A new joint programme, Global Sustainability Management (GSM), has been launched to address the growing demand for broad sustainability expertise. The aim is to train future sustainability generalists.

The professors of practice at Hanken form an important link between working life and academia. Among them are Juhana Vartiainen and Shadia Rask, who use their different areas of expertise to help students gain a deeper understanding of today’s labour market and societal challenges.

On 26 February 2026, four new professors at Hanken School of Economics held their inaugural lectures: Mika Gabrielsson (marketing), Olli-Pekka Kauppila (management and organisation), Mrinalini Kochupillai (commercial law), and Othmar Lehner (accounting).

Hanken’s Student Union, SHS, announced the Lecturer of the Year during its annual celebration in Helsinki on 24 February 2026. This year, the title was awarded to Associate Professor Dennis Sundvik, who teaches accounting. In Vaasa, Professor Peter Björk received the title Teacher of the Year, awarded by the student association SSHV.

Together with the University of Helsinki and Aalto University, Hanken has established a Climate Change Teaching Collaboration Network (Climate Change network) for Helsinki-based bachelor and master students. The network brings a selection of climate and sustainability related courses from University of Helsinki and Aalto available for Hanken students – and vice versa.

PhD Mrinalini Kochupillai has been appointed professor of sustainability and business law at the Department of Accounting and Commercial Law at Hanken School of Economics. Kochupillai has won the European Research Council’s (ERC) starting grant for her research on incentivising in situ agrobiodiversity conservation using features of blockchain technology.

The Fulbright Finland Foundation i samarbete med the Nordic Fulbright Commissions har öppnat möjligheten för ungdomar i de nordiska länderna i åldern 18-26 år att ansöka om stipendium för deltagande i Arctic Encounter symposium i Alaska i april 2025. Totalt 12 stipendier beviljas. Deltagande i symposiet ger möjlighet att träffa ledande experter, nätverka med andra likasinnade ungdomar och att utforska lösningar till en hållbar framtid i Arktis. Stipendiet ger ungdomar en enastående möjlighet att lära sig om arktiska frågor och om hållbarhet.

The Fulbright Finland Foundation, in collaboration with the Nordic Fulbright Commissions, has launched the application round for the Nordic Youth Grant for the Arctic. This grant offers up to 12 young people aged 18-26 from the Nordic countries a chance to travel to Anchorage, Alaska, in April 2025, to participate in the Arctic Encounter Symposium. Participating in this event allows students to connect with leading experts, network with like-minded peers, and explore innovative solutions for a sustainable future in the Arctic. Professor Gang Wang from Florida State University is visiting Hanken during autumn 2024 as Fulbright-Hanken Distinguished Chair.

Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

The former Governor of Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank), Stefan Ingves, sees several global trends affecting the economy that will happen regardless of what we in Finland want and choose. These include climate change, balance changes of financial power with countries growing at different rates, as well as large and growing public debt.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. The agreement also includes a reservation for the same amount for an additional five years, resulting in a total of €1.5 million. Hanken will see to it that the donation is matched with €1.5 million.

The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the collaboration among nine European universities. Hanken doctoral student Joosua Virtanen has been awarded a Fulbright Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship. Virtanen is one of three Finns awarded this prestigious one-year grant and will travel to the University of California, Berkeley this autumn to conduct research related to his doctoral thesis.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Gabrielsson is currently professor in international business with specialisation in marketing and sales at the University of Eastern Finland.

Vaasa city library is moving to a new library system. The library system is used for managing all library materials, loans, and customer data. Due to the change, all library locations will be closed between May 22 and June 6, 2023. During this period, the online library catalogue will also be unavailable.

The amount of misinformation related to COVID-19 is disproportionately high compared to content produced by fact-checkers on Twitter. Misinformation also lives longer online. This is shown by results from an ongoing study on online misinformation about COVID-19.

The year with the pandemic has been exceptional in many ways, but Hanken has risen to the occasion and met the challenges! The Association of MBAs (AMBA) announced on 25 May 2021 that the Hanken School of Economics' Executive MBA programme receives extended accreditation for the next five years. Hanken has been AMBA-accredited since 2008.

Companies equipped with modern technology, such as with the capability to purify water, can control and shape what is understood as the truth about water in rural villages in the global South. Through this, rural villages are made dependent on private companies related to water supply, Yewondwossen Tesfaye states in his doctoral dissertation “Neoliberalism in everyday governmentality: The conduct of rural drinking water and rainwater practices”.

New research shows that using video messages for strategic communications increases the feeling of transparency and inclusion within the company.
