How could we increase sustainability in urban last mile deliveries? Can innovations both reduce the negative effects of e-commerce and simultaneously create a top delivery system for consumers? Hanken School of Economics is coordinating a Nordic research project that will dive into these questions.

In the complex realm of humanitarian operations, waste poses a formidable challenge, threatening the sustainability of critical endeavours. The deployment of field hospitals and livelihood programmes with waste-picking components exacerbate the issue, demanding urgent attention. Conventional waste management methods fall short, contributing to environmental degradation and jeopardising the well-being of waste pickers. In this context, the EU-funded WORM project will revolutionise waste management in the humanitarian sector through innovative solutions and a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach. Specifically, it will integrate bio-based technological solutions, leverage procurement for waste reduction, improve waste management methods and prioritise the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM unites medical and humanitarian organisations, suppliers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners.

The project called SAFE-MET has the aim to examine and test ways to strengthen societies’ resilience to climate and weather related hazards, and to enhance the multi-disciplinary climate change research in Zambia and Malawi.

The project has the aim to facilitate trainings for UNICEF field personnel in the area of warehouse and inventory management.

PW totalförsvarsresiliens i NATO project aims to explore the societal implications of NATO membership on critical infrastructure and crisis preparedness in Finland and Sweden. With the recent geopolitical shifts, including the war in Ukraine and both countries joining NATO, the project seeks to understand how these changes impact societal resilience. The study will compare the different approaches and journeys of Finland and Sweden in the sphere of total defence and comprehensive security. It will also explore how critical infrastructure and supply chains need to be reoriented to support Nordic integration across defence and crisis preparedness. The research is a collaboration between the Swedish Defence University and the Hanken School of Economics, leveraging their expertise in total defence and crisis preparedness.

CORE (sCience & human factOr for Resilient sociEty) responds to the call SU-DRS01-2018-2019-2020 - Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. CORE contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. It is built on the activities and results of previous and on-going projects and is driven by end-users within the consortium and their wider stakeholder networks. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge / learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high.

Blending this European specific and global best practice we will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster that is essential for the European society. A key characteristic of disaster response is the uncertainty and dynamics of the situation and, as consequence, the need for an integrated systemic approach able to (i) deliver appropriate and bespoke interventions also according to the human and social specificities in affected areas and populations (ii) empower adequate and collaborative co-management (governance based on socio-ecological systems) of crisis from citizens’ side.

The province of Ostrobothnia holds untapped tourism development that remains unexploited. The Ostrobothnia Tourism Roadmap 2030 project's vision is to transform Ostrobothnia into a vibrant tourist destination, leveraging its captivating archipelago and countryside to attract both domestic and foreign tourists. For this to be successful, there is a need to cooperate even more. Through the project, the aim is to foster cooperation, build networks, and establish a shared vision among the stakeholders within the province of Ostrobothnia.

Hanken shows support for Ukraine by offering students who have fled the war an opportunity to continue studying. Totally 30 independent study rights in Vaasa and Helsinki will be granted. If the demand for these study rights exceeds 30, Rector may later decide separately that Hanken grants more. Studies conducted via an independent study right are free of charge. The Consumer Newsscape Project researches how consumers use news in their everyday lives. What different types of experiences can news consumption lead to?

This is an industry collaboration project where the researcher works closely with the partner company, a logistics service provider offering circular economy (CE) services. The research focuses on extending the lifespan and circularity of consumer electronics. The academic focus of the project is to deepen the understanding of supply chains and logistics in this context and to theorize circular business models and ecosystems, utilizing rich data insights gained from industry collaboration. The industry impact and practical learnings are an important part of the project. It aims to provide knowledge that can help Finnish industry drive sustainable growth through the extension of product lifespans, thereby strengthening societal resilience. The results should support Finnish industry in developing the capabilities needed to take advantage of EU regulation and CE business opportunities.

At Hanken, we conduct both basic, applied and contract research. We increasingly work in cross-disciplinary project groups with both national and international academic colleagues, and collaborate closely with business life.

The VOL-PREP project aims to strengthen emergency preparedness in response to crises such as climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and pandemics. The project focuses on improving the logistics capabilities of volunteer groups, which play a critical role in disaster relief efforts, particularly within national frameworks in the Nordic region.

