Many older adults now feel they face another hurdle in living an independent life”, Hanken’s Professor Emeritus Jeff Hearn writes in The Conversation.

New statistics on the employment situation in Finland one year after graduation show that alumni who graduated from Hanken in 2024 are doing well. Despite a challenging economic situation in Finland, Hanken graduates continue to find their place in the labour market.

In autumn 2025, a new master’s programme in sustainability reporting and financial analysis was launched as a collaboration between Hanken in Vaasa and Umeå University. It is Finland’s first one-year master’s level programme at university level.

Early on Friday morning, 15 May, the Finnish authorities issued a warning message stating that a drone might be moving in the Uusimaa region, and people were advised to stay indoors. The danger was called off after seven o’clock in the morning.

As part of a project course in corporate social responsibility and humanitarian logistics at Hanken School of Economics, students have been working closely with various organisations to address real-world sustainability challenges. One student group focused on Hanken itself, developing a method to measure the university’s broader sustainability impacts, going beyond traditional carbon footprint reporting.

During the Student Union's Annual Ball on 24 February 2025, Anna Wallin, who teaches oral business communication in Finnish, was awarded the title Lecturer of the Year.

Many Finnish small and medium-sized (SMEs) companies are developing innovative and high-quality sustainable products and services. However, selling those products can be challenging. Hanken School of Economics has received 245,000 euros from Business Finland to equip SMEs with tools for successfully marketing sustainable offerings and achieving profitability.

We need to focus more on the older adults in healthcare, and it is crucial to recognise their right to make independent decisions and maintain autonomy in residential care. This is highlighted by a new study that focuses on the oldest age group, with an average age of 92 years.

A new book in Finnish, Vastuullinen vuokranantaja (Eng. The responsible landlord), delves into landlord responsibility from all ESG perspectives: environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and good governance. The book is written by Hanna Silvola, associate professor of accounting at Hanken School of Economics and journalist Kati Valjus.

The higher education institutions in Vaasa are joining forces to develop entrepreneurial activities for higher education students and to increase interest in entrepreneurship. The opening of the joint StartUp space was celebrated on Thursday, 3 October.

Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

Hanken conducted a CO2 calculation development project of its 2023 carbon footprint and recalculated the base year 2018 emissions.

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. At the same time, the timetable for the entrance exams will be relaxed so that those selected by certificate-based admissions will no longer have to prepare for and take the entrance exams.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. The agreement also includes a reservation for the same amount for an additional five years, resulting in a total of €1.5 million. Hanken will see to it that the donation is matched with €1.5 million.

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. This will make it possible to adjust the schedule of admissions so that those selected through certificate-based admission do not need to prepare for the entrance exams.

Hanken School of Economics’ new Bachelor in Business programme has attracted 1376 applicants in the first joint application. In addition, Hanken's master's programme in English breaks the all-time record with 1833 applicants.

Hanken School of Economics has been granted substantial funding for research projects during this year. New research reveals that specific elements of board composition can influence financial reporting quality, social and environmental performance, and the overall success of a firm.

Hanken has signed new student exchange agreements on BSc level with ESSEC Business School in France and University of Calgary Haskayne School of Business in Canada. At the international level, states from the Global South (i.e. Africa, Asia and Latin America) agree that responsible business means transferring knowhow, resources and technology from the north to the south, and that companies must not violate state sovereignty. At the national level, these states can steer foreign companies' CSR activities, so that resources are channelled towards public and private actors in positions of power.

The Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel will visit Hanken in Helsinki on Thursday 21 September 2023 at 11-12:30. The visit requires some special arrangements to ensure the safety during the visit.

Markus Wartiovaara (Dr. Econ.) has been appointed a three-year tenure as Professor of Practice at Hanken School of Economics. Wartiovaara, who has a background as an internet and family entrepreneur, is the director of the business incubator Hanken Business Lab.

A record number of almost 150 people applied to the 2023 Hanken mentorship programme. Mentor Yrsa Landsdorff and mentee Wilma Leskinen are two of them. The mentorship programme has given Landsdorff valuable insights about the younger generation, and Leskinen has successfully achieved the goal she set herself at the start of the year.

Hanken's staff is warmly welcomed to the Opening of the Academic Year, which will be held in Helsinki on 4 September 2023 at 14 and in Vaasa on 5 September 2023 at 13. The dinner in Helsinki is arranged 7 September and in Vaasa the dinner is held on 5 September.

The Hanken Moodle will be upgraded to version 4.1 the 8-9 August. During the update, Moodle is closed.

For the first time in 10 years, a Finn brings home an individual men's medal in the World Orienteering Championships. Olli Ojanaho, who studies Management and Organisation at Hanken, won the bronze medal in long-distance orienteering in Switzerland in July 2023.

Hanken doctoral student Joosua Virtanen has been awarded a Fulbright Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship. Virtanen is one of three Finns awarded this prestigious one-year grant and will travel to the University of California, Berkeley this autumn to conduct research related to his doctoral thesis.

The Board of the Hanken Support Foundation has appointed Mia Bengts as Ombudsman for the Foundation from 1 August 2023. Mia Bengts is a Hanken alumna and has a law degree from the University of Helsinki. The Foundation's current Ombudsman Paul Taimitarha will retire on 1 September 2023.

Assistant Professor of Marketing, Mekhail Mustak, has co-written a research paper exploring the threats and opportunities of deepfake technology.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The scholarship was presented on 10 March 2023 at the Anders Wall Foundation's scholarship award ceremony in Stockholm. Helenius is one of the founders of Droppe, a marketplace that sells supplies to industrial companies.

PhD Johanna Gummerus has been appointed as the new Professor of Marketing at Hanken School of Economics. Professor Gummerus has a long and warm relationship with Hanken. She graduated from the university in 2011 and enjoys it so much that she has worked here ever since.

According to a recent survey, student well-being has increased significantly during the autumn semester as Hanken has been able to reopen for normal activities. Yet there are also students, especially at bachelor level, who feel both lonely and want support with their studies.

Currently, several regulators including the EU are adopting new corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure laws. Due to the rising availability of online data, firms and consumers can make more informed decisions than ever before. The new rector of the Hanken School of Economics, Ingmar Björkman, wants to engage the community in decision-making processes. He wishes to see more international students at Hanken, and has nothing against people complaining. Engagement and openness (to the outside and internal transparency) are his guiding principles.

Hanken's staff is warmly welcomed to the Opening of the Academic Year, which will be held in Helsinki on 1 September 2022 at 13 and in Vaasa on 2 September 2022 at 13. Instead of the announced kick-off in Helsinki on 19 August 2022, a dinner will be held in the evening after the academic ceremony. In Vaasa the dinner will be held on 13 September 2022.

PhD Martin Fougère has been appointed professor in management and politics at Hanken School of Economics.

Today’s working life is undergoing changes, and we have a demographic structure that requires us to feel up to, and want to, work for a longer time. At the same time, we need more people in the labour market. How could employers, employees and leaders work together to obtain a socially viable working life? That was the theme of the alumni event “Alumnträffen 2022”.
