Students and tech enthusiasts gathered at Hanken from 9–11 October 2025 to take part in the Quantum x AI Hackathon. During the event, organised in collaboration with Ultrahack, participants developed tools that converged artificial intelligence, quantum computing, portfolio optimisation, and cybersecurity to shape the future of finance.

Hanken is now looking for students to serve as official student ambassadors on behalf of the university. The role is based on a zero-hour contract with Hanken as the employer and offers an hourly wage of 15 euros. The employment contract is fixed-term and valid until 31 May 2026.

Many Finnish small and medium-sized (SMEs) companies are developing innovative and high-quality sustainable products and services. However, selling those products can be challenging. Hanken School of Economics has received 245,000 euros from Business Finland to equip SMEs with tools for successfully marketing sustainable offerings and achieving profitability.

There are significant differences in how prepared Finnish companies are to comply with EU regulations on corporate responsibility. This is shown by a new study conducted by several Hanken researchers, among others, on behalf of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Despite the growing enthusiasm for green acquisitions, skepticism remains. The potential greening effects can be risky and time-consuming, and they don't always materialise. A new book in Finnish, Vastuullinen vuokranantaja (Eng. The responsible landlord), delves into landlord responsibility from all ESG perspectives: environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and good governance. The book is written by Hanna Silvola, associate professor of accounting at Hanken School of Economics and journalist Kati Valjus.

Hanken School of Economics has started a unique collaboration with Gymnasiet Grankulla Samskola. As part of the pilot course Organising for Sustainable Futures, upper secondary school students are contributing content to an online course that will be offered to Swedish-speaking upper secondary schools around Finland.

At the beginning of November, Hanken School of Economics held a conferment of doctoral degrees and at the same time two jubilee doctors, Alf-Erik Lerviks and Christian Junnelius, were conferred. Here, the jubilee doctors, who graduated 50 years ago, share their recollections from those days.

Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

Climate change adds to the complexity to the environment in which humanitarian supply chains operate. In the meanwhile, humanitarian supply chains would contribute to the exacerbation of climate change if a greener approach of management is not adopted. Collaboration between scientists, humanitarian practitioners and beneficiaries can help humanitarian supply chains to become more prepared to climatological hazards and more sustainable.

Students at Hanken have participated in a survey on how students in the Helsinki metropolitan area view housing, well-being and the future in the metropolitan area. Almost 70 per cent of the students are worried about their livelihood when the cost of living rises, and two thirds think that social crises have a negative impact on their confidence in the future.

A new EU-directive requires that all end-of-life textiles, meaning clothes that can’t be used any more, are being collected separately, sorted and then reused or recycled. According to Associate Professor Anna Aminoff textile recycling processes, including separate collection and sorting, are expensive and complicated, and puts a lot of responsibility on the consumers – but things are hopefully slowly getting better.

At the international level, states from the Global South (i.e. Africa, Asia and Latin America) agree that responsible business means transferring knowhow, resources and technology from the north to the south, and that companies must not violate state sovereignty. At the national level, these states can steer foreign companies' CSR activities, so that resources are channelled towards public and private actors in positions of power.

Climate change is an important driver of humanitarian needs. Yet, humanitarian operations also contribute to environmental pollution and degradation. Hanken School of Economics has received over 270 000 euros in EU-funding for a research project that aims to design guidelines and support actions for circular economy in the humanitarian sector.

There is still plenty of untapped tourism potential in Ostrobothnia. Hanken School of Economics is thus partnering with the relevant tourism stakeholders to draw up a road map of the various local players’ shared visions of how tourism could be developed in the province.

Limiting global warming requires reducing substantially the greenhouse gases that our economies emit, particularly the emissions of firms driving economic activity. The European Union committed to reduce emissions down to net zero by 2050 and Finland by 2035. Meeting these commitments requires continued actions of governments and firms, but also of financial actors.

Sustainable digitalization and technological development was the theme of the think tank organized by the university alliance ENGAGE.EU in Mannheim at the end of September. Hanken, a member of the alliance since May, was represented by Associate Professor Mikael Laakso.

Since 2020 climate-related disasters are the number one cause for displacement in the world rather than conflicts - and a lot of conflicts these days are also climate induced. The Do no harm-mandate in the humanitarian context should include environmental issues but is still neglected all too often, new research shows.

The new rector of the Hanken School of Economics, Ingmar Björkman, wants to engage the community in decision-making processes. Quantum is a versatile meeting place that offers access to company and financial databases and allows for the handling of big data. Modern technology makes it possible to stream all classes and other events, as well as allowing for keeping up with real-time financial news. Quantum, made possible by donations, opened in February 2020.

Although a state of emergency is not the optimal situation for developing novel innovations, a newly published Hanken study shows how the Covid crisis presented certain businesses with the opportunity to take their operations in an entirely new strategic direction.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan for advancing sustainable development globally. The growing importance of ESG data for financial decision making and for achieving sustainability goals was the topic of a webinar hosted by Hanken School of Economics on 11.6.2020. The speakers called for increased standardisation, transparency, availability and reliability of sustainability data in the face of pressing climate and environmental demands.

The latest report by the Helsinki GSE Situation Room states that the growth in the number of applications for unemployment benefit paid by Kela has been greatest in the Uusimaa region. The report is presented at an open access webinar in Zoom on Thursday, 7 May at 8 am.

The Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE) works to increase the quantity and quality of economic education and training in Finland, as well as promote cooperation between economics and other academic fields.

The new eight storey building in Arabianranta, Helsinki, combines student housing and state of the art sports facilities.The building accomodates apartments on the lower levels and a sports center including a fitness gym and a test laboratory on top.

This year’s Anders Wall scholarship is awarded to Hanken student Frans Westerlund. The scholarship of 125 000 SEK is the biggest one awarded to a student at Hanken. The award ceremony takes place 11.3.2019 at the concert house in Stockholm.

Vesa Vihriälä, DSocSci, has been appointed Professor of Practice at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics. Vihriälä will assume the position on 1 July 2019. The position is housed at University of Helsinki.

Hanken is involved in two building projects and now the first house is ready and accepted new tenants from 1 February 2019. There are still apartments available and open for applications.

Låna en Hankencykel för kortare möten och ärenden utanför Hanken. Hanken har skaffat 2 cyklar till Helsingfors och en till Vasa som personalen kan låna över dagen för möten.

This year’s Anders Wall scholarship was awarded to Hanken student Emil Rantatulkkila. The award was presented at the concert house Musikaliska Akademien in Stockholm on Anders Wall’s birthday 10 March 2017.