The DigCBA project contributes to the responsible use of digital cash-based assistance (CBA) in refugee crisis to support policy makers with the selection and use of the most suitable digital technologies (e.g., mobile money, blockchain) for delivering CBA to refugees. The project consists of an interdisciplinary team of humanitarian operations researchers with the focus on ICT, supply chain management, information systems and organizations studies.

The Future of Critical Functions (FUFU) project addresses the need to redefine and secure Finland’s critical societal functions in the face of digitalisation, geopolitical tensions, and global uncertainties. The project supports national strategies in comprehensive security, societal resilience, and security of supply.

The Kvarken – be my guest project, focuses on investigating local residents' interest in and engagement with local tourism development, and their views on how destinations can be more accessible without exceeding the area's ecological carrying capacity.

The project Food Security and Development in Nepal has the aim to create an understanding for how food security can be improved in regions affected by extreme weather conditions such as floods as a result of climate change.

The project aim is to develop a long-lasting innovation center that will develop the necessary foundation to support “new space” business activities in the Kvarken region. Hanken’s part of the project is business development around the space and satellite work.

A research project on multilingualism among Swedish-speakers' digital communication in Finland.

Critical materials refer to either materials that are not sufficiently available or materials that are dangerous. It is important to secure the reliable and undisturbed availability of metals and other materials necessary for ICT applications, communications and new environmental and energy technologies. In the circular economy of cities, critical materials are needed for instance, in households, buildings, infrastructures, and high technology products. These critical materials must be reclaimed for recycling and reuse towards the end of the product lifecycle.

In the fall of 2023 Hanken’s research area of strength Responsible Organising (RO) is organising a series of workshops under the heading “Envisioning the School of Organising”, posing a simple question: “How could we reimagine teaching, research and administration in a way that embody our deepest aspirations for human organising?”

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, most of our daily interactions have completely shifted to the digital world. In light of this shift caused by the outbreak, Virtual Business Lab - Meetup was created. It is a concept that aims to provide the community spirit of the Hanken Business Lab in a digital setting.

Hanken shows support for Ukraine by offering students who have fled the war an opportunity to continue studying. Totally 30 independent study rights in Vaasa and Helsinki will be granted. If the demand for these study rights exceeds 30, Rector may later decide separately that Hanken grants more. Studies conducted via an independent study right are free of charge. An independent study right cannot not entitle the student to a degree at Hanken.

The Department focuses on the two major subjects of Accounting and Commercial law. These subjects are integrated and linked together in order to offer the student a more holistic view of business, law and commercial practice. The Department's courses afford students the opportunity to study an exciting range of related topics. Research and teaching at the Department are  aimed towards giving students a good theoretical foundation, in addition to the acquisition of practical and relevant skills required in the marketplace.

The Summer Schools in Humanitarian Operations Management (SOMA) was hosted from December 9th to December 13th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a second part hosted from June 16th to June 20th of 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. This PhD and Masters level intensive course will dive into the operations surrounding humanitarian operations and disaster assistance with instruction from globally recognized leaders in the humanitarian operations research field. The summer school also serves as a forum for operations management students from all over the world to exchange research, concepts, and develop internetional networks.

The Corona-virus outbreak is continuing to spread. By beginning of February, the number of infected people surpasses 42,000 infections, and the death toll continues to rise. As authorities and responders are struggling to contain the spread, news about mass quarantine camps or shortages of personal protective equipment threaten the health systems globally, fuelled by rumours and mis-information.
The disruptions of (medical) supply chains, the lack of capacity to treat patients and the spread of rumours fuel an atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust, hampering an effective response. While traditional models of disease outbreaks largely focus on infection rates, new methods are needed to integrate behaviour from the bottom up, and integrated in macro-level models to coordinate the response world-wide.

Although Finland ranks highly in global innovation statistics, the country continues to struggle with turning innovations into international commercial success.

Instructions for Sisu for doctoral researchers

All Hanken graduates represent the school and are thus ambassadors. Hanken is very proud and grateful for all the role models that exist around the school and welcomes collaboration with alumni. Within Hanken there is also a group of alumni who are involved in the development of Hanken’s core operation and are thereby appointed Hanken Ambassadors. The Hanken Ambassadors contribute greatly to the development of Hanken as an international business school with close ties to the business community.
