Vaasa represents the centre of the entrepreneurial atmosphere and the energy cluster of the region and home to e.g. the UNESCO Natural world heritage site Kvarken Archipelago. Located by the coast, Vaasa as a city combines beautiful nature with urban city life and is known as 'the sunny city' of Finland. The income level in Vaasa is almost as high as in the capital region but cost of living is much lower, which means there is plenty of money left to spend on living and you can live very comfortable either in an apartment in the city centre or in deatached houses a bit outside of the city. Vaasa is a true student city, making it a lively, international and vibrant place to live in.

In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

Hanken was awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” logo by the European Commission in spring 2015. An internal review for renewal assessment was carried out in the view of our strategy in 2021 and submitted in January 2022. Hanken submitted a revised HRS4R Strategy and Action Plan for renewal to the European Commission in May 2023. The external renewal assessment including a site visit was approved in June 2024.

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. This PhD and Masters level intensive course will dive into the operations surrounding humanitarian operations and disaster assistance with instruction from globally recognized leaders in the humanitarian operations research field. PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. With the recent geopolitical shifts, including the war in Ukraine and both countries joining NATO, the project seeks to understand how these changes impact societal resilience. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. It will also explore how critical infrastructure and supply chains need to be reoriented to support Nordic integration across defence and crisis preparedness. The research is a collaboration between the Swedish Defence University and the Hanken School of Economics, leveraging their expertise in total defence and crisis preparedness.

This is an industry collaboration project where the researcher works closely with the partner company, a logistics service provider offering circular economy (CE) services. The research focuses on extending the lifespan and circularity of consumer electronics. The academic focus of the project is to deepen the understanding of supply chains and logistics in this context and to theorize circular business models and ecosystems, utilizing rich data insights gained from industry collaboration. The industry impact and practical learnings are an important part of the project. It aims to provide knowledge that can help Finnish industry drive sustainable growth through the extension of product lifespans, thereby strengthening societal resilience. The results should support Finnish industry in developing the capabilities needed to take advantage of EU regulation and CE business opportunities.

A record number of almost 150 people applied to the 2023 Hanken mentorship programme. Mentor Yrsa Landsdorff and mentee Wilma Leskinen are two of them. The mentorship programme has given Landsdorff valuable insights about the younger generation, and Leskinen has successfully achieved the goal she set herself at the start of the year.

Hanken School of Economics’ Solemn Conferment of Doctoral Degrees will take place in Helsinki in the Assembly Hall Friday 1 November at 2 p.m. Members of the academic staff gather in auditorium Maximum on the second floor by 1.45 p.m. and will enter the Assembly Hall when the other guests have taken their seats.

The project on analyzing and mitigating Cargo Theft Risk has the aim to explore and compare actual and perceived cargo theft risks in order to outline managerial strategies that can reduce the risk of cargo theft.

The Corona-virus outbreak is continuing to spread. By beginning of February, the number of infected people surpasses 42,000 infections, and the death toll continues to rise. As authorities and responders are struggling to contain the spread, news about mass quarantine camps or shortages of personal protective equipment threaten the health systems globally, fuelled by rumours and mis-information.

Professor (emeritus), Christian Grönroos, is the initiator and first chair of CERS, Centre for Relationship Marketing and Service Management at Hanken School of Economics, one of the first research centres in the service research area. He is also one of the fathers of the school of service marketing and management that internationally has been labelled the Nordic School of Service Thought and is considered one of the leading scholars pioneering modern service marketing research.

The DigCBA project contributes to the responsible use of digital cash-based assistance (CBA) in refugee crisis to support policy makers with the selection and use of the most suitable digital technologies (e.g., mobile money, blockchain) for delivering CBA to refugees. The project consists of an interdisciplinary team of humanitarian operations researchers with the focus on ICT, supply chain management, information systems and organizations studies.

Every five years Hanken organises a solemn conferment of doctoral degrees. All who obtained a doctoral degree within the past 5 years will receive an invitation to accept their doctoral hat and degree under a traditional ceremony. This project examines how hunting clubs and parties function as sellers of game meat, identifying obstacles to meat sales and exploring how game meat is priced. Another aim is to investigate the key drivers of sales and how clubs and groups wish to develop their activities.
