When Patrick Lapveteläinen began his studies in finance and investments at Hanken School of Economics in 1986, Finland was undergoing a period of major transformation. Capital markets were opening up, interest rates were deregulated and the financial sector was being entirely reshaped.

The global management consultancy Inverto has joined Hanken’s Partner Programme. “We want to build long-term relationships with Hanken students. In addition to its strong reputation, Hanken has an international outlook and a clear focus on business, which aligns well with Inverto,” says Ella Möller, the company’s talent acquisition coordinator.

Hanken is now looking for students to serve as official student ambassadors on behalf of the university. The role is based on a zero-hour contract with Hanken as the employer and offers an hourly wage of 15 euros. The employment contract is fixed-term and valid until 30 June 2026.

The COVID-19 pandemic, the blockage of the Suez Canal in 2021, and the Russia-Ukraine war are examples of events that have disrupted supply chains. Media is increasingly mentioning how such events fragment the global supply chains, and now new research proves them right.

A new book in Finnish, Vastuullinen vuokranantaja (Eng. The responsible landlord), delves into landlord responsibility from all ESG perspectives: environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and good governance. The book is written by Hanna Silvola, associate professor of accounting at Hanken School of Economics and journalist Kati Valjus.

Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

Hanken offers five BSc students the opportunity to participate in the ENGAGE.EU Summer School, which will this year be hosted at Toulouse Capitole University 10.6.2024 online and 17-28.6.2024 on campus in Toulouse. Application deadline is 17.3.2024.

Students at Hanken have participated in a survey on how students in the Helsinki metropolitan area view housing, well-being and the future in the metropolitan area. Almost 70 per cent of the students are worried about their livelihood when the cost of living rises, and two thirds think that social crises have a negative impact on their confidence in the future.

Although entrepreneurs have been celebrated as heroes who can create their private kingdom and make the world a better place, new research broadens this image by exploring the downsides of entrepreneurship. Many entrepreneurs need to face significant challenges and make sacrifices, or navigate failure and negative identity for a prolonged period of time.

A new EU-directive requires that all end-of-life textiles, meaning clothes that can’t be used any more, are being collected separately, sorted and then reused or recycled. According to Associate Professor Anna Aminoff textile recycling processes, including separate collection and sorting, are expensive and complicated, and puts a lot of responsibility on the consumers – but things are hopefully slowly getting better.

Top Finnish design from the 1950s, carefully thought-out lighting, colours and soft flooring for a friendly and cozy atmosphere, and beautiful windows bringing natural light and the city outside into the rooms. The Hanken building in Helsinki was created by a dream team, says Päivi Helander, an Olof Ottelin researcher and one of the guides when Hanken participated in Helsinki Design Week.

Helsinki Design Week is the largest design and architecture festival in the Nordic countries and takes place 8-17.9.2023. The programme offers over 100 events and for the first time Hanken's main building is also part of the festival.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national indicator of the perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish consumers. The annual ranking conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. Every year, the Student Union chooses the Lecturer of the Year at SHS's annual party and SSHV's annual party. Associate professor Pia Polsa has been voted as Lecturer of the Year in Helsinki and received the award at the SHS annual party on 24 February 2023.

Sustainable digitalization and technological development was the theme of the think tank organized by the university alliance ENGAGE.EU in Mannheim at the end of September. Hanken, a member of the alliance since May, was represented by Associate Professor Mikael Laakso.

New research shows that a service-providing organisation facilitates the well-being of individuals by supporting, socialising, and empowering them. Technology, service environment and design, and internal practices and arrangements also contribute to the individuals’ well-being.

In Hanken’s third year of participation in the Aim2Flourish initiative, and after three nominations in previous years and four nominations this year, one of our student teams has received the Flourish prize for 2021.

The topic “Sustainability In The Banking Industry” was of great interest to researchers, alumni and students on Hanken’s Finance Day this year. The annual event was held online for the second consecutive year on 17th March 2021 and fully booked.

Quantum is a versatile meeting place that offers access to company and financial databases and allows for the handling of big data. Modern technology makes it possible to stream all classes and other events, as well as allowing for keeping up with real-time financial news. Quantum, made possible by donations, opened in February 2020.

Political discussions about whether to merge Hanken in Vaasa with Åbo Akademi University or with the University of Vaasa have been ongoing ever since Hanken in Vaasa was established in 1980. Today Sören Kock, dean and rector’s representative in Vaasa, sees the possibility of Hanken in Vaasa remaining as Hanken in a positive light. “I find it fascinating that a Triple-Crown accredited university manages to operate in two locations,” Kock remarks.

Although a state of emergency is not the optimal situation for developing novel innovations, a newly published Hanken study shows how the Covid crisis presented certain businesses with the opportunity to take their operations in an entirely new strategic direction.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan for advancing sustainable development globally. Hanken has developed a MOOC, an online course open for anyone, about the SDGs and how we can work to achieve them. The course starts on the social learning platform FutureLearn on 31 August. The latest report by the Helsinki GSE Situation Room states that the growth in the number of applications for unemployment benefit paid by Kela has been greatest in the Uusimaa region. The report is presented at an open access webinar in Zoom on Thursday, 7 May at 8 am.

Students at Hanken have participated in a study that examined how students in the metropolitan area view, among other things, housing, urban planning, and studies in the metropolitan area. The goal is to gather ideas and wishes on how to develop the metropolitan area and services for students.

Trainers’ House help companies through changes. Within the collaboration with Hanken, Trainers’ House can offer students part time jobs, among other things.

Jiekai Zhang has been appointed assistant professor in competition economics and empirical industrial organization at the Helsinki GSE.

The Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE) works to increase the quantity and quality of economic education and training in Finland, as well as promote cooperation between economics and other academic fields.

The new eight storey building in Arabianranta, Helsinki, combines student housing and state of the art sports facilities.The building accomodates apartments on the lower levels and a sports center including a fitness gym and a test laboratory on top.

This year’s Anders Wall scholarship is awarded to Hanken student Frans Westerlund. The scholarship of 125 000 SEK is the biggest one awarded to a student at Hanken. The award ceremony takes place 11.3.2019 at the concert house in Stockholm.

Vesa Vihriälä, DSocSci, has been appointed Professor of Practice at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics. Vihriälä will assume the position on 1 July 2019. The position is housed at University of Helsinki.

Hanken is involved in two building projects and now the first house is ready and accepted new tenants from 1 February 2019. There are still apartments available and open for applications.

Hanken scores very well in the latest exchange student survey among students that visited Hanken during spring 2018. All of the 54 respondents would recommend Hanken as host university for exchange studies, which is an exceptional score.

The Best Doctoral Dissertation of the Year Award has been granted to D. Sc. (Econ.) Lotta Vuoristo, by the Finnish Service Alliance, in May 2018. CERS warmly congratulates Lotta and interviews her about her work.

Exchange students at Hanken are extremely pleased with their experience and their studies. The results from the latest exchange student survey show that 96% would recommend Hanken as a destination for an exchange student semester.

The foundation stone of the new eight storey building on the Arcada Campus in Arabianranta, Helsinki, was put up on 17 January 2018. The new building will have have 103 student apartments and state of the art sports facilities.
