Critical materials refer to either materials that are not sufficiently available or materials that are dangerous. It is important to secure the reliable and undisturbed availability of metals and other materials necessary for ICT applications, communications and new environmental and energy technologies. In the circular economy of cities, critical materials are needed for instance, in households, buildings, infrastructures, and high technology products. These critical materials must be reclaimed for recycling and reuse towards the end of the product lifecycle.

PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. With the recent geopolitical shifts, including the war in Ukraine and both countries joining NATO, the project seeks to understand how these changes impact societal resilience. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. It will also explore how critical infrastructure and supply chains need to be reoriented to support Nordic integration across defence and crisis preparedness. The research is a collaboration between the Swedish Defence University and the Hanken School of Economics, leveraging their expertise in total defence and crisis preparedness.

As trailblazer for the Physical Internet, ReMuNet pursues the vision to enable and incentivize synchro-modal relay-transport on European rail, road, and inland waterways to increase the holistic network resilience. It significantly reduces emissions and boosts freight transport corridor efficiency in case of disruptive events.

In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

Hanken was awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” logo by the European Commission in spring 2015. An internal review for renewal assessment was carried out in the view of our strategy in 2021 and submitted in January 2022. CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

Out of the study places to the Bachelor programme in English 40 % is reserved for certificate-based admission.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. This PhD and Masters level intensive course will dive into the operations surrounding humanitarian operations and disaster assistance with instruction from globally recognized leaders in the humanitarian operations research field. Master's level advanced course to be held in period 3 and 4 2020, providing hand-on experience to students on CSR and humanitarian logistics issues by working on real-world projects. The applications open on 25.11.2019 and close on 12.12.2019.

Hanken is governed by the University Collegium, the Board, the Rector and the Academic Council consisting of two sections: the Education Council and the Doctoral Studies Council. The academic subjects and faculty belong to one of Hanken's four Departments, each led by a Head of Department.

Hanken has two parallel tenure tracks, a research-oriented tenure track and a teaching-oriented tenure track. The qualification requirements are set in the Personnel Instruction. In Finland, people enjoy universal healthcare and one of the best educational systems in the world, contributing to a high standard of living for all. On this page we have gathered useful information about practicalities to keep in mind when preparing a move to Finland, or what to do once you have arrived here.

Hanken offers a quiet room that is open to all students and staff during the opening hours of the Helsinki main campus. The room is located right next to the entrance at Runeberginkatu/Runebergsgatan 10. We kindly ask all users to be considerate of others and to help maintain the room’s quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

Hanken encourages students to further develop their language skills and gain international work experience. Starting from the 2026-2027 academic year, students may apply for a grant for an internship in a German-, Spanish-, or French-speaking country, provided that the internship is conducted in one of these languages and the student has attained CEFR level B1.2 in Business Language and Communication Skills, i.e. has successfully completed at least a Level 4 course in French, Spanish, or German.

Hanken Quantum is the university's data lab which provides access to numerous enterprise databases for both students and staff. Modern technology allows for the streaming of all teaching and events as well as the real-time following of financial news.

Our purpose is to bridge the gap between data and business through organizing educational events and courses, bringing together key players from different industries, and conducting cutting-edge research into how data can be used to create better business and a better world.

To be eligible to apply in the main admission round you must fulfil the requirements below. Within the main admission you can apply to all Master's degree programmes at Hanken with tuition in English, except for the Double Degree programme with Umeå University in Sweden.

Even though Finland is a pretty small country, we have managed to top world rankings in pretty much everything. You have probably heard that we have the best educational system in the world? And not to brag, but did you know that we Finns have (for the 6th year in a row!) won the title as the happiest people in the world, that Finland has been ranked as one of the safest and best-governed country in the world and that the real Santa Claus live here?

Vaasa represents the centre of the entrepreneurial atmosphere and the energy cluster of the region and home to e.g. the UNESCO Natural world heritage site Kvarken Archipelago. Located by the coast, Vaasa as a city combines beautiful nature with urban city life and is known as 'the sunny city' of Finland. The income level in Vaasa is almost as high as in the capital region but cost of living is much lower, which means there is plenty of money left to spend on living and you can live very comfortable either in an apartment in the city centre or in deatached houses a bit outside of the city. Vaasa is a true student city, making it a lively, international and vibrant place to live in.

JHLSCM publishes state of the art research, in the field of humanitarian and development aid logistics and supply chain management. It targets academics and practitioners in humanitarian public and private sectors.

All Hanken graduates represent the school and are thus ambassadors. Hanken is very proud and grateful for all the role models that exist around the school and welcomes collaboration with alumni. Within Hanken there is also a group of alumni who are involved in the development of Hanken’s core operation and are thereby appointed Hanken Ambassadors. The Hanken Ambassadors contribute greatly to the development of Hanken as an international business school with close ties to the business community.
