Digitalising Teaching and Learning

Online courses, digital exams, interactive moments online, video lectures, video assignments

Digitalising teaching and learning is supported by Hanken Digital Learning Policy (approved 18.5.2022):

E-learning consists of many different options and on different levels. A small part of the course can be digitalised, or the whole course can be online, without physical meetings. A special case is MOOCs, cooperation online with other universities and open online courses.

  • The course material should, as much as possible, be accessible on-line - powerpoints, videos, links to online articles, e-books etc. The library has good instructions, and is more than willing to help!
  • Lectures can be recorded live (Panopto, Teams) or shorter videos can be prepared in beforehand (Panopto, Camtasia, Teams). Flipped classroom means students can check out the material and videos before the class, and more interaction using the knowledge can take place in the class. For example, short lectures in statistics to be checked out before practicing in class. The classroom can, of course, be on site or on line.
  • Workshops, Webinars, seminars and online office hours via Teams
  • Asyncronous discussions, like a discussion among students groups on an article or assighment, can be done via Moodle discussion groups (or, for example, Teams)
  • Group work, and working on joint documents can be done in Microsoft groups, Microsoft Teams
  • Digital exams:
    • Digital exam in an Examinarium - The exam time is chosen by the student (within dates decided by the teacher) in a video surveilled room (Examinarium).
This kind of exam is very suitable for litterature exams, pre course quizzes, maturity exams, personal exams, but also nearly any other exam. The teacher also add task to the exam, that needs to be performed with a computer program like Excel, Mathlab, SPSS if available on the computer. The computers are set up so the students cannot go out on internet etc.
The teacher creates the exam on exam.shh.fi and informs the students, who goes to the site and books a convenient time.
    • Digital exam in surveilled class - with the quiz tool in Moodle a digital exam can be set up in a computer room, or in any room with the students own computer. Of course, network and electricity needs to be available. (Hanken does not have a separate controlled system that locks the student´s computer from the outside world during an exam - like Digabi used in the Matriculation Exam).
    • Home exam as a digital exam - several courses uses home exams with Moodle - during a certain time the students can do their exam at home, off from Hanken, often via Moodle.

MOOCs, cooperation and open courses

Having a course online, means better possibilities to share and cooperate around a course. A special case is, of course, Massive Open Online Courses like Moocs. Building the course in cooperation, is as such not much different from building a normal Hanken course. However, certain issues need special attention, some of them mentioned below:

Issues that needs to be considered when cooperating around a course with another institution and their students, or when the course is on-line and used in, for example, the Open university:

  • Who gets the credits?
  • How do the students access the course (access to hanken Moodle only for Hanken students), and register for exams?
  • How are they registered at Hanken, how do they get their user ids?
  • Have you checked the copyright for all the materials you use? - under what licens is the material published - do you have the right to use it in an open course? - ONLY students registered at Hanken, that is, they have a study right at Hanken, have access to the electronic databases offered via Hanken. And no, you are not allowed to upload a pdf of an article ... - check with the library, they know!
  • Why is it an issue with the user-ids? As part of the Haka federation, offering Single Sign On (SSO) features, in and organisation, and between different services, we have promised to authenticate our users via strong identification. This means the users, before getting their user-ids and passwords, have to show passport, official id (on-line bank sing-in identification), and promise to follow our rules.

If you cooperate with another institution - remember, the same rules apply to them- registration, access, copy right issues has to be considered!

If you plan a cooperation course, please contact the study office, the library and computer center early in the process!
