On 26 February 2026, four new professors at Hanken School of Economics held their inaugural lectures: Mika Gabrielsson (marketing), Olli-Pekka Kauppila (management and organisation), Mrinalini Kochupillai (commercial law), and Othmar Lehner (accounting).

As part of a project course in corporate social responsibility and humanitarian logistics at Hanken School of Economics, students have been working closely with various organisations to address real-world sustainability challenges. Hanken alum Yesmith Sánchez started working for the DEI consultancy company Inklusiiv four years ago when diversity, equity, and inclusion issues were not spoken of broadly in Finland. In 2008 the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) published a mandatory sustainability reporting requirement which obligates selected types of listed companies to disclose sustainability information. However, according to new research this regulation fails to promote sustainable practices and may lead to unintended economic consequences.

Companies in regions where climate change denial is widespread among the people are often the most reluctant to tackle climate issues. These companies impose more costs on society and are more likely to commit federal violations related to environmental issues, according to a study conducted by researchers at Hanken School of Economics and the University of Vaasa.

Finland has implemented a subsidy scheme to compensate industrial producers for the indirect costs of the emissions trading system. Maria Wang shows in her dissertation that the subsidy has not been optimally designed. Its recipients are mostly large companies that do not suffer from the increase in electricity costs caused by emissions trading.

As urbanisation and e-commerce reshape our world, Last-Mile Delivery (LMD) has become a critical link in the supply chain and a pivotal sustainability challenge. New research suggests that managers, city leaders, and researchers who focus solely on emissions should rather develop strategies that balance environmental, social, and economic goals and promote collaboration across individual, organisational, and systemic levels.

Hanken School of Economics has started a unique collaboration with Gymnasiet Grankulla Samskola. The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland has awarded a grant of 200,000 EUR for a project to research the matriculation examination in the Swedish language and literature, the test results, and the language of the examinees. Why should we care if some groups want to believe the earth is flat? According to Assistant Professor Carlos Diaz Ruiz at Hanken School of Economics, in a free society, everyone is entitled to their beliefs, even if they are wrong. A new EU-directive requires that all end-of-life textiles, meaning clothes that can’t be used any more, are being collected separately, sorted and then reused or recycled. Vaasa city library is moving to a new library system. The library system is used for managing all library materials, loans, and customer data. The Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG) is working with the most pressing issues in our world: from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and the enormous challenges presented by climate change. This week the Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

At the beginning of the year, a new funding act determining the state's research and development funding in 2024–2030 entered into force. In practice, the implementation of the Act means that the central government budgeted approximately EUR 260 million more for RDI activities each year in 2024-2030.

Hanken School of Economics (Hanken) has been granted EUR 377 000 through EU funding to focus on the resilience of freight transport networks in Europe.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. It is due to be launched into space in just over a year, with drawings by children and young people on board on the satellite. The small satellite is the result of cooperation across the Kvarken. It also demonstrates that the conquest of space is not just for space superpowers.
