Study plans 2023-2025

These instructions regard students continuing their studies from the academic year 2022-2023 or earlier into the academic year 2023-2024.

For students at the Open University, module students or other non-degree students, separate instructions can be found here.

The current study plans will change as of 1.8.2023, and the new study plans are valid for the academic years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025. The amount and nature of the changes varies between subjects, but almost all students need to make some changes to their study plan in order to find and register for next year’s teaching, i.e. to be able to continue their studies. To find next year's teaching, you need to either update entire sections of your study plan, or individual courses within the sections to the version 2023-2025. Sections are for example your major and minor subject, language studies or semester abroad.

Consider the following points when planning your studies for next year:

  • From 1.8.2023 onwards, our course codes will be campus neutral, i.e. the -V and -E endings to course codes will disappear. Instead, all courses which previously had different codes for Helsinki and Vaasa will be united under one course code, and where the course is organised is instead visible under the “Completion methods” tab. When you register for the course, you select the campus alongside the completion method. Students in Helsinki select Helsinki or Helsinki & Vaasa, students in Vaasa select Vaasa or Helsinki & Vaasa.
  • Changes vary between different subjects, check what changes are taking place in your major or minor subjects in the tables below.
  • You can either choose to continue following the current (2020-2023) study plan for your major subject, or transfer to the new one (2023-2025).
  • Which version of the study plan you should choose depends on how far you’ve come in your studies, as well as your own preferences. Make sure to familiarise yourself with the upcoming changes before making your decision.

Mandatory Basic Studies in Economic Sciences (BSc students)
  • Helsinki:
    • If you have completed all the basic courses, you do not need to change the version of this section.
    • If you only have a couple basic courses left, you generally do not need to change the version of the section, but you need to change the version of any course you still need to complete after 31.7.2023.
    • If you have not completed the course Informatics 1136-1, you must change the version of the entire section to 2023-2025. Then select the course Introduction to Computer Programming and Data Management 1142, which replaces 1136-1 from autumn 2023 onwards.
    • If you have not completed any basic courses, or only a couple, change the version of the whole section to 2023-2025.
  • Vaasa:
    • If you have completed all the basic courses and will not be changing the version of your major or minor subject sections to 2023-2025, you do not need to change the version of the basic course section either.
    • If you are changing either your major or minor subject to 2023-2025, you also need to change the version of your basic course section to 2023-2025.
      • If you are changing the version of the basic course section to 2023-2025, select the -V code version of every course you have already completed, using the Substitutions tab.
    • If you are not changing the version of the basic course section, but still need to complete one or more of the basic courses, select the substituting version without the -V code using Substitutions, and then update the version of the course to 2023-2025.
    • If you have not completed the course Informatics 1136-1-V, you must change the version of the entire section to 2023-2025. Then select the course Introduction to Computer Programming and Data Management 1142, which replaces 1136-1-V from autumn 2023 onwards.
Major subject, BSc & MSc level
  • If you only have the thesis left to complete, you do not need to change the version of the major subject section, but you do need to change the version of your thesis course (and potentially seminar course) to 2023-2025.
  • If you have not yet completed any courses in your major subject, change the version of the major subject section to 2023-2025. Changing the version of the entire section will update every course within the section to 2023-2025.
  • If you have completed some courses in your major, but are planning on completing one or more of the new courses which will be added in 2023-2025, you need to change the version of the entire major subject to 2023-2025.
    • If a course you have already completed has a course code that ends with -E or -V, you first need to change the version of the major subject section, then select the course you have already completed using the Substitutions tab.
      • Example: You have completed the course Strategic Thinking 22025-E, and the 2023-2025 version of your major subject contains the course Strategic Thinking 22025 (same course, but different code - without the -E at the end). In this case, go to the Substitutions tab and select 22025-E as a substitution for 22025.
    • If a course you've completed is no longer included in the major subject after you've changed the version of the major subject section to 2023-2025 (not even as a substitution), you need to use the free edit mode to place the course in your study plan. Please see instructions for the free edit mode on the page Study plan, under the heading "Deviating content in the study plan".
      • Example: The course Service Marketing and Innovation 23142 has been discontinued. If you have completed it previously, you need to use the free edit mode to place it in your study plan after you've changed the version of your major subject section to 2023-2025.
  • If you are missing a mandatory course which has been discontinued, you need to change the version of the major subject section to 2023-2025. See the examples above for courses you have already completed.
  • If you are not changing the version of the major subject to 2023-2025, you need to change the version of any course you're planning on completing after 31.7.2023 to 2023-2025.
    • If you still need to complete a course which previously had a code ending in -E or -V, you first need to select the new course code using Substitutions, then change the version of the course to 2023-2025.
Minor subject
  • Think about your minor subject in the same way as your major, following the above instructions.
  • In some subjects, the selection of minor subject courses is changing. If you have not yet completed your minor subject, you may need to change the version of the minor subject section to 2023-2025.
  • If you are not changing the version of the minor subject section, you need to change the version of every course you are planning on completing after 31.7.2023 to 2023-2025.
    • If you still need to complete a course which previously had a code ending in -E or -V, you first need to select the new course code using Substitutions, then change the version of the course to 2023-2025.
Semester abroad (BSc students)
  • If you have not completed the semester abroad, change the version of the section to 2023-2025.
  • If you have completed the semester abroad, you do not need to change the version of the section.
Language studies (BSc students)
  • Helsinki:
    • You do not need to change the version of the section to 2023-2025. You only need to change the version of the courses you have not yet completed to 2023-2025.
  • Vaasa:
    • You have two options:
      • Change the version of the section to 2023-2025, then place the courses you have already completed in your study plan using the Substitutions tab, OR
      • Do not change the version of the section, and instead use the Substitutions tab to select the new codes for all the courses you have not yet completed, and then update the courses to 2023-2025.
    • Which option is better for you depends on how many courses you have left to complete in this section.
Language studies (MSc students)
  • You do not need to change the version of the entire section, as the section does not contain any set structures, only individual courses you've placed there.
    • If you have courses in your study plan which you have not yet completed, change the version of the course(s) to 2023-2025.
    • If you place a course into this section after 1.8.2023, the 2023-2025 version of the course will automatically be selected.
Optional studies
  • You do not need to change the version of the entire section, as the section does not contain any set structures, only individual courses you've placed there.
    • If you have courses in your study plan which you have not yet completed, change the version of the course(s) to 2023-2025.
    • If you place a course into this section after 1.8.2023, the 2023-2025 version of the course will automatically be selected.

