As part of the Hanken JobShadow initiative, companies open their doors to international students for a day, offering a unique glimpse into everyday working life in Finland. For students Ayesha Ahmed and Luozhi Chen, this meant spending a day inside Wärtsilä and Rights & Brands.

Hanken has signed new student exchange agreements with Catholic University of Portugal – Porto, Portugal, and The Queen’s University of Belfast in North Ireland, United Kingdom. You can apply for an exchange at the new partner universities for the spring semester 2027 in the application round that opened today. The deadline for the applications is 15 June 2026.

In autumn 2025, a new master’s programme in sustainability reporting and financial analysis was launched as a collaboration between Hanken in Vaasa and Umeå University. It is Finland’s first one-year master’s level programme at university level.

The interest in business studies continues to be strong in Finland. In this spring’s second joint application round, Hanken School of Economics received a total of 3,179 applications (2025: 3,279, 2024: 2,889). The Board of Hanken School of Economics appoints the rector for a maximum of five years at a time. At its meeting on 2 February 2026, the Board decided that the current Rector, Ingmar Björkman, whose five-year term ends on 31 July 2027, will have his mandate extended by one year until 31 July 2028. According to current retirement regulations, Björkman retires in the autumn of 2028.

Hanken School of Economics has seen a significant rise in applications to its English-taught Bachelor in Business programme, clearly surpassing last year’s figures. This year, the programme attracted 1,237 applicants (2025: 1,020).

The Language café at Hanken School of Economics is a new initiative open to both students and staff offering a relaxed and inclusive setting for language learning, cultural exchange and community building. It’s also part of Hanken’s broader efforts to support language learning and integration.

From 2025, universities will have nine national entrance exams, which will allow applicants to apply for a wide range of different subjects and universities. At the same time, the timetable for the entrance exams will be relaxed so that those selected by certificate-based admissions will no longer have to prepare for and take the entrance exams.

Hanken has signed a new student exchange agreement with The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. You can apply for an exchange at this new partner university for Spring semester 2025 when the application is open.

The studies at Hanken are international in many ways, not least thanks to the unique mandatory exchange semester for all bachelor-level students. Meet four students who are on exchange in different parts of the world during the spring semester 2024.

Hanken School of Economics’ Bachelor's Programme in Swedish received 2488 applications (2023: 2148), 1680 to Helsinki (2023: 1410) and 808 to Vaasa (2023: 738) in the joint application that closed on 27.3.2024.

Students will soon be able to take one entrance exam and use it to apply to several universities and fields of study. The reform will significantly reduce the number of entrance exams. This will make it possible to adjust the schedule of admissions so that those selected through certificate-based admission do not need to prepare for the entrance exams.

Top Finnish design from the 1950s, carefully thought-out lighting, colours and soft flooring for a friendly and cozy atmosphere, and beautiful windows bringing natural light and the city outside into the rooms. The Hanken building in Helsinki was created by a dream team, says Päivi Helander, an Olof Ottelin researcher and one of the guides when Hanken participated in Helsinki Design Week.

Helsinki Design Week is the largest design and architecture festival in the Nordic countries and takes place 8-17.9.2023. The programme offers over 100 events and for the first time Hanken's main building is also part of the festival.

The University Collegium of Hanken approved the financial statements for 2022 at its meeting on 8 May 2023. Hanken's operating result in 2022 was -2.9 million compared to the budgeted –3,0 million.

The Finnish Innovation Index (FII) is a national indicator of the perceived innovativeness of companies among Finnish consumers. The annual ranking conducted at Hanken School of Economics lists the most innovative companies according to Finnish consumers.

“It's been about 15 years since I was at Hanken, and I needed a few more tools in my toolbox. Something tangible since questions around strategy and leadership are coming up in my work daily.” These comments stem from President and CEO of the Ahola Group, Ida Saavalainen, who currently attends the Hanken Executive MBA programme.

In order to honour the university's largest donors, Hanken has established awards for the best performing students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, and to the best performing students who go on exchange during their bachelor studies.

The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

Hanken’s Bachelor degree in Swedish in Vaasa has attracted a record number of applicants this year. In the joint application in spring 2023, a total of 739 applications was submitted to Hanken in Vaasa.

Finnish universities’ vice presidents for education agreed on launching a joint development project to develop student admissions. Entrance examinations will be digitalised, their content developed, and their number significantly reduced. The needs for development were identified jointly by the universities particularly as a result of admissions carried out over the course of the national state of emergency. The development work will be discussed at universities during the autumn.

To freelance alongside paid work is becoming more and more popular. When should one consider delegating the accounting to an agency or consider whether it would be more profitable to establish a company? And what does one have to think of when hiring staff?

Within the agreement between Hanken School of Economics and the Fulbright Center, three US scholars will visit Hanken during spring 2021. Professors Nezih Altay, Brian Gibson and Leigh Anne Liu will conduct research at Hanken and hold a public seminar on their findings. One third of all applicants for Hanken in the joint application in the spring of 2021 are Finnish speaking. Strong knowledge of both domestic languages ​​after graduation provides good job opportunities.

In 2017, The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre conducted an audit of Hanken’s quality system and awarded it a quality label that is valid for six years. In February, Hanken signed up for the next national evaluation taking place in 2023.

This spring Hanken has taken some concrete steps towards making the vision of a carbon neutral Hanken 2030 a reality. These include joining the Climate leadership coalition, adopting responsible investment principles for investments and appointing a sustainability group.

The topic “Sustainability In The Banking Industry” was of great interest to researchers, alumni and students on Hanken’s Finance Day this year. The annual event was held online for the second consecutive year on 17th March 2021 and fully booked.

On 12 March 2016, Helsinki GSE published a report which, with the help of Finnish register material, analyses the connection between the transition to distance education in the second stage and the prevalence of coronavirus infection in Finland at the end of 2020.

The majority of entrance examinations will be held in May–June. Changes to the manner of administering the examinations are made only if required by regulations issued by the authorities.

After carrying out careful assessment and risk analyses, Finnish universities have concluded that holding entrance examinations which require applicants’ physical presence and also involve careful safety arrangements is the best way to implement a fair student admission procedure that takes into account subject-specific special requirements and treats all applicants equally.

The HUMLOG Institute is coordinating a research project where the researchers are investigating how different countries have handled the Covid-19 pandemic, the economic impact and how to tackle social media disinformation.

During May Hanken has awarded students for excellent bachelor’s and master’s theses and good study performance. This is not entirely uncomplicated, as there are no common criteria or methods of gathering and comparing data describing the performance on sustainability, especially for smaller businesses.

The Finnish universities have concluded that, due to the coronavirus situation, organising traditional entrance examinations is not possible without compromising the safety of those involved. What makes guaranteeing safety impossible is the severity of the pandemic, the difficulty of identifying those at a higher risk for serious illness, as well as the risks associated with the examination situation itself.
