As state funding continues to decline, donations are playing an increasingly significant role for Hanken. These contributions help strengthen and preserve what makes the School unique.

The interest in business studies continues to be strong in Finland. In this spring’s second joint application round, Hanken School of Economics received a total of 3,179 applications (2025: 3,279, 2024: 2,889). The master's programme received a total of 426 applications from 268 applicants (2025: 257), which was the highest number of individual applicants ever.

It is extremely regrettable and entirely against Hanken’s values that adult content has been displayed in the men’s restroom at Cella Nova, which is the Student Association in Vaasa’s premises in the centre of town. PhD Mrinalini Kochupillai has been appointed professor of sustainability and business law at the Department of Accounting and Commercial Law at Hanken School of Economics. New research shows that African governments’ external borrowing can enhance corporate access to capital, not hinder it. The reason is that external debt enhances market confidence. As part of a project course in corporate social responsibility and humanitarian logistics at Hanken School of Economics, students have been working closely with various organisations to address real-world sustainability challenges. One student group focused on Hanken itself, developing a method to measure the university’s broader sustainability impacts, going beyond traditional carbon footprint reporting.

This year, eight Hanken students participated in the international exam "Prüfung Wirtschaftsdeutsch PWD" which is organised in Finland by the German Finnish Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Hanken and the Goethe-Institute. The PWD diploma is the highest grade that can be obtained in business German.

Hanken School of Economics has been awarded over 200,000 EUR by the Peter Wallenberg Foundation for a research project aimed at strengthening emergency preparedness in response to crises such as climate change and geopolitical conflicts.

Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. Students at Hanken have participated in a survey on how students in the Helsinki metropolitan area view housing, well-being and the future in the metropolitan area. A new EU-directive requires that all end-of-life textiles, meaning clothes that can’t be used any more, are being collected separately, sorted and then reused or recycled. According to Associate Professor Anna Aminoff textile recycling processes, including separate collection and sorting, are expensive and complicated, and puts a lot of responsibility on the consumers – but things are hopefully slowly getting better.

Refinitiv (LSEG) Workspace licenses expiration time has been changed to 5 days, to boost the circulation of the licenses. This change was implemented on 16.11.

New research shows that challenges concerning management of the shared ownership among members of owning families are based on the absence of procedural justice in family governance processes. Family members experience disappointment, frustration and feelings of injustice, as everybody does not follow the mutually decided guidelines.

For the first time in 10 years, a Finn brings home an individual men's medal in the World Orienteering Championships. Olli Ojanaho, who studies Management and Organisation at Hanken, won the bronze medal in long-distance orienteering in Switzerland in July 2023.

Hanken doctoral student Joosua Virtanen has been awarded a Fulbright Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship. Virtanen is one of three Finns awarded this prestigious one-year grant and will travel to the University of California, Berkeley this autumn to conduct research related to his doctoral thesis.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Gabrielsson is currently professor in international business with specialisation in marketing and sales at the University of Eastern Finland.

Companies within the EU need to take greater responsibility to prevent social and environmental problems. This is also the case in developing countries, where the majority of production takes place. For that reason, a number of EU corporate responsibility regulations are being prepared.

As part of the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), Hanken & SSE remains the number one Nordic executive education house in the Financial Times rankings.

What’s the hardest part of decision making? Many leaders focus too much on the risk of a bad result, and when we do, we risk being less innovative and creative, stated Mona Riabacke, Ph.D. in Risk and Decision Analysis. Vaasa city library is moving to a new library system. The library system is used for managing all library materials, loans, and customer data. Due to the change, all library locations will be closed between May 22 and June 6, 2023. During this period, the online library catalogue will also be unavailable.

The University Collegium of Hanken approved the financial statements for 2022 at its meeting on 8 May 2023. Hanken's operating result in 2022 was -2.9 million compared to the budgeted –3,0 million.

Professor Lisa Ellram’s interest in the future of the planet grew early on, leading up to her studying and publishing research on environmental sustainability for over two decades now. As a Fulbright Distinguished Professor at Hanken School of Economics, she has been focusing on the role of supply chain in the circular economy.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken School of Economic's Board appointed Gyöngyi Kovács, Mika Gabrielsson and Sören Kock as new deans. In addition to this, the Board has decided to launch a new bachelor's programme in English, in parallel with the traditional bachelor's degree programme in Swedish. The first admission will take place in 2024.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. Something tangible since questions around strategy and leadership are coming up in my work daily.” These comments stem from President and CEO of the Ahola Group, Ida Saavalainen, who currently attends the Hanken Executive MBA programme.

In order to honour the university's largest donors, Hanken has established awards for the best performing students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, and to the best performing students who go on exchange during their bachelor studies.

How has Hanken been faring in its responsible management education and sustainability journey for the past couple of years? The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

Hanken’s Bachelor degree in Swedish in Vaasa has attracted a record number of applicants this year. In the joint application in spring 2023, a total of 739 applications was submitted to Hanken in Vaasa.

Professor Lisa Ellram is visiting Hanken during spring 2023 as a Fulbright Distinguished Professor.

