Instructions for how to register as present and information about the yearly sticker for the student card

The deadline for registration for the next academic year for Master's students is 31 August at 16.15. If 31 August falls on a weekend or on a holiday, the deadline for registration is the first weekday thereafter. The deadline for registration for the Spring Term is 15 January.

Master's students

According to the university law every university should have a student union in which all bachelor and master students are apart. Due to this all students pay a student union fee which consist of a fee to the student union and a fee for healthcare.

The total cost is 68 euros. This money is spent to assure your interests are taken into consideration in society and in school. Through the fee you also gain access to a student card that enables you to get cheaper prices in public transport, in many stores, in the school cafeteria, at the student gym Unisport and much more. Additionally, you can apply for housing through HOAS as well as participate in the many activities and use the facilities of the student union.

You can register as present through WebOodi if you have an Internet account with Danske Bank (Sampo), Aktia or Nordea.

If you do not pay the student union membership fee through WebOodi, the fee is to be paid to the Student Union's account. Please note: we can only accept payments done through Finnsh banks, since we cannot automatically verify foreign receipts:

The recipient is The Student Union of Hanken School of Economics. You must write your name (or the name of the person on whose behalf the fee has been paid) and which term the payment is for in the message field. The receipt must have an archive ID number. Please present the receipt to Student Services/Study affairs in Helsinki or Vaasa or send it to studyinfo@hanken.fi before the registration deadline in order to obtain the yearly sticker for the student ID card. Please note that you are not registered as present before you have shown the receipt and we have registered you! When you have been registered as present you cannot change your status to being registered as absent.

Student healthcare fee 

University students who are entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) have been required since January 2021 to pay a student healthcare fee to Kela for each academic term. All students who are registered as attending for the current term and are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree are entitled to FSHS services.

If you are entitled to FSHS services, you must pay the student healthcare fee. You cannot get an exemption for example for using occupational health services instead of FSHS, or for not receiving any financial aid for students.

You are not billed for the student healthcare fee but must make sure to pay it in OmaKela for each academic term. How to pay the student healthcare fee.
The due date for paying the student healthcare fee is determined based on the date on which you register as attending.

• For the autumn term, the due date is 30 September provided you have registered as attending by then. If you register as attending for the autumn term on or after 1 October, the due date is 31 December.

• For the spring term, the due date is 31 January provided you have registered as attending by then. If you register as attending for the spring term on or after 1 February, the due date is 31 July.

Membership in two Student unions

If you study for a Master's degree at two different universities in Finland, you should pay the student union fee of both of the student unions. The health care fee is only paid once. 

Doctoral students

Every doctoral student who wishes to register as present should have a yearly development discussion with their supervisor. You are responsible for making an appointment with the supervisor/s well in advance.

We recommend that you make a study plan or sign a supervision agreement with your degree supervisor.

The development discussion is carried out with the degree supervisor and when possible also with the thesis supervisor/s. The participation by the thesis supervisor/s is especially relevant when the main emphasis is on the thesis project. It is therefore desirable that both the degree and thesis supervisor/s take part in the discussion when possible.

During the meeting the following is to be discussed: how the goals set for the previous academic year have been achieved and the goals set for the next academic year. This includes information on courses, the thesis project, conference presentations, progress of other papers and publications. Furthermore, the supervisor/s and you are to agree on rules on how to work together for the next 12 months. The discussion is based on the study plan (the old annual registration form can be used for this purpose).

Membership in the student union of Hanken is not mandatory for doctoral students. Doctoral students may, however, join the student union of Hanken by paying the fee. Doctoral students are not entitled to the same benefits as are master students. For example, doctoral students are not entitled to the health services provided by The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS).

The student union membership fee for the whole academic year 2020-2021 for a doctoral student is 68 €, for one semester 34 € (you do not pay for the student health care services). If you wish pay the student union membership fee use one of the following accounts:

Sticker

When you have paid the student union membership fee, you can get the yearly sticker in August for your student ID card in Skogen, located in the basement of the main building in Helsinki. Contact details: gensek(a)shs.fi.

In Vaasa the stickers are available from the Studies and admissions.

You must always show your student card with the sticker when you

  • take part in exams
  • need a certificate of any kind
  • eat at the student restaurant for a student price

The sticker is only attached to your student union card and therefore will not be given to you without your student union card. If it is not possible for you to obtain your sticker in Vaasa personally you can send your student union card by mail to the Office of Study Affairs (P.O. Box 287, 65101 Vaasa) and we will send you your card with the sticker to your adress in WebOodi.
