In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

Critical materials refer to either materials that are not sufficiently available or materials that are dangerous. It is important to secure the reliable and undisturbed availability of metals and other materials necessary for ICT applications, communications and new environmental and energy technologies. In the circular economy of cities, critical materials are needed for instance, in households, buildings, infrastructures, and high technology products. These critical materials must be reclaimed for recycling and reuse towards the end of the product lifecycle.

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

The WREC Project seeks to reduce the adverse environmental consequences of humanitarian logistics through awareness, practical guidance, and real-time environmental expertise. The project is coordinated by the Global Logistics Cluster and supported by a coalition of humanitarian organizations.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. This PhD and Masters level intensive course will dive into the operations surrounding humanitarian operations and disaster assistance with instruction from globally recognized leaders in the humanitarian operations research field. PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. One of our objectives in our research sub-strategy is to advocate responsibility and sustainability. To achieve this we aim to strongly encourage researchers’ efforts towards open science and open access of publications as well as expect all researchers to link their research projects and outputs to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Professor (emeritus), Christian Grönroos, is the initiator and first chair of CERS, Centre for Relationship Marketing and Service Management at Hanken School of Economics, one of the first research centres in the service research area. This theme is dedicated to strategizing for systemic transformation. More specifically, it involves developing and implementing business models to fundamentally change an entire system, whether it's social, economic, environmental, or organizational. Systemic transformation aims to alter the underlying structures, relationships, and dynamics that define how the system operates.

This is an industry collaboration project where the researcher works closely with the partner company, a logistics service provider offering circular economy (CE) services. The research focuses on extending the lifespan and circularity of consumer electronics. The academic focus of the project is to deepen the understanding of supply chains and logistics in this context and to theorize circular business models and ecosystems, utilizing rich data insights gained from industry collaboration. The industry impact and practical learnings are an important part of the project. It aims to provide knowledge that can help Finnish industry drive sustainable growth through the extension of product lifespans, thereby strengthening societal resilience. The results should support Finnish industry in developing the capabilities needed to take advantage of EU regulation and CE business opportunities.

The Corona-virus outbreak is continuing to spread. By beginning of February, the number of infected people surpasses 42,000 infections, and the death toll continues to rise. As authorities and responders are struggling to contain the spread, news about mass quarantine camps or shortages of personal protective equipment threaten the health systems globally, fuelled by rumours and mis-information.
The disruptions of (medical) supply chains, the lack of capacity to treat patients and the spread of rumours fuel an atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust, hampering an effective response. While traditional models of disease outbreaks largely focus on infection rates, new methods are needed to integrate behaviour from the bottom up, and integrated in macro-level models to coordinate the response world-wide.

The Innovation Index is a national ranking of the most innovative companies in Finland according according to the Finnish consumers. This is because consumers, rather than experts or business representatives, are the most important stakeholders for assessing a company's innovation capacity.

Every five years Hanken organises a solemn conferment of doctoral degrees. All who obtained a doctoral degree within the past 5 years will receive an invitation to accept their doctoral hat and degree under a traditional ceremony. At the same time honorary doctors are conferred in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements or cultural and societal achievements. Hanken also honours jubilee doctors who got their doctoral degree 50 years ago.

During the solemn conferment ceremony and the conferment dinner that follows, different dress codes apply to honorary doctors, jubilee doctors and promovendi, academic staff and other guests. Hanken has two parallel tenure tracks, a research-oriented tenure track and a teaching-oriented tenure track. The qualification requirements are set in the Personnel Instruction. Rector has also established guidelines for the tenure track systems regarding recruitment and promotion to the next tenure level within the current system.

The Finance section at Hanken School of Economics organizes the Banking Research Workshop annually in collaboration with the University of Vaasa. The workshop brings together international researchers and experts to share and discuss current research on banking, financial intermediation, and financial stability.

Hanken School of Economics’ Solemn Conferment of Doctoral Degrees will take place in Helsinki in the Assembly Hall Friday 1 November at 2 p.m. Members of the academic staff gather in auditorium Maximum on the second floor by 1.45 p.m. and will enter the Assembly Hall when the other guests have taken their seats.