Change the study module to 2023-2025

If you want to/need to update the whole study module to the version 2023-2025, follow these instructions.

1. In your study plan, click on the code of the study module.

3. A blue banner appears, click on "Use this version".

4. You can then decide whether you want to change the version by creating a new study plan as a copy where the study module is updated to 2023-2025, or change the version directly in the study plan you now have.

Option A “Copy plan and change degree programme/study module”

In this option you have your previous study plan untouched, and have created a copy of the study plan where this study module is updated to the 2023-2025 version. The rest of the contents in the study plan is untouched. If you want to use the copying function it is recommended to do it only once, and then do the rest of the updates without copying to avoid having too many study plans.

NOTE! If you create a copy of your study plan you must remember to set the copy as your primary plan to be able to register for teaching in the future.

Option B “Change degree programme/study module”

In this option you change the study module to the 2023-2025 version directly in the same study plan you now have. The selections you've made in this module will disappear with the change.

5. After updating the version of the study module you can select courses in it. They will then automatically be in the 2023-2025 version.

Add completed courses to a module which is in the 2023-2025 version

If your completed course has the same course code as the course in this version of the study module it will show automatically in the module. If the course is optional in the module you must select it to the study plan from the list to the right.

If your completed course has a -V or -E code, and the module currently contains the same code without the ending, you can select the completed course via the equivalence function.

1. First, select the course to your study plan, then, click on the course code.

2. In the pop-up window, go to the Substitutions tab, and select the course you have completed as an equivalence.

If your completed course was earlier found in the study module, but isn't included in the study plan anymore even via equivalences, you must add it to the study plan via the free edit mode. See instructions for the free edit mode on the Study plan page, under the heading "Deviating content in the study plan".

Module in the 2020-2023 version

If you keep the study module in the 2020-2023 version you must change the courses to the 2023-2025 version for the courses you still want to complete.

Change the course version to 2023-2025 in a study module which is in 2020-2023

1. First select the course to your study plan, then click on the blue course code.

 A course which is not yet completed, code ending in -V or -E

If you have a course in the module which you haven't yet completed, and the course code ends in -V or -E, you must first switch to the campus neutral code without ending to be able to change to the version 2023-2025.

1. First select the course to your study plan, then click on the blue course code.

2. In the pop-up window, go to the “Substitutions” tab, and select the course code without an ending. Close the window.

New for 2023-2024 - select the method of completion before registering for teaching

Since we are transitioning to campus neutral codes, ie. all -V and -E codes will disappear, there is now teaching both in Vaasa and Helsinki on the same course codes.

1. Start by clicking on the course code and go to the Completion method tab.

2. Then click either on Method 1 or Method 2 according to your place of study. If the name of the method of completion is Helsinki&Vaasa the teaching in that method of completion is open for students from both places of study.

3. Then you can continue with the registration as usual by first selecting the teaching and then completing the registration via the study calendar.
