In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

The winners are two distinguished pioneers of service research branch, Professors Mary Jo Bitner and Stephen Brown from Arizona State University. We wanted to know more about their thoughts of services marketing and academic life!

Hanken was awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” logo by the European Commission in spring 2015. An internal review for renewal assessment was carried out in the view of our strategy in 2021 and submitted in January 2022. Vaasa represents the centre of the entrepreneurial atmosphere and the energy cluster of the region and home to e.g. the UNESCO Natural world heritage site Kvarken Archipelago. Located by the coast, Vaasa as a city combines beautiful nature with urban city life and is known as 'the sunny city' of Finland. The income level in Vaasa is almost as high as in the capital region but cost of living is much lower, which means there is plenty of money left to spend on living and you can live very comfortable either in an apartment in the city centre or in deatached houses a bit outside of the city. Vaasa is a true student city, making it a lively, international and vibrant place to live in.

The DigCBA project contributes to the responsible use of digital cash-based assistance (CBA) in refugee crisis to support policy makers with the selection and use of the most suitable digital technologies (e.g., mobile money, blockchain) for delivering CBA to refugees. The project consists of an interdisciplinary team of humanitarian operations researchers with the focus on ICT, supply chain management, information systems and organizations studies.

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

With the recent geopolitical shifts, including the war in Ukraine and both countries joining NATO, the project seeks to understand how these changes impact societal resilience. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. It will also explore how critical infrastructure and supply chains need to be reoriented to support Nordic integration across defence and crisis preparedness. The research is a collaboration between the Swedish Defence University and the Hanken School of Economics, leveraging their expertise in total defence and crisis preparedness.

A theme week around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be held for the second time at Hanken in Helsinki and Vaasa from 19th to 26th November 2019. Hanken shows support for Ukraine by offering students who have fled the war an opportunity to continue studying. Totally 30 independent study rights in Vaasa and Helsinki will be granted. If the demand for these study rights exceeds 30, Rector may later decide separately that Hanken grants more. Studies conducted via an independent study right are free of charge. An independent study right cannot not entitle the student to a degree at Hanken.

The Department focuses on the two major subjects of Accounting and Commercial law. These subjects are integrated and linked together in order to offer the student a more holistic view of business, law and commercial practice. The Department's courses afford students the opportunity to study an exciting range of related topics. Research and teaching at the Department are  aimed towards giving students a good theoretical foundation, in addition to the acquisition of practical and relevant skills required in the marketplace.

Critical materials refer to either materials that are not sufficiently available or materials that are dangerous. It is important to secure the reliable and undisturbed availability of metals and other materials necessary for ICT applications, communications and new environmental and energy technologies. In the circular economy of cities, critical materials are needed for instance, in households, buildings, infrastructures, and high technology products. These critical materials must be reclaimed for recycling and reuse towards the end of the product lifecycle.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. This PhD and Masters level intensive course will dive into the operations surrounding humanitarian operations and disaster assistance with instruction from globally recognized leaders in the humanitarian operations research field. The summer school also serves as a forum for operations management students from all over the world to exchange research, concepts, and develop internetional networks.

Flerfaktorsautentisering (MFA), även kallad tvåfaktorsautentisering (2FA), är en metod som avsevärt förbättrar säkerheten för ditt Hanken-konto. I praktiken betyder det att du bekräftar inloggningar med telefonen, vilket betyder att någon som stulit ditt lösenord inte kan logga in.

Behöver du stöd för att hitta fokus då du jobbar med din avhandling? Har du svårt att komma igång på morgonen? Eller känner du dig ensam med att sitta och kämpa med din avhandling? Då är co-writing på Teams något för dig.

Ett rekordantal på nästan 150 personer sökte till Hankens mentorskapsprogram 2023. Mentorn Yrsa Landsdorff och adepten Wilma Leskinen är två av dem. Mentorskapsprogrammet har gett Landsdorff värdefulla insikter om den yngre generationen och Leskinen har lyckats uppnå det mål hon ställde upp i början av året.

Via Hankens kanal för visselblåsning kan en person, som i arbetsrelaterad verksamhet vid Hanken får information om eller en misstanke om verksamhet som skadar allmänintresset inom nedan specificerade områden, göra en anmälan om sin misstanke. Genom kanalen för visselblåsning vill Hanken förebygga och upptäcka eventuella missförhållanden samt skydda de personer som rapporterat om ett eventuellt missförhållande.

Unwrapping Finland med Hanken är en videoserie som gjorts för att stöda nyanlända i Finland. Den riktas särskilt åt Hankens internationella studeranden, men kan också vara nyttig för fakultetsmedlemmar och arbetstagare som är nya i Finland. Hankens uppgift är att utbilda svenskkunniga ekonomer för näringslivet såväl i hemlandet som utomlands. Goda kommunikationsfärdigheter i svenska utgör således grunden för dina studier och är en väsentlig del av din professionella expertis. Microsoft Teams is Hanken's communication platform and collaboration tool for all employees.

A record number of almost 150 people applied to the 2023 Hanken mentorship programme. Mentor Yrsa Landsdorff and mentee Wilma Leskinen are two of them.
