Hanken School of Economics has received over EUR 600 000 funding for joining the EMANAIRE (Empowering Human Agency in AI-Augmented Futures of Work) network. The project will study how AI is changing work and organisations, and is funded by Horizon Europe.

Audit and advisory firm BDO is the latest company to join Hanken’s Partner Programme. “We want Hanken students to see BDO as an attractive future workplace,” says Talent Acquisition Coordinator Ansa Valmu.

On 26 February 2026, four new professors at Hanken School of Economics held their inaugural lectures: Mika Gabrielsson (marketing), Olli-Pekka Kauppila (management and organisation), Mrinalini Kochupillai (commercial law), and Othmar Lehner (accounting).

Companies in regions where climate change denial is widespread among the people are often the most reluctant to tackle climate issues. These companies impose more costs on society and are more likely to commit federal violations related to environmental issues, according to a study conducted by researchers at Hanken School of Economics and the University of Vaasa.

Finland has implemented a subsidy scheme to compensate industrial producers for the indirect costs of the emissions trading system. Maria Wang shows in her dissertation that the subsidy has not been optimally designed. Its recipients are mostly large companies that do not suffer from the increase in electricity costs caused by emissions trading.

As urbanisation and e-commerce reshape our world, Last-Mile Delivery (LMD) has become a critical link in the supply chain and a pivotal sustainability challenge. New research suggests that managers, city leaders, and researchers who focus solely on emissions should rather develop strategies that balance environmental, social, and economic goals and promote collaboration across individual, organisational, and systemic levels.

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. The Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Research Institute (HUMLOG) is working with the most pressing issues in our world: from the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine and the enormous challenges presented by climate change. This week the Institute celebrated its 15th anniversary.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

At the beginning of the year, a new funding act determining the state's research and development funding in 2024–2030 entered into force. In practice, the implementation of the Act means that the central government budgeted approximately EUR 260 million more for RDI activities each year in 2024-2030.

The Climate University network, which Hanken is a member of and is coordinated by the University of Helsinki, has formed a teaching cooperation contract between 18 universities. With these new contracts, a majority of Finnish university students can take the network’s climate and sustainability -themed courses.

Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. The Alumnus/Alumna has also kept contact with Hanken and shown an interest in the development of Hanken after their graduation. This year, Hanken appointed Heidi Schauman as the Alumna of the Year.

Hanken alumnus Kurt Björklund donates one million euros to the ongoing fundraising campaign Count on Hanken. With his donation, Björklund wishes to inspire Hanken's alumni to participate in the campaign and thereby strengthen Hanken's core activities.

In collaboration with Novia University of Applied Sciences and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Hanken is currently calling for expressions of interest in developing hydrogen infrastructure in the Ostrobothnia region, as part of the H2 Ecosystem Roadmap. The mainstream approach to ensuring sufficient food and nutrition security is focused on production and consumption. New research shows that food security research and action need to emphasise distribution and retail in addition to agricultural production.

Circumstances like the present pandemic highlight the importance of cross-sector cooperation between different players. However, recent research indicates that the closer the cooperation between for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, the greater the risk of conflicts due to a clash of values.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII), developed jointly with the Norwegian School of Economics, offers Finnish consumers the opportunity, for the first time, to evaluate the innovativeness of companies selling services and products.
