Language Requirements

Sufficient language skills are required in order to apply to the Hanken PhD Programme. It is mandatory to formally demonstrate sufficient skills in English or Swedish.

English

All applicants needs to fulfill one of the following language requirements:

 

Most test organisations do offer traditional test-taking at local test-centers, please check the websites of the test organisations for more information.

Applicants who fulfill one of the following criteria in English or in Swedish are exempted from the language test requirement:

  • Upper secondary school, Bachelor's or Master’s degree in English obtained from a recognized university or polytechnic in an EU/EEA country
    • In case the degree is a double degree/triple degree/transnational degree/joint
      degree, at least 50 % of the degree needs to have been obtained while the student physically has been studying in an EU/EEA country in order to fulfil the language requirement.
  • Upper secondary school, Bachelor's or Master’s degree in English obtained from a recognized university in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or United States 
    • In case the degree is a double degree/triple degree/transnational degree/joint degree, at least 50 % of the degree needs to have been obtained while the student physically has been studying in the country in question in order to fulfil the language requirement
  • Applicants with a Finnish Bachelors or Master’s degree who with their previous education can show that they have obtained the skills required in order to follow the developments in the own area of study and to be active in an international environment according to the Government Degree regarding university degrees (Valtioneuvoston asetusyliopistojen tutkinnoista 794/2004, 6§ mom. 2)

NB! If you do not fulfill any of the criteria mentioned above you need to take a language test.

When should I take the language proficiency test?

  • Register for a test date as early as possible so you can take the test well in advance before the start of the application period.
     
    • Note! You must submit your test taker's copy of the test result with your application.
      • It take up to 20 working days to receive some test results - it is your responsability to check the delivery times for the test results so that you timely can sumbit the test result.
         
  • It is your responsibility to find out the test dates and closing dates for registration for the language tests.
  • If you already have a sufficient test result, check the validity of your result and make arrangements for a new test well in advance, if necessary.
     
  • Remember to request the test organisation to give Hanken access to your test result so that we can verify your result in the test organiser's verification portal.

 

Tests need to be valid and officially verifiable. Language tests are valid for two years. Older tests are not accepted.

No other tests are accepted.
