It is extremely regrettable and entirely against Hanken’s values that adult content has been displayed in the men’s restroom at Cella Nova, which is the Student Association in Vaasa’s premises in the centre of town. We take a clear stance against what has occurred. The Student Association’s new board swiftly decided to end this practice immediately and has issued an apology on behalf of the entire association.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has appointed PhD Sofia Stolt as a member of the Matriculation Examination Board for the years 2025-2027. Hanken doctoral student Joosua Virtanen has been awarded a Fulbright Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship. Virtanen is one of three Finns awarded this prestigious one-year grant and will travel to the University of California, Berkeley this autumn to conduct research related to his doctoral thesis.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken's Board elected Professor Mika Gabrielsson as Dean of education. He was elected for a three-year term starting on 1 August 2023. Gabrielsson is currently professor in international business with specialisation in marketing and sales at the University of Eastern Finland.

At its meeting on 19 April 2023, Hanken School of Economic's Board appointed Gyöngyi Kovács, Mika Gabrielsson and Sören Kock as new deans. In addition to this, the Board has decided to launch a new bachelor's programme in English, in parallel with the traditional bachelor's degree programme in Swedish. The Academic Council at Hanken has recently approved some structural changes to the master’s programme in English. Starting from the autumn 2023 Hanken offers nine master’s programmes (MSc Economics and Business Administration) in English.

The Board of Hanken uses two parallel processes in the recruitment of a new rector. The recruitment started on 10 March 2022. Applicants have been able to submit their own application, and then an external consultant also works with direct recruitment. Both channels have gathered interested applicants who meet the formal requirements.

At its meeting on 28 February 2022, the board of Hanken decided on the process for electing a new rector. This time, there will be an open application process in combination with the possibility of direct recruitment. The recruitment process will be launched during the second week of March.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. It is due to be launched into space in just over a year, with drawings by children and young people on board on the satellite. The small satellite is the result of cooperation across the Kvarken. It also demonstrates that the conquest of space is not just for space superpowers.

One central question of policy interest on different levels of decision-making has been to prolong working and employed life.

Quantum is a versatile meeting place that offers access to company and financial databases and allows for the handling of big data. Modern technology makes it possible to stream all classes and other events, as well as allowing for keeping up with real-time financial news. Quantum, made possible by donations, opened in February 2020.

Political discussions about whether to merge Hanken in Vaasa with Åbo Akademi University or with the University of Vaasa have been ongoing ever since Hanken in Vaasa was established in 1980. Today Sören Kock, dean and rector’s representative in Vaasa, sees the possibility of Hanken in Vaasa remaining as Hanken in a positive light. “I find it fascinating that a Triple-Crown accredited university manages to operate in two locations,” Kock remarks.

The Board on 20.10.2020 appointed Professor David B. Grant as new Dean of Research and Social Impact at Hanken. His term of office is until 31.7.2021. David B. Grant is Professor of Supply Chain Management & Social Responsibility at Hanken.

Björn Wahlroos is one of the lead educators on the open online MOOC course Principles of Wealth Management that started 26.10.2020. Wahlroos has made a remarkable career in the field of banking, and he has served both as a professor and as chairman of the board at Hanken.

New research argues that social capital, as measured by civic norms and density of associational networks, reduces corporate managers’ tendencies to hide bad news. This results in higher accounting conservatism, which is a cautious approach that admits lower profits along with greater losses. Social capital also positively influences boardroom gender diversity and corporate governance.

In order to ensure a more resilient and flexible society in the future it’s important for countries not to isolate themselves, but rather to take global regulatory actions through international agreements and that applies as much to fighting pandemics and climate change, said Topi Miettinen, Professor at Hanken School of Economics, during an online event at Hanken.
