New research shows that African governments’ external borrowing can enhance corporate access to capital, not hinder it. The reason is that external debt enhances market confidence. Unlike domestic borrowing, external debt brings fresh capital into the economy, enabling firms, especially listed and internationally active ones, to access financing more easily.

Universities will develop joint approaches to strengthen the quality and impact of researcher training. The aim of these recommendations is to increase the appeal of researcher training and the number of flexible pathways to training, strengthen its relevance to working life and employment opportunities, and speed up graduation.

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. The Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG) is working with the most pressing issues in our world: from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and the enormous challenges presented by climate change. This week the Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

At the beginning of the year, a new funding act determining the state's research and development funding in 2024–2030 entered into force. In practice, the implementation of the Act means that the central government budgeted approximately EUR 260 million more for RDI activities each year in 2024-2030.

Academics in management and organization studies today have been driven into focusing predominantly on building a CV and developing networks, securing funding and producing articles published in high-ranked journals, all of which supports the university’s competitive position in global rankings. As a result, we see academics who neglect their own life in terms of material, emotional or familial sustenance, and social relations. Instead, they devote all their time to precarious work.

Hanken School of Economics has been granted EUR 171 250 through EU funding to investigate how scientific books could become more openly accessible on the internet.
“Free access often results in a huge increase of readers and even citations”, says associate professor Mikael Laakso.

Limiting global warming requires reducing substantially the greenhouse gases that our economies emit, particularly the emissions of firms driving economic activity. The European Union committed to reduce emissions down to net zero by 2050 and Finland by 2035. Meeting these commitments requires continued actions of governments and firms, but also of financial actors.

Accenture, one of the world’s largest consultancies, is the latest member to join the Hanken partner programme.

Conflicts of interest caused by uneven information are everyday in many high-growth ventures and stock listed companies but many of the problems could be alleviated.

Dr. Daniel Pasternack has on 1.10.2021 been appointed Professor of Practice at Hanken for a period of three years. Pasternack has a background as an entrepreneur and is the CEO of the asset management company Elite Alfred Berg.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. It is due to be launched into space in just over a year, with drawings by children and young people on board on the satellite. The small satellite is the result of cooperation across the Kvarken. It also demonstrates that the conquest of space is not just for space superpowers.

Assistant professor Maria Ehrnström-Fuente's current research project "Worlds in transition" focuses on what "economics" really is from an ecological perspective. This was also the starting point for a panel discussion during the Science Carnival in Vaasa on 19.11.2021.

A course ideated, planned and taught by students is currently taking place for the first time in Hanken’s history. The course Sustainable Venture Creation enables students to develop ventures that work towards the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Finnish universities’ vice presidents for education agreed on launching a joint development project to develop student admissions. Entrance examinations will be digitalised, their content developed, and their number significantly reduced. The needs for development were identified jointly by the universities particularly as a result of admissions carried out over the course of the national state of emergency. Many high-tech products contain high-demand metals. These metals are of strategic importance to the world economy but will likely be difficult to access in the future. As critical materials, they are part of society’s critical infrastructure and should therefore be recycled and reused to a greater degree.

Every autumn, a national questionnaire is sent out to all those who have graduated from a university in Finland following up on their careers. "We cannot only distribute the cake, but it must be made to grow, and this requires structural societal reforms that make Finland attractive to investors”, the event's keynote speaker Björn Wahlroos stated.

The nationwide recommendation for remote work has ended and many workplaces have switched to combining remote work and office work in new ways. Different hybrid models will require more planning by both managers and employees and in some cases also redesigning of the office spaces.

The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland donates 1 000 000 euros to Hanken and the fundraising campaign Count on Hanken. The campaign has now received donations exceeding 2,8 million euros.

Why are universities holding on-location entrance examinations during the pandemic?
After carrying out careful assessment and risk analyses, Finnish universities have concluded that holding entrance examinations which require applicants’ physical presence and also involve careful safety arrangements is the best way to implement a fair student admission procedure that takes into account subject-specific special requirements and treats all applicants equally.

Applicants will be informed of how the entrance examinations will be carried out by 16 March. Universities have continued to prepare student admissions for 2021, taking into account the current coronavirus situation. The Governing Board of Helsinki Graduate School of Economics has selected Professor Otto Toivanen from Aalto University to be Academic Director and Professor Hannu Vartiainen from the University of Helsinki to be Academic Deputy Director.

This year’s Anders Wall scholarship is awarded to Hanken student William von der Pahlen. The scholarship of 125 000 SEK is the biggest one awarded to a student at Hanken. The award ceremony will take place later today in Stockholm.

The investigation on the administrative and supporting functions at Hanken is ongoing and the process will continue throughout spring 2018.

Mikko Vesa, Associate Professor in Management and Organisation, has been elected Lecturer of the Year by the Student Union of Hanken. The award was announced during the Student Union’s annual ball in February.

Associate Professor Mikael Laakso, Information System Science, has been appointed to the European Commission's Expert Group on the Future of Scholarly Publishing and Scholarly Communication.

This autumn, Hanken launches a unique course that teaches business valuation with the help of corporate strategy analysis, growth investing and financial statements. The course combines theory and practical tasks during the startup event Slush.

Hanken & SSE Executive Education has appointed Marc Hinnenberg as new Chief Executive Officer.

The registration for Hanken Open University courses started on 9 August and attracted great interest. The Fast track-study places were quickly filled. The Fast track gives admittance to Hanken based on good study results, without an entrance test.

In order to encourage Hanken research groups to apply for external research funding, the School has developed an incentive scheme to promote applications for external funding from sources such as the Academy of Finland and the EU.

Hanken researcher Peter Sarlin is member of the world-first global project to analyse high frequency financial data. The project team consists of researchers from the UK, France, Germany, Finland and the US.

The research-based idea competition Helsinki Challenge has now reached its final stage. An international jury has selected six teams to the final. An additional team was selected through an audience vote on the Pitch Nights held on 6-7 June.

The Academy of Finland has awarded Hanken 1.5 million euro in profiling funding for the period 2017-2021. The funding will be directed to strengthening cross-disciplinary research.

In its meeting on 3 May 2017 the Academic Council (AC) approved of 19 master’s theses. AC postponed its next meeting to 7 June 2017.

Hanken participates in a two-year project that focuses on smart energy systems and solutions (Smart Grids). The Council of Ostrobothnia has granted the project funding and the overall budget is EUR 900 000. The University of Vaasa leads the project.
