New Chair of the Board of Hanken criticizes new state financing model

Hanken has expressed an opinion on the draft for a new financing model for higher education institutions, which would apply from 2021. Hanken delivered the opinion to the Ministry of Education and Culture.

In the statement, Hanken expresses concern about the financing model being more complicated and less predictable than the present model. Hanken is also of the opinion that internationalization needs to remain as a part of the basic financing, and the financing should notice people who get employment outside Finland. This is especially important for Hanken, as the graduates from Hanken are more inclined to be employed abroad to get valuable international work experience.

The new Board for Hanken took office 1 January 2019. Chair is Jannica Fagerholm, and Janne Larma is vice-chairman. Fagerholm is very concerned about the new proposition for financing model.

– The model lowers the value of a degree in economic sciences, and completely disregards the significance of international activity. This is counterproductive, as Finland’s future is dependent on a strong and international business life. The model reduces the financing of Hanken with slightly more than 15 per cent, which is completely unreasonable, says Fagerholm.