I början av året trädde en ny finansieringslag i kraft som fastställer finansieringen av statens forsknings- och utvecklingsverksamhet för perioden 2024–2030. Verkställandet av lagen innebär i praktiken att staten från och med år 2024 och fram till år 2030 årligen budgeterar cirka 260 miljoner euro mer för FoUI-verksamheten än året innan.

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The scholarship was presented on 10 March 2023 at the Anders Wall Foundation's scholarship award ceremony in Stockholm. Helenius is one of the founders of Droppe, a marketplace that sells supplies to industrial companies.

Every year, the Student Union chooses the Lecturer of the Year at SHS's annual party and SSHV's annual party. Associate professor Pia Polsa has been voted as Lecturer of the Year in Helsinki and received the award at the SHS annual party on 24 February 2023.

Hanken School of Economics has been welcomed as a partner of the European University alliance ENGAGE.EU. The alliance consists of leading European universities in business, economics, and the social sciences, which aims to provide European citizens with the set of skills and competences needed to tackle major societal challenges.

Demand for agricultural commodities in the EU are driving land use change in biodiversity-rich countries in for example Africa and Latin America, leading to major biodiversity losses. Hanken School of Economics is part of a large EU-project that aims to generate new knowledge and tools on how to make agrifood systems more sustainable.

PhD Johanna Gummerus has been appointed as the new Professor of Marketing at Hanken School of Economics. Professor Gummerus has a long and warm relationship with Hanken. She graduated from the university in 2011 and enjoys it so much that she has worked here ever since.

PhD (Econ.) Jennie Sumelius has been appointed Professor of Management and Organisation at Hanken School of Economics. Professor Sumelius has a long background at Hanken, both as a student and as a colleague in various positions.

According to a recent survey, student well-being has increased significantly during the autumn semester as Hanken has been able to reopen for normal activities. Yet there are also students, especially at bachelor level, who feel both lonely and want support with their studies.

Hanken’s master level students now have the opportunity to apply for a two-week summer course "Business and Innovation in China" in Shanghai, organized by the Nordic Centre at Fudan University, one of China's top academic institutions. The course takes place during June 30 – July 14, 2023 and is estimated to equal 5 ECTS.

Academics in management and organization studies today have been driven into focusing predominantly on building a CV and developing networks, securing funding and producing articles published in high-ranked journals, all of which supports the university’s competitive position in global rankings. As a result, we see academics who neglect their own life in terms of material, emotional or familial sustenance, and social relations. Instead, they devote all their time to precarious work.

Forskare inom området för ledarskaps- och organisationsforskning har drivits till att främst fokusera på att bygga upp ett CV och utveckla nätverk, säkra finansiering och producera artiklar som publiceras i högt rankade tidskrifter. Allt för att universitetet ska få en konkurrenskraftig position i globala rankningar. Det leder till att forskare försummar sitt eget liv vad gäller det materiella, känslomässiga eller familjerelaterade, samt sina sociala relationer. I stället ägnar de all sin tid åt osäkert arbete.

In the most recent alumni survey, nearly every respondent stated that they have a positive attitude towards their alma mater, and that they are proud to be associated with Hanken. "This is wonderful news for Hanken and we are very pleased to hear that Hanken’s alumni feel that we care about them," says Camilla Wardi, Head of Corporate Relations and Outreach.

On 3 December, during the Student Association at Svenska handelshögskolan i Vasa's annual party, the Lecturer of the Year was awarded. Associate professor Jesper Haga, who teaches finance, was awarded the title. The choice was based on Haga's broad knowledge of finance and his enthusiasm and positive charisma.

"The new Hanken is characterised by simplicity" was the headline on the front page of Hufvudstadsbladet (HBL) exactly 70 years ago, on 5 December 1952. HBL had then visited Arkadiankatu 22 in Helsinki, where furniture was being moved into the brand new Hanken building. The Academic Council at Hanken has recently approved some structural changes to the master’s programme in English. Starting from the autumn 2023 Hanken offers nine master’s programmes (MSc Economics and Business Administration) in English.

Due to the rising availability of online data, firms and consumers can make more informed decisions than ever before. In particular, firms can leverage marketing analytics to learn about consumer behaviours and preferences by analysing data taken from various online sources (e.g., social media and e-commerce websites). Meanwhile, consumers can rely on online information shared by different stakeholders (e.g., fellow consumers and firms).

The fundraising campaign Count on Hanken ended almost six months ago and the result of the state co-financing has now been published. Hanken School of Economics (Hanken) is the fourth largest recipient in Finland with an amount of 6 273 000 euros. Hanken will thus increase its basic capital by 12,8 million euros.

Responsible investment has traditionally mainly focused on environmental issues, but the social responsibility dimension is becoming increasingly important. The war in Ukraine and the pandemic may be a contributing factor, says Emilia Vähämaa, Wärtsilä Associate Professor at the Hanken School of Economics.

Limiting global warming requires reducing substantially the greenhouse gases that our economies emit, particularly the emissions of firms driving economic activity. The European Union committed to reduce emissions down to net zero by 2050 and Finland by 2035. The results from the joint entrance exam in economic sciences, held in June, have now been published for Hanken’s Bachelor degree programme in Helsinki and Vaasa.
