has increased significantly during the autumn semester as Hanken has been able to reopen for normal activities. Yet there are also students, especially at bachelor level, who feel both lonely and want support with their studies.

Hanken’s master level students now have the opportunity to apply for a two-week summer course "Business and Innovation in China" in Shanghai, organized by the Nordic Centre at Fudan University, one of China's top academic institutions. The course takes place during June 30 – July 14, 2023 and is estimated to equal 5 ECTS.
