This year’s Anders Wall Scholarship has been awarded to Maxine Buchert, founder and CEO of Meridian, a marketing agency specialising in organic growth on social media. PhD Mrinalini Kochupillai has been appointed professor of sustainability and business law at the Department of Accounting and Commercial Law at Hanken School of Economics. Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

The business incubator Hanken Business Lab at Hanken School of Economics has been granted €750,000 by the Louise and Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation for the next five years. Markus Wartiovaara (Dr. Econ.) has been appointed a three-year tenure as Professor of Practice at Hanken School of Economics. Wartiovaara, who has a background as an internet and family entrepreneur, is the director of the business incubator Hanken Business Lab.

Climate change is an important driver of humanitarian needs. Yet, humanitarian operations also contribute to environmental pollution and degradation. Hanken School of Economics has received over 270 000 euros in EU-funding for a research project that aims to design guidelines and support actions for circular economy in the humanitarian sector.

The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the collaboration among nine European universities. According to rough estimates, there are hundreds of millions of human workers globally who work with animals on a daily basis. A new research project will help develop better welfare for animals in work settings. The focus is on human-dog working relations in different organisations, including service-, scent detection-, therapy-, pain- and cancer dogs at work.

Hanken doctoral student Joosua Virtanen has been awarded a Fulbright Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship. Virtanen is one of three Finns awarded this prestigious one-year grant and will travel to the University of California, Berkeley this autumn to conduct research related to his doctoral thesis.

Demand for agricultural commodities in the EU are driving land use change in biodiversity-rich countries in for example Africa and Latin America, leading to major biodiversity losses. Hanken School of Economics is part of a large EU-project that aims to generate new knowledge and tools on how to make agrifood systems more sustainable.

Hanken’s master level students now have the opportunity to apply for a two-week summer course "Business and Innovation in China" in Shanghai, organized by the Nordic Centre at Fudan University, one of China's top academic institutions. New research shows that food security research and action need to emphasise distribution and retail in addition to agricultural production.

In its meeting on 3 May 2017 the Academic Council (AC) approved of 19 master’s theses. AC postponed its next meeting to 7 June 2017.

Hanken participates in a two-year project that focuses on smart energy systems and solutions (Smart Grids). The Council of Ostrobothnia has granted the project funding and the overall budget is EUR 900 000. The University of Vaasa leads the project.
