The research project, led by Associate Professor Tapani Rinta-Kahila at Hanken School of Economics, investigates why artificial intelligence (AI) systems used by governments sometimes fail, causing harm to citizens and triggering legal challenges, and how such risks can be recognised and prevented.

This year’s Anders Wall Scholarship has been awarded to Maxine Buchert, founder and CEO of Meridian, a marketing agency specialising in organic growth on social media. The scholarship, worth over 18,000 euros (200,000 SEK), was awarded by Charlotte Wall, chair of the Anders Wall Foundation, at a ceremony in Stockholm 10 March 2026.

Hanken School of Economics has been welcomed as a partner of the European University alliance ENGAGE.EU. The alliance consists of leading European universities in business, economics, and the social sciences, which aims to provide European citizens with the set of skills and competences needed to tackle major societal challenges.

The Climate University network, which Hanken is a member of and is coordinated by the University of Helsinki, has formed a teaching cooperation contract between 18 universities. With these new contracts, a majority of Finnish university students can take the network’s climate and sustainability -themed courses.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. It is due to be launched into space in just over a year, with drawings by children and young people on board on the satellite. The small satellite is the result of cooperation across the Kvarken. It also demonstrates that the conquest of space is not just for space superpowers.

Professor Luk Van Wassenhove är en pionjär inom området för humanitära operationer. Professor Luk Van Wassenhove is a pioneer in the area of humanitarian operations. He strives to close the loop between theory and practice by: (i) finding relevant problems in the practice of humanitarian operations, (ii) using rigorous research methods to gain insights on these problems, (iii) publishing his findings in peer-reviewed outlets, pedagogical case studies and other publications, and (iv) giving back to practice through implementable recommendations. Luk is also very generous with his time and contributes actively to strengthen the research community.

Assistant professor Maria Ehrnström-Fuente's current research project "Worlds in transition" focuses on what "economics" really is from an ecological perspective. This was also the starting point for a panel discussion during the Science Carnival in Vaasa on 19.11.2021.

The amount of misinformation related to COVID-19 is disproportionately high compared to content produced by fact-checkers on Twitter. Misinformation also lives longer online. This is shown by results from an ongoing study on online misinformation about COVID-19.

Electronic or e-waste is the fastest growing waste stream globally. In 2019, a record of 53.6 million metric tons of globally generated e-waste was reported. Electronic devices contain an extensive list of precious metals as well as harmful chemicals; if no product recovery procedures are applied, we lose scarce resources and create a negative environmental footprint.

A course ideated, planned and taught by students is currently taking place for the first time in Hanken’s history. The course Sustainable Venture Creation enables students to develop ventures that work towards the UN’s sustainable development goals.

How to speed up the growth in Finland? This was discussed at the traditional seminar Toppsemi, which was held at The Swedish School of Economics Hanken in Helsinki on 26 October. "We cannot only distribute the cake, but it must be made to grow, and this requires structural societal reforms that make Finland attractive to investors”, the event's keynote speaker Björn Wahlroos stated.

Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. The Alumnus/Alumna has also kept contact with Hanken and shown an interest in the development of Hanken after their graduation. This year, Hanken appointed Heidi Schauman as the Alumna of the Year.

Many countries in Europe are struggling to achieve higher vaccination coverage in the fight against covid-19. This has raised the question of how more people could be motivated to take the vaccine. A new study, which Hanken School of Economics has been involved in and which was published in the scientific journal Science, shows that a small payment equivalent to 20 euros made more people get vaccinated in Sweden.

In collaboration with Novia University of Applied Sciences and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Hanken is currently calling for expressions of interest in developing hydrogen infrastructure in the Ostrobothnia region, as part of the H2 Ecosystem Roadmap. The project, funded by the EU's regional development funds, has been approved by the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia.

Ny forskning visar att man också måste betona distribution och detaljhandel i samband med livsmedelstrygghet.

On 19–20 November, researchers in different disciplines will be discussing some of the latest scientific findings and fascinating research projects in the centre of Vaasa. All the universities and universities of applied sciences in Vaasa will contribute to this science celebration of rare proportions, organised jointly with the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland.

Hanken’s master’s programme has been ranked 55th in this year’s edition of the Financial Times’ Masters in Management ranking. This is a significant rise in comparison to last year (ranked 70th). Financial Times annually ranks the best master’s programmes world-wide.

There is a need for more economic thinking, discussions and reasoning in Finland. This was emphasized by Helsinki's newly elected mayor Juhana Vartiainen, who spoke to the new students at the opening of the academic year at the Hanken School of Economics on Wednesday.

New research shows that a service-providing organisation facilitates the well-being of individuals by supporting, socialising, and empowering them. Technology, service environment and design, and internal practices and arrangements also contribute to the individuals’ well-being.

Research funding is increasingly granted to large, multidisciplinary consortia in which researchers from several universities, but also other societal actors participate. Researchers at Hanken have actively applied for funding for such projects, and in the spring of 2021, a record number of researchers at the university received highly welcomed news from the funders.
