The Board of Hanken School of Economics appoints the rector for a maximum of five years at a time. At its meeting on 2 February 2026, the Board decided that the current Rector, Ingmar Björkman, whose five-year term ends on 31 July 2027, will have his mandate extended by one year until 31 July 2028. According to current retirement regulations, Björkman retires in the autumn of 2028.

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. Finnish universities’ vice presidents for education agreed on launching a joint development project to develop student admissions. Entrance examinations will be digitalised, their content developed, and their number significantly reduced. The needs for development were identified jointly by the universities particularly as a result of admissions carried out over the course of the national state of emergency. The development work will be discussed at universities during the autumn.

Many high-tech products contain high-demand metals. These metals are of strategic importance to the world economy but will likely be difficult to access in the future. As critical materials, they are part of society’s critical infrastructure and should therefore be recycled and reused to a greater degree.

Unequal access to drinking water in different geographical contexts is embedded in political, racialized, classed, and gendered hierarchies. Technologies and innovations aimed at solving drinking water problems only tend to gloss over the bigger issues.

Professor Kaj Storbacka is appointed Dean of Executive Education and Corporate Relations at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki. In his task Storbacka will be responsible for corporate relations and fundraising.

Due to the pandemic, Hanken has transferred almost all teaching to online teaching since March 2020. According to a recent study, the students at Hanken are satisfied with their online learning environment and progress in their studies, but some clearly feel lonely.

The corona crisis has affected the Finnish economy, but to a lesser extent than originally feared. During the crisis, business activities have been supported both directly and indirectly, including measures such as the easement of lay-off rules. The Government is currently preparing a third cost support packages for companies. However, the Government should consider shifting the focus from direct support such as cost support to indirect support, such as guarantees by Finnvera.

AACSB International has on 29 January 2021 announced that Hanken School of Economics has earned an extended accreditation. The AACSB accreditation is regarded as a hallmark of excellence in business education and has been earned by only five percent of the world’s business schools offering degree studies in business and economics.

Mikko Vesa, Associate Professor in Management and Organisation, has been elected Lecturer of the Year by the Student Union of Hanken. The award was announced during the Student Union’s annual ball in February.
