Wallenberg Center for Financial Research

In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

The HUMLOG Institute rewards each year one Master’s student and every second year one Doctoral student who have been writing the best theses in Humanitarian Logistics.

Hanken was awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” logo by the European Commission in spring 2015. An internal review for renewal assessment was carried out in the view of our strategy in 2021 and submitted in January 2022. Hanken submitted a revised HRS4R Strategy and Action Plan for renewal to the European Commission in May 2023. The external renewal assessment including a site visit was approved in June 2024.

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. The Department focuses on the two major subjects of Accounting and Commercial law. These subjects are integrated and linked together in order to offer the student a more holistic view of business, law and commercial practice. The winning team will be offered a 5,000 USD prize to be used towards continuing education or training.

The Fazer Award is given every other year to a Master’s student who has demonstrated good study performance and highlights or works actively on issues related to equality, the environment and sustainable development, transparency or social issues. At Hanken School of Economics, the Doctoral Studies Council appoints examiners and examines the licentiate thesis. Each researcher's Degree Supervisor administers matters with the Doctoral Studies Council and guarantees that they are dealt with in compliance with the Government Decree and Hanken's regulations. The DigCBA project contributes to the responsible use of digital cash-based assistance (CBA) in refugee crisis to support policy makers with the selection and use of the most suitable digital technologies (e.g., mobile money, blockchain) for delivering CBA to refugees. The Corona-virus outbreak is continuing to spread. By beginning of February, the number of infected people surpasses 42,000 infections, and the death toll continues to rise. As authorities and responders are struggling to contain the spread, news about mass quarantine camps or shortages of personal protective equipment threaten the health systems globally, fuelled by rumours and mis-information.
The disruptions of (medical) supply chains, the lack of capacity to treat patients and the spread of rumours fuel an atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust, hampering an effective response. While traditional models of disease outbreaks largely focus on infection rates, new methods are needed to integrate behaviour from the bottom up, and integrated in macro-level models to coordinate the response world-wide.

The VOL-PREP project aims to strengthen emergency preparedness in response to crises such as climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and pandemics. The project focuses on improving the logistics capabilities of volunteer groups, which play a critical role in disaster relief efforts, particularly within national frameworks in the Nordic region.

It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 2024 BACC Seminar in Vaasa, Finland. The seminar, organized for the second time, is a collaboration between the business schools in the Botnia region. Every five years Hanken organises a solemn conferment of doctoral degrees. All who obtained a doctoral degree within the past 5 years will receive an invitation to accept their doctoral hat and degree under a traditional ceremony. At the same time honorary doctors are conferred in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements or cultural and societal achievements. Hanken also honours jubilee doctors who got their doctoral degree 50 years ago.

Professor (emeritus), Christian Grönroos, is the initiator and first chair of CERS, Centre for Relationship Marketing and Service Management at Hanken School of Economics, one of the first research centres in the service research area. He is also one of the fathers of the school of service marketing and management that internationally has been labelled the Nordic School of Service Thought and is considered one of the leading scholars pioneering modern service marketing research.

This is an industry collaboration project where the researcher works closely with the partner company, a logistics service provider offering circular economy (CE) services. The research focuses on extending the lifespan and circularity of consumer electronics. The academic focus of the project is to deepen the understanding of supply chains and logistics in this context and to theorize circular business models and ecosystems, utilizing rich data insights gained from industry collaboration. The industry impact and practical learnings are an important part of the project. It aims to provide knowledge that can help Finnish industry drive sustainable growth through the extension of product lifespans, thereby strengthening societal resilience. The results should support Finnish industry in developing the capabilities needed to take advantage of EU regulation and CE business opportunities.
