Hanken School of Economics has launched a new MOOC in English, a free online course about modern supply chains.

Hanken School of Economics has received 2.5 million euros in funding from the Research Council of Finland to support the recruitment of a full professor and the professor’s research team in disaster management and resilience.

The Centre for Languages and Business Communication at Hanken is known for its diverse and high-quality language teaching. One example is the course Creative Community Engagement, where students volunteer in the local community while practising their communication skills in situations that cannot be recreated in a classroom..

In 2008 the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) published a mandatory sustainability reporting requirement which obligates selected types of listed companies to disclose sustainability information. However, according to new research this regulation fails to promote sustainable practices and may lead to unintended economic consequences.

Finland has implemented a subsidy scheme to compensate industrial producers for the indirect costs of the emissions trading system. Maria Wang shows in her dissertation that the subsidy has not been optimally designed. Its recipients are mostly large companies that do not suffer from the increase in electricity costs caused by emissions trading.

The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland has awarded a grant of 200,000 EUR for a project to research the matriculation examination in the Swedish language and literature, the test results, and the language of the examinees. This is a joint project between Hanken School of Economics and the University of Helsinki.

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. This will make it possible to adjust the schedule of admissions so that those selected through certificate-based admission do not need to prepare for the entrance exams.

Biodiversity loss is among the biggest challenges facing us. In order to address this challenge, businesses need to implement governance principles that promote the protection of our nature. Theresa Harrer, a postdoctoral researcher at Hanken School of Economics, is on a mission to find out how these governance principles for biodiversity should look like.

On a global scale, women are more alerted to social problems and sustainable activities than men. Hanken researchers Man Yang and Eva-Lena Lundgren-Henriksson have interviewed 20 female entrepreneurs in the Ostrobothnia region and the Åland islands to find out how and why they chose to be sustainable entrepreneurs.

A new study conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers. The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national measure of perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish customers who have during the last six months purchased or used the products of the included companies.

The Climate University network, which Hanken is a member of and is coordinated by the University of Helsinki, has formed a teaching cooperation contract between 18 universities. With these new contracts, a majority of Finnish university students can take the network’s climate and sustainability -themed courses.

KvarkenSat is a joint small satellite between the Ostrobothnian provinces and Västerbotten. It is due to be launched into space in just over a year, with drawings by children and young people on board on the satellite. The small satellite is the result of cooperation across the Kvarken. It also demonstrates that the conquest of space is not just for space superpowers.

The nationwide recommendation for remote work has ended and many workplaces have switched to combining remote work and office work in new ways. Different hybrid models will require more planning by both managers and employees and in some cases also redesigning of the office spaces.

The Nordic countries have made it easier for women to combine work and family by creating a parental leave system that has contributed to high labour force participation for women and lower costs in the form of lost income. Parental leave can, however, also have negative consequences for women's careers in professions where knowledge progresses fast.

Hanken School of Economics annually appoints the Alumni of the Year, a Hanken Alumnus/Alumna who has been topical in the past year and has received acknowledgement for their engagement in society. The Alumnus/Alumna has also kept contact with Hanken and shown an interest in the development of Hanken after their graduation. This year, Hanken appointed Heidi Schauman as the Alumna of the Year.

On 19–20 November, researchers in different disciplines will be discussing some of the latest scientific findings and fascinating research projects in the centre of Vaasa. All the universities and universities of applied sciences in Vaasa will contribute to this science celebration of rare proportions, organised jointly with the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland.

The EU waste directive mandates the member states to establish a separate collection of used textiles by the year 2025. Finland is aiming to start textile collection earlier, by the year 2023, which is 1,5 years from now. In this blog post, Emppu Nurminen from Nextiili, the organisation from Tampere which is part of the textile collection pilot taking place now, tells about their pioneering work.

New research shows that a service-providing organisation facilitates the well-being of individuals by supporting, socialising, and empowering them. Technology, service environment and design, and internal practices and arrangements also contribute to the individuals’ well-being.

During the spring, a course in cultural sustainability and communications was organized for the first time at Hanken. The course was a response to the students' interest in courses in the humanities.

Hanken School of Economics launches a new Career Podcast where Hanken’s alumni share their career stories and discuss what choices they have made, but also look back at their studies at Hanken. The first three episodes will be out 12 April 2021.

Within the agreement between Hanken School of Economics and the Fulbright Center, three US scholars will visit Hanken during spring 2021. Professors Nezih Altay, Brian Gibson and Leigh Anne Liu will conduct research at Hanken and hold a public seminar on their findings. More information about the seminars will be published on Hanken's website during the spring.

Gamification is one of the buzzwords in today’s societies, and it seems there are no limits in what all benefits and new areas of life one can conquer with it. The new book edited by Mikko Vesa from Hanken lightens up the connections between gamification and the field of management and organization.

The United Nations Guiding principles on Business and Human rights were launched in 2011. However, there is little consistency as to the level and means through which companies implement human rights and these guidelines.

Quantum is a versatile meeting place that offers access to company and financial databases and allows for the handling of big data. Modern technology makes it possible to stream all classes and other events, as well as allowing for keeping up with real-time financial news. Quantum, made possible by donations, opened in February 2020.

Political discussions about whether to merge Hanken in Vaasa with Åbo Akademi University or with the University of Vaasa have been ongoing ever since Hanken in Vaasa was established in 1980. Today Sören Kock, dean and rector’s representative in Vaasa, sees the possibility of Hanken in Vaasa remaining as Hanken in a positive light. “I find it fascinating that a Triple-Crown accredited university manages to operate in two locations,” Kock remarks.

After Class with Jesper & Dennis is a brand new podcast by Jesper Haga and Dennis Sundvik who teaches finance and accounting. The remote teaching and the corona situation made both Jesper and Dennis think that there was room for a podcast.
