How can we build working lives that people can actually sustain over increasingly long careers? Hertta Vuorenmaa, university lecturer at Hanken, researches on the future of work and how we can create more human-centred, inclusive and sustainable workplaces in an era shaped by digitalisation and AI.

A new research project will examine how major changes in the labour market affect crime. Sofia Bougt-Hernnäs, assistant professor of economics at Hanken School of Economics, is part of the project group which has received SEK 1,5 million funding from Handelsbanken’s Research Foundations.

In autumn 2025, a new master’s programme in sustainability reporting and financial analysis was launched as a collaboration between Hanken in Vaasa and Umeå University. It is Finland’s first one-year master’s level programme at university level.

Finland has implemented a subsidy scheme to compensate industrial producers for the indirect costs of the emissions trading system. Hanken School of Economics has started a unique collaboration with Gymnasiet Grankulla Samskola. As part of the pilot course Organising for Sustainable Futures, upper secondary school students are contributing content to an online course that will be offered to Swedish-speaking upper secondary schools around Finland.

The Board of the Hanken Support Foundation has appointed Mia Bengts as Ombudsman for the Foundation from 1 August 2023. Mia Bengts is a Hanken alumna and has a law degree from the University of Helsinki. The Foundation's current Ombudsman Paul Taimitarha will retire on 1 September 2023.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Companies within the EU need to take greater responsibility to prevent social and environmental problems. This is also the case in developing countries, where the majority of production takes place. For that reason, a number of EU corporate responsibility regulations are being prepared.

What’s the hardest part of decision making? Many leaders focus too much on the risk of a bad result, and when we do, we risk being less innovative and creative, stated Mona Riabacke, Ph.D. in Risk and Decision Analysis. Attempts have been made to increase the number of women in the field of technology for decades. However, the attempts have not been successful: In Finland, only one in five technology professionals is a woman. It is often argued that women lack an innate interest in technology. However, the lack of interest is not the cause but the consequence: the technology industry is structured to be masculine.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national indicator of the perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish consumers. The annual ranking conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers.

Hanken student Henrik Helenius has been awarded the Anders Wall scholarship of approximately 20,000 euros for having excelled in entrepreneurship and creative thinking. The scholarship was presented on 10 March 2023 at the Anders Wall Foundation's scholarship award ceremony in Stockholm. Currently, several regulators including the EU are adopting new corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure laws. These laws aim to encourage companies to develop a responsible approach to business. Consequently, various effects on the company and its external stakeholders are likely to arise, some of which may be unintended.

Many projects are doomed from the onset by insufficient attention to project concept design. As a result, projects – even when on time, within budget and according to specifications – can fail to meet the needs of buyers, end-users or contractors.

Responsible investment has traditionally mainly focused on environmental issues, but the social responsibility dimension is becoming increasingly important. The war in Ukraine and the pandemic may be a contributing factor, says Emilia Vähämaa, Wärtsilä Associate Professor at the Hanken School of Economics.

With recent demographic trends towards ageing populations in many Western countries, issues of older age, ageing and ageism are now higher on some political and organizational agendas than in previously. One central question of policy interest on different levels of decision-making has been to prolong working and employed life.
